Book excerpt: The intensity and spectral characteristics of x-ray emitted from laser-produced plasmas have been investigated computatinoally and experimentally. a two-dimensional implosi code was used successfully to calculate laser-plasma radiation characteristics and to aid in the design of laser targets for high-yield x-ray production. Other computer codes, in use or under development predict lime strengths and energies for laser-plasma x-ray emission. An experimental effort is aimed at reliable measurements of x-ray yields and spectra. a wide variety of x-ray detection methods have been evaluated, and x-ray yields have been measured from plasmas produced with two dissimilar laser systems. The high energy x-ray spectrum, from about 10 to 140 keV, has been studied using high-gain scintillatino detectors and thick K-edge filters. Various supplementary measurements have provided information concerning characteristics of the target-reflected laser light, the ion energies, and the laser intensity patterns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two rate equation models are developed to describe the emission of K-line radiation from laser-produced aluminum plasmas. In the first model, the temperature of the electrons is a freely variable quantity; whereas, in the second model, it is computed from a kinetic energy equation in which phenomenological terms representing thermal conduction and laser energy absorption are introduced. The latter model predicts X-ray emission from a hot-spot of plasma in close agreement with observations from an experiment initiated by focusing 1.9 J of neodymium radiation in a 1/4 nanosecond pulse onto an aluminum target. Computer solutions to the rate equation model are obtained for a number of different prescribed time variations of the electron temperature. These solutions are compared to a similar set of solutions to a coronal model. It is found that these two sets of solutions differ significantly whenever the electron temperature varies rapidly over subnanosecond periods and the aluminum plasma has not been overheated and driven to the state of total ionization. Book excerpt: Between FY09 and FY11 we have conducted more than a dozen three-week experimental campaigns at high-power laser facilities around the world to investigate laser-channeling through x-ray and optical imaging and the conversion from laser-energy to xrays. We have performed simultaneous two-wavelength x-ray imaging (K-alpha and He-alpha) to distinguish the hot-plasma region (hot-spot) from the laser-produced electrons (K-alpha). In addition, we have initiated a new collaboration with SNL and have performed first shots on the 100 TW beamlet chamber to commission a fast x-ray streak camera to be used to investigate the temporal evolution of our K-alpha sources. We also collaborated on campaigns at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) and the LANL Trident laser to employ laser produced x-ray sources for Thomson scattering off dense matter.

Book excerpt: We describe recent laser-solid interaction experiments using the 500 fs Janus Nd:glass (1053 nm) laser presently at 1.5 TW power level. The laser beam path is enclosed in vacuum from the compressor to the target and is focused using an off-axis paraboloid. Optical diagnostics monitor the near field pattern, focal spot, spectrum, temporal shape and pre-pulse level. A 12 [mu]m diameter (FWHM) focal spot is achieved (2.5 × diffraction limit) corresponding to a peak irradiance of 8 × 1017 W cm−2 on target. A suite of x-ray diagnostics characterize the x-ray emission from the plasma. We present results for normal incidence irradiation of high-Z (Zn, Ge, Mo, Sn) solid targets. The supra-thermal electrons produced in the short scale length plasma have temperature T{sub H}> 100 keV and can efficiently fluoresce the cold K-[alpha] lines in the 8--30 keV energy range.

Book excerpt: Spectroscopic investigations of the x-ray emission of plasmas heated by 120 ps, frequency doubled pulses from the JANUS Nd: glass laser are presented. High Z K-shell spectra emitted from slab targets heated to near 10[sup 17] W cm[sup[minus]2] intensity are investigated. High resolution ([gamma]/[Delta][gamma]>5000) x-ray spectra of multicharged ions of H-like Ti, Co, Ni, Cu, and also H-like Sc in the spectral range 1.5--3.0[angstrom] are obtained in single laser shots using a spherically bent Mica crystal spectrograph with a 186 mm radius of curvature. The spectra- have one dimensional spatial resolution of about 25[mu]m and indicate that the size of the emission zone of the resonance, transitions is25[mu]m. Simultaneous x-ray images of the plasma from a charge-coupled device pinhole camera confirmed that the plasma x-ray emission is from a similar sized source. Survey spectra[gamma]/[Delta][gamma]=500--1000) taken with a flat LiF (200) crystal spectrometer with a charge-coupled device detector complement the high resolution data. Two dimensional LASNEX modeling of the laser target conditions indicate that the high K-shell charge states are produced in the hot dense region of the plasma with electron temperature2 keV and density[approximately]10[sup 22] cm[sup[minus]3]. These experiments demonstrate that with modest laser energy, plasmas heated by high-intensity 120 ps lasers provide a very bright source of hard[approximately]8 keV x-ray emission.
