Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental studies of resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) in ion-atom collisions are reviewed. In the RTE process correlated electron capture and projectile excitation occur together in a single encounter with a target atom. Measurements of Ca/sup q+/ + H2 (q = 10 to 19) from 100 to 370 MeV establish the projectile charge-state dependence of K-shell RTE and provide a detailed test of the theory. Structure due to RTE is observed in the energy dependence of the total electron-capture cross sections for this collision system. A comparison of the Ca/sup 17 +/ + H2 data with previous results for Ca/sup 17 +/ + He demonstrates the effect of the target-electron momentum distribution on the RTE process. Studies of 230 to 610 MeV Nb/sup 31 +/ + H2 provide information about RTE involving agreement with theoretical calculations. 15 refs., 4 figs.

If the excitation and capture are correlated, then the process is called resonant transfer and excitation (RTE); if they are uncorrelated, then the process is termed nonresonant transfer and excitation (NTE). Experimental work to date has shown the existence of RTE and provided strong evidence for NTE. Results presented here provide information on the relative magnitudes of RTE and NTE, the charge state dependence of RTE, the effect of the target momentum distribution on RTE, the magnitude of L-shell RTE compared to K-shell RTE, and the target Z dependences of RTE and NTE. 15 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: Coincidence measurements of charge transfer and simultaneous projectile electron excitation provide insight into correlated two-electron processes in energetic ion-atom collisions. Projectile excitation and electron capture can occur simultaneously in a collision of a highly charged ion with a target atom; this process is called resonant transfer and excitation (RTE). The intermediate excited state which is thus formed can subsequently decay by photon emission or by Auger-electron emission. Results are shown for RTE in both the K shell of Ca ions and the L shell of Nb ions, for simultaneous projectile electron loss and excitation, and for the effect of RTE on electron capture.

This process occurs when a target electron is captured simultaneously with the excitation of the projectile followed by deexcitation via photon emission. RTE, which is analogous to dielectronic recombination (DR), proceeds via the inverse of an Auger transition, and is expected to be resonant for projectile velocities corresponding to the energy of the ejected electron in the Auger process. RTE was investigated by measuring cross sections for projectile K x-ray emission coincident with single electron capture for 15 to 200 MeV 16S/sup 13 +/, 100 to 360 MeV 20Ca/sup 16 +/ /sup 17 +/ /sup 18 +/ and 180 to 460 MeV 23V/sup 19 +/ /sup 20 +/ /sup 21 +/ ions colliding with helium. Strong resonant behavior, in agreement with theoretical calculations of RTE, was observed in the coincidence cross sections.

For Ca and V ions two maxima are observed in the energy dependence of the measured coincidence cross sections. Theoretical calculations show that these maxima are correlated to two groups of intermediate resonant states in the RTE process for which the excited and captured electrons occupy levels with principal quantum numbers n = 2,2 and n = 2, greater than or equal to 3. 13 references, 6 figures.

Following the tradition established by earlier conferences in the series, it was attended by 280 participants from 24 countries. A total of 28 invited talks were delivered at the conference. These talks, which are presented in this volume, covered a wide range of topics in atomic physics in a broad sense. They extend from very basic problems (e.g., the interpretation of quantum mechanics in light of Bell's theorem and the feasibility of relativistic many-body calculations) to applied problems (e.g., laser detection of trace elements and spectroscopy of chemisorbed molecules). Professor M.Ya. Amusia was unable to attend the conference but his invited paper is included here. Professor V.S. Letokhov presented a talk entitled "Prospects of Laser Detection of Very Rare Isotopes, but was unable to provide a manuscript. At the conference, 175 post ers were presented. Abstracts have been published in a separate volume. It is very much appreciated that all the 1981 Nobel laureates, Nicolaas Bloembergen, Arthur Schawlow and Kai Siegbahn, were able to attend and deliver their invited talks. Professor Schawlow summed up the conference and this too is presented here. The con ference also benefited considerably from the presence of Professor 1.1. Rabi, who gave a much appreciated talk at the conference dinner. As this talk was given without a manuscript, it could unfortunately not be included here.
