Book Justice Pending Indigenous Peoples and Other Good Causes

Download or read book Justice Pending Indigenous Peoples and Other Good Causes written by Gudmundur Alfredsson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume deal with many of the issues, which have been and continue to be on the international law and human rights agenda of Erica-Irene A. Daes. She is an international personality, with a long and varied career, but she has been and is passionately involved in a wide range of issues related directly or indirectly to the Greek experience and the Greek diaspora. The energy and output of Erica Daes culminated in her tireless efforts to seek protection for the world's indigenous peoples. It is in this capacity that the international human rights community has best learned to know and appreciate her. As an independent expert, she has served as Chairman of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations and she has carried out studies on indigenous land rights, intellectual and cultural rights, and indigenous heritage. She played a key role in bringing about an international year (1993) and a decade (1995-2004) for the promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples. Most importantly, Erica Daes was the principal drafter of the UN draft declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples, which has become known as the Daes Declaration and which is reproduced in an annex to this book. Other annexes contain excerpts from her documents prepared in the context of her UN career, some of which have not been previously published.

Book excerpt: "Recognition of, and respect for the rights and freedoms of indigenous peoples is an important subject that has received growing attention from the international community especially during the last 25 years." "Erica-Irene Daes, the author of this book has been at the heart of the international discussion on indigenous peoples' rights. This book is her personal record of more than twenty years of efforts to promote the cause of indigenous peoples and the recognition of their fundamental rights by the United Nations. Through this account of her own experience, the author commemorates the suffering, oppression and discrimination experienced by indigenous peoples, and outlines their continuing struggle for freedom and for cultural, and physical survival. The book is also about her discovery of indigenous knowledge, heritage and culture, through her close relationships with many indigenous nations such as the Sami people of Europe; the Cree of Quebec (Eeyou Istchee); the Aboriginal peoples of Australia and the peoples of the Torres Start Islands; the Maya of Mexico and Guatemala; and the Ainu of Japan."--BOOK JACKET.

This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unique cultures of minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide – spanning a wide variety of customs and practices – are under threat. This year’s edition of State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples highlights the impact of land dispossession, forced assimilation and other forms of discrimination on the most fundamental aspects of their identity, including language, art, traditional knowledge and spirituality. But while the effects of this attrition can be devastating, minority and indigenous cultures have also been critical in strengthening communities and providing activists with a platform to fight for their rights. As this volume illustrates, ensuring that the cultural freedoms of minorities and indigenous peoples are protected is essential if their other rights are also to be respected.
