But at the heart of all this is the kakeibo- the budgeting journal used to set savings goals and track spending. The premise is simple- at the beginning of each month you sit down with your kakeibo and think mindfully about how much you would like to save and what you will need to do in order to reach your goal. The kakeibo then gives you space to jot down your weekly spending and reflect on the month just gone. Book excerpt: Control your spending, save money, regain peace of mind, and make your life happier and healthier with Kakebo—the traditional Japanese method of money management that is still widely used today. Having enough money to live is one of the most important factors affecting our health. Trying to balance expenses—utility bills, housing, healthcare, food, and for many, the costs of raising children (not to mention paying for college!)—leaves us worried and stressed. But there is a solution: Kakebo, a practical, proven method that helps you keep track of every penny, manage spending, and save up to thirty percent more! With this invaluable guide you’ll interact with your spending every day for two years, and learn how to manage your personal budget. Designed like a diary, it allows you to record all your daily expenses week by week so you can see exactly where your money goes. Each day is divided into four categories: 1. primary needs—food, personal hygiene, children; 2. optional needs—shopping, cosmetics, gifts; 3. culture and free time—restaurants, books, entertainment; and 4. extras/foreseeable expenses—such as travel, repairs, tuition, and taxes. Kakebo begins with setting a monthly budget. At the beginning of each month, enter your fixed incoming funds and outgoing expenses, and set a savings target. Then, each day, record your various expenses. By keeping close tabs on what you’re spending, you’ll be able to identify the waste and see the most significant areas where adjustments can be made. Kakebo also offers practical and motivating tips that teach you how to save more successfully. Kakebo isn’t just about money—it helps to develop self-awareness, self-discipline, and self-esteem, and promotes peace of mind. Best of all, you can begin any time of year—individually marking the months and days without wasting any pages. Plus, its simple yet inviting for-color graphics help you break down each expense and easily identify see where adjustments need to be made.

Book Japan Bashing

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-01-11
  • ISBN : 1136970932
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Japan Bashing written by Narrelle Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to examine and analyse the phenomenon of ‘Japan-bashing’, from its invention and popularisation in the United States in the late 1970s to the emergence of other national variants, including in Australia and Japan, to its gradual decline in the late 1990s. It is the first major book-length study of ‘Japan-bashing from a multinational perspective, one that attempts to place ‘Japan-bashing’ in its proper historical context and to examine its operation and legacy in the twenty-first century. Despite its importance in the study of discourses about Japan, as well as in understanding broader global changes in the late twentieth century and beyond, the phenomenon of ‘Japan-bashing’ remains largely neglected in published writings. Moreover, it is a far more complex phenomenon than has been assessed thus far. While, on first glance, ‘Japan-bashing’ merely seems to recall other periods in which Japan has been viewed as a dangerous ‘other’ to ‘the West’, such as the Western emphasis on the ‘yellow peril’ from the late nineteenth century as well as Allied anti-Japanese propaganda during World War II, ‘Japan-bashing’ also had its own distinctive characteristics. Moreover, while ‘Japan-bashing’ is often described as a quaint historical, rather than a pressing contemporary, phenomenon, it is actually by no means extinct. The ongoing influence of ‘Japan-bashing’ also has parallels in other ‘bashing’ phenomena, such as ‘China-bashing’. This book will be of interest to scholars and postgraduate students in Japanese studies and international relations.

Book Dirty Hearts

Download or read book Dirty Hearts written by Fernando Morais and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernando Morais’ Dirty Hearts is a tour de force of literary journalism that investigates the discriminatory treatment of the Japanese immigrant community in Brazil during World War II and in the aftermath of Japan’s defeat and unconditional surrender. In contrast to the internment camps and compulsory military service that characterized the Japanese American wartime experience, this book traces the rise to power of Shindō Renmei, an ultranationalist secret society that formed in response to the anti-Japanese measures enacted under Getulio Vargas’ Estado Novo. Based in São Paulo, the group used terrorism, propaganda campaigns, and conspiracy theories to violently enforce its narrative of Japan’s victory. These traumatic events nevertheless brought about a permanent transformation in the Japanese Brazilian community from a largely insular colony with close ties to its imperial homeland to its new identity as an ethnic minority in postwar Brazil’s fraught racial democracy.

Book excerpt: This is the first book in English to provide a fully illustrated guide to the use of polearms - ranging from the earliest halberds and spears reaching Japan from the Asian mainland to the sophisticated naginata, nagamaki and various forms of yari used by the Japanese samurai through the medieval period. While the sword remains the best known of Japanese weapons, it was the halberd (naginata) and then the yari that dominated the battlefields up to the early seventeenth century, and thereafter the yari became an important status symbol to many warrior families. Additionally, the authors focus on the actual method of use of these weapons, hitherto an almost unknown aspect in the West.

Book Superhuman Japan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marie Thorsten
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-12
  • ISBN : 9781138629011
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Superhuman Japan written by Marie Thorsten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the imaginative narratives that shaped the attitudes of Americans (and others) toward Japan. Focusing on cultural aspects of economic nationalism and US-Japan relations during the trade war Marie Thorsten uses examples from public discourse, film, documentaries, novels, acts of racism and comparison of international education assessments to examine the way in which Japan has been constituted in a global political gaze as an economic hegemon. In times of heightened rivalry, we often try to find superior "others" so that we can motivate ourselves against an imagined future of decline. During the Cold War, Americans and other nations in the West took advantage of being the underdog against the perceived superiority of the Soviet Union, especially by turning the Sputnik launch of 1957 into a lodestone for an educational renaissance. As postwar Japanese power became increasingly threatening, American policymakers again tried to fashion Japan into another "Sputnik" to motivate American people. This book explores 1980s "Bubble" Japan as a "Superhuman Other" in the consciousness of Americans, especially as reflected in popular culture and policy discourses. Making Japan into a Superhuman often resorted into the same stereotyping that invented Japan as a Subhuman. It was difficult for many to see that America, Japan and other nations were actually sharing the same global economic circumstances affecting attitudes toward knowledge and nation. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Japanese politics, International Relations and Japanese culture and society.
