Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you see when you look around? Where does it lead, and to what end? Is there some purpose to it all? And if so, where do you fit in? And how might we fit in together? Maybe you have a faith but desire greater understanding. Maybe you had a faith and are disillusioned. Or maybe you want a faith but are skeptical. This book invites another look. It begins a conversation. Who is God? What is faith? What does God want from us? Why suffering? Why worship? Why work? Through these and other everyday questions, this book suggests possible answers. Answers don't arrest thought. Answers provoke thought and action--life. This book invites readers to look around so that they might discover a faith for the twenty-first century, a faith in conversation with science, a faith fit for deep personal questions, a faith ready to engage complex public issues. Like Moses on Mount Pisgah wondering about a land he could see but never enter, when looking around we may be awakened to hope.

Download or read book Kairos Clock written by Arnie Exel and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two types of time; Chronos time and Kairos time. Chronos time, as in chronology, is that which we recognize; a man-made measurement of time divided into segments, like those on a clock's face; hours, minutes and seconds. Kairos time is measured in significant life events; they may manifest as being man-made but are not. Kairos time is not divided into segments and can be life-changing. For Petty and Cross, their future Kairos moments became particularly significant, the day they crossed paths with young Lucy Carlos. Sarge's methods of policing are of the old school. When he seeks retribution for victims of crime, many Kairos clocks start ticking. Is he the saviour of society or an instrument of Kairos? Or are there other unseen forces at work? What's really going on? Life is a journey through time and events, (Chronos and Kairos), that we all must travel in order to reach where we are destined. The past shapes the present, the future and ultimately our destiny. This journey begins decades ago when John is a young police officer. As time goes by he becomes known as Sarge, a man disillusioned by society and justice. Subtle clues and plot points are left along the way; remember them. Read between the lines and listen to what is not being said to see - what's really going on.........

Book Just Remembering

Download or read book Just Remembering written by Michael Warren Tumolo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just Remembering: Rhetorics of Genocide Remembranceand Sociopolitical Judgment analyzes a set of influential discourses of genocide remembrance to explain how public memory discourses inform sociopolitical judgment. Within this explanatory context, Just Remembering additionally asks how we might remember pasts marked by genocidal violence in ways that commit ourselves to a deeper understanding and more humane practice of justice. The chapters are thematically organized, focusing on specific sites of memory to highlight symbolic inducements of memorial discourses. Chapter 2 analyzes U.S. public discourse concerning an “Armenian Genocide” resolution to elucidate the role of politics in the production, dissemination, and maintenance of memory. Chapter 3 offers a historical account of the shift in public discourse concerning the capture of the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, demonstrating how and with what consequences the discourses shifted from a focus on law to a focus on morality. Chapter 4 expands this work by analyzing how competing narrative accounts of historical figures and events (Eichmann and the Holocaust) influence what we remember, how we remember, and the ends to which we apply such memories. Chapter 5 analyzes the Report of the President’s Commission on the Holocaust that produced the United States’ official remembrance of the Holocaust. This chapter argues that the Commission Report provides an exemplary explanation for why we should remember and provokes a complex understanding of what we are to remember. Chapter 6 concludes the book by focusing on the productive capacity of the humanitarian aims of U.S. Holocaust remembrance.

Book A Kairos Moment for Caribbean Theology

Download or read book A Kairos Moment for Caribbean Theology written by Garnett Roper and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project of developing a contextual theology for the Caribbean was first articulated in the early 1970s in Trinidad and Jamaica. In the years since, many evangelical churches and theologians in the Caribbean have been ambivalent about the validity of this project, assuming that an emphasis on context was somehow antithetical to the pure gospel. But the crisis of the times, along with a more mature hermeneutic, has led to a re-evaluation of this assumption. Here a group of evangelical Caribbean theologians enter the discussion, with substantive proposals for how the gospel addresses the Caribbean context. They are joined by other theologians from mainline Protestant and Catholic traditions in the Caribbean. The result is an ecumenical dialogue on the diverse ways in which orthodox Christian faith may provide both challenge and hope for the Caribbean context. Half the essays in this volume were originally presented at the Forum on Caribbean Theology held in 2010 at the Jamaica Theological Seminary; the rest were invited especially for this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 14, 1912, Hillsville, Virginia, native Floyd Allen (1856–1913) was convicted of three criminal charges: assault, maiming, and the rescue of prisoners in custody. What had begun as a scuffle between Allen's nephews over a young woman ended with him being charged as the guilty party after he allegedly hit a deputy in the head with a pistol. When the jury returned with the verdict, Allen stood up and announced, "Gentleman, I ain't a-goin." A gunfight ensued in the crowded courtroom that killed five people and wounded seven others. The state of Virginia put Floyd and Claude Allen to death by electrocution the following spring. More than a century later, the event continues to impact the citizens and communities of the area as local newspapers recirculate the sordid story and give credence to annual public reenactments that continue to negatively impact the national perception of the region. In this first book-length scholarly review of the Hillsville shoot-out, author Travis A. Rountree examines various media written about and inspired by the event and explains how the incident reinforced the nation's conception of Appalachia through depictions of this sensational moment in history. In all, this book provides an extensive analysis of this historic conflict and reveals a new understanding of the shaping of memories and stories from the event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be created in the image of God? This is the core question in Christian anthropology and it is surprisingly important in understanding everything else. Anthropology is the study of human beings, the who question of philosophy. As Christians, our identity is found in Jesus Christ, but exactly what does this imply? Because we are created in the image of God, he is familiar and we immediately recognize him (metaphysics). Because we worship the God who created the universe, we expect the universe to be orderly and worthy of scientific study (epistemology). Because God loves us, we can love those around us who make up God's family (ethics). Our anthropology is accordingly an interpretive key that colors how we see everything else. In exploring this question, Image and Illumination offers over forty devotions containing a reflection, prayer, and questions for discussion. These devotions are organized into these chapters: Introduction, Image, Fall from Grace, Illumination, and Restoration. Cover art is by James Tissot (1836-1902): Moses Adores God in the Burning Bush. French Jewish Museum, New York. Hear the words; walk the steps; experience the joy! What are people saying? Image and Illumination is a book you'll want to read and reread, a treasure trove of spiritual insight. Through thoughtful interpretation of Scripture, Stephen applies insight in a way to challenge the believer to a greater appreciation of their faith. Linda Wood Rondeau, Author Stephen as a way of writing that not only brings clarity to these complex theological topics but brings them home to the reader, so they connect with these truths on a personal level. Eric Teitelman, Pastor Stephen has written a series of brief textual expositions on a variety of interesting, important, and sometimes difficult theological issues. Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary Stephen tackles that most basic of human questions: What does it mean to be created in the image of God? Through modern-day examples and scripture, he draws the reader ever closer to the answer found in Christ. Sarah Hamaker, Author Many of us live with the sense that all is not as it should be in this world. That our world is both beautiful and somehow broken. In Image and Illumination Stephen Hiemstra peels back the layers of our modern world to reveal not just what things should be, but what they one day will be through God's work in our world. You will not regret your time immersed in this book. Aaron McMillan, Pastor

Book The God Instinct

  • Release : 2023-10-11
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book The God Instinct written by Tom Stella and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this simple, elegant, and literate book, Tom Stella shows what can happen when we move from certitude to doubt, from stability to searching, when cherished beliefs are cast adrift; when life experiences seem to tell us that the "right" answers no longer seem so "right." Such a time is an enriching time, he tells us, a time when life is no longer a matter of going from "question to answer, but from question to question." And like the many, many people he has encountered in his work, he concludes that "life in all its messiness is a sacred affair." This is the point, author Tom Stella believes, when we become seekers--seekers of truth and spiritual maturity. Although focused on the fundamental themes of the spiritual life, The God Instinct successfully bridges the spiritual and the practical. Stella is able to ground his insights in the realities of daily living with the wisdom gleaned from his own journey.

Real estate agent, Sienna Bachman, always ethical and historically judicious in her decisions, learns that karma can come in two flavors; but she fears that she may taste only one. The dark, handsome artist, Jerrin Boudreaux, Dominic Fontaine's estranged son, must deal with the specter of his father's death, loathing him more and more as Dominic's past betrayal is compounded by still more family secrets. Established agoraphobe, Cherise Fontaine, never understood her brother's hatred for their father, but she needs him more than ever, now that Dominic won't be around to coax her out of her shell. As Bay St. Louis sits in flooded, flattened ruin, sixteen year old Noah is stranded in Jackson during a gig with his band, waiting for his alcoholic mother to join him as Katrina bears down on the coast. She never appears. Desperate to find her, he has no resources left to him except the infamous Envelope. Finally, he must open it, per his mother's instruction, in order to find help from a stranger. A petty thief named Kitcher is unaware of the role he plays in linking these people together. In the aftermath of the worst hurricane in American history, the secrets held in a safe deposit box spur the Fontaine offspring into a journey of enlightenment and self-discovery as their lives converge with strangers, and the mysteries of karma, hope, and synchronicity take over.

Book This Deep Pierian Spring

Download or read book This Deep Pierian Spring written by M.F. Sia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental questions about life arise in various contexts, making us wonder about the real worth of living. However, it is certainly a sign of our times when one is alerted to the fundamental question about the meaning and significance of life by an ominous text message. The main character of this book, Professor Enrique de los Reyes, receives such a warning: the onset of super-typhoon Haiyan, the strongest ever to hit landfall, and the impending danger to his friend and his relatives in the Philippines. As he anxiously awaits more news, he recalls and reviews in the context of this tragedy his philosophical wanderings throughout a long academic career in pursuit of the meaning of life. He wonders how these could now be reconciled with the urgent need for him to attend to this particular situation. The response to his query comes from a most unexpected source as he assesses Alexander Pope’s advice to drink deeply from the Pierian spring and realises its import for one’s conduct in life. This reflective account of a human quest is the last volume in a trilogy which probes into philosophical themes in a narrative way. The first book, Those Distant Shores: A Narrative of Human Restlessness, looks at human restlessness and explores the fundamental theme of human transcendence by following the life-stories of three boyhood friends and of another young student as they embark on their respective journeys in life. The second book, That Elusive Fountain of Wisdom: A Tale of the Human Thirst for Knowledge, deals with the fundamental craving of human beings for fulfilment as depicted in the various characters from different countries who pursue their respective academic interests and ambitions.
