Download or read book The Severed Head written by Julia Kristeva and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned philosopher and cultural theorist Kristeva (Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection) offers an extended consideration of artistic figurations of the severed head, the organizing theme to an exhibition she coordinated at the Louvre in 1998. Though she follows a single historical trajectory, moving from Paleolithic skull cults to antique Greek sculpture to the Surrealist drawings, Kristeva eschews the disciplinary constraints of art history, instead employing psychoanalysis to explore the intertwined problems of representation and mortality posed by the severed head. For Kristeva, the capacity to figure the life of the mind first requires a confrontation with this horrific object that stands at the boundary between life and death, registering not only the loss of corporeal form but also subjective interiority. Though this book does not engage with recent images of decapitation, it is not without contemporary political-cultural import; for Kristeva, these cruel artistic figurations offer us the capacity to contemplate the sacred within a technology-driven contemporary visual culture. Verdict While a challenging text, this beautifully written and richly layered meditation on mortality and representation will undoubtedly appeal to those readers interested in semiotic and psychoanalytically informed readings of art.-Jonathan Patkowski, CUNY Graduate Ctr.(c) Copyright 2012. Download or read book Malibu Bluff written by Janna King and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malibu is the perfect playground for a new crew of seasonaires in the thrilling follow-up to last summer's must-read debut. Every summer is curated as a dream for six twenty-something seasonaires handpicked by Lydon Wyld, the chic founder of her namesake clothing line. This summer takes these influential brand ambassadors to the West Coast. Mia, a resourceful young designer, is chosen to lead the pack—roped back into a second season by a deal she can't refuse, and the hope to leave behind her grief over her mother's death for the California sun. Mia is thankful that she won't have to live with Presley, a former seasonaire who is now handling Lyndon Wyld's public relations after making a meal out of the tragedy that struck in Nantucket the summer before. In Malibu, she will share a stunning modern manse with Eve, an outspoken activist; Alex, a gorgeous boundary pusher; Chase, a warm-hearted surfer; Oliver, a preppy charmer; and enigmatic Brandon, the son of Lyndon's business partner. Brandon is also the producer of the brand's new digital channel, which will up the stakes for the seasonaire's exposure. Their antics are juicy entertainment for their throngs of fans and followers. But trouble from Mia's past comes back to haunt her, threatening not just her future, but the fate of the other seasonaires. And when the line between what's real and what's staged gets blurred, the results could be deadly.
Download or read book Existence as a Real Property written by Francesco Berto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This profound exploration of one of the core notions of philosophy—the concept of existence itself—reviews, then counters (via Meinongian theory), the mainstream philosophical view running from Hume to Frege, Russell, and Quine, summarized thus by Kant: “Existence is not a predicate.” The initial section of the book presents a comprehensive introduction to, and critical evaluation of, this mainstream view. The author moves on to provide the first systematic survey of all the main Meinongian theories of existence, which, by contrast, reckon existence to be a real, full-fledged property of objects that some things possess, and others lack. As an influential addition to the research literature, the third part develops the most up-to-date neo-Meinongian theory called Modal Meinongianism, applies it to specific fields such as the ontology of fictional objects, and discusses its open problems, laying the groundwork for further research. In accordance with the latest trends in analytic ontology, the author prioritizes a meta-ontological viewpoint, adopting a dual definition of meta-ontology as the discourse on the meaning of being, and as the discourse on the tools and methods of ontological enquiry. This allows a balanced assessment of philosophical views on a cost-benefit basis, following multiple criteria for theory evaluation. Compelling and revealing, this new publication is a vital addition to contemporary philosophical ontology.
