Book excerpt: A burned-out pop diva runs away from fame and falls for a handsome Roman Catholic priest, who allows her to hide inside a Church rectory in an idyllic small town known as the real-life Mayberry. Grace Stevens has it all. Beauty. Fame. Money. But, at only twenty-seven, all has become too much. Grace has become a prisoner to her own fame. She’s tired of the crazy tour schedule, the intrusive fans, the paparazzi hounding her, and her sleazy business manager controlling her. She yearns for a normal life. And she wants to find love, true love. Danny O’Connor is a thirty-one-year-old Roman Catholic priest and a combat veteran of the Afghan War. He suffers from severe PTSD. Danny made a battlefield promise to God that if He got him safely home from war, he’d become a priest. Reluctantly, Danny agrees to allow Grace to hide inside the St. Mary’s Church rectory, where she takes up residence with him. What he didn’t count on, though, was falling in love with her. Now, he’s confronted with the ultimate choice—will he choose God or the girl? Will he break his vow of celibacy in the heat of passion or abide by his commitment to the Church? Just Grace and Danny is a slow burn but steamy romance about the power of love to mend brokenness. It’s a triumph of small-town values over the bright lights of the big city. It will get into your laughter, your heart, your soul. And maybe even a little into your tears. And leave you craving penny candy from a small town five and dime store, and bubble gum kisses in the rain.

Book excerpt: Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative is a collection of fifty full-color drawings based on my memories of growing up "different". All along the way of development, I was told I was doing it wrong. Like all gay or creative kids, I knew I was different from the others and they knew it too. I wanted to create this book to help illustrate those moments, but also to help the reader remember their own stories. I wasn't the only little boy who put on something fun and tried to entertain their parent's guests, I'm sure of it. If you grew up with a different point of view, this book is for you. Flip the pages and watch Danny grow from birth to eighteen in fifty drawings. Each page a step in personal discovery. When I grew up there was no help for me. There was no one telling me that I was fine just as I am. I needed to make sure that the adult me sent out the word that you are not only fine but beautiful. Be you. It's your life and the people who love you deserve to know you not the person you play. If you have someone in your life who doesn't fit the mold, I hope this book helps you to see it's OK to be different. Enjoy Danny's growing up. I did! --Dan Crowley, Author & ArtistPraise for Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative "Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative, shows us what it means to grow up heart-open and human. But few saw us that way when we were kids. So Danny, with his winsome humor-filled drawings, reminds us of those wonder years, as we struggled to find our place under the rainbow. I feel like I am coming home again, but this time, in a happy and healed way. Bravo, Danny! Shine on!! --Christopher Radko, award-winning designer "Dan Crowley explores with humor and empathy all the various childhood pitfalls in growing up gay in a less than fabulous world. Many were right out of my childhood, such as spotting a doll you always wanted in the bedroom of a friend's sister. So much of it hit home." --Mel Odom, Artist "Dan Crowley's book, Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative is a wonderful thing. It speaks to children who may need to know they're not different and that their lives are not a mistake. Youngsters who are curious about their own sexuality before even knowing what that word means. And it speaks in a way their straight parents may be unable to because they don't have the words nor the experiences. It does so in a sweet, gentle, and funny way. And adults will learn, too; about same-sex relationships from a "knowing" point of view. This book is a gift in every sense of the word." --Steve Kmetko, award-winning journalist "Dan Crowley has a natural gift for homily, for taking lived experience and expressing stories of love and gratitude, inspiration and grace. He also has a silly, sweet (and slightly wicked) sense of humor. Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative combines personal and universal stories about growing up gay -- the good, the bad, and the embarrassing -- and reminds us it's all worth it, if only we will persevere." --Tom Bachtel, Illustrator, and Caricaturist, Longtime Illustrator fo the New Yorker's Talk of the Town

Book excerpt: The third-grader Grace Stewart gets stuck with the name “Just Grace” when she tries to distinguish herself from the three other Graces in her class. Grace is plenty different, though. She has a “teeny-tiny superpower,” for instance—she can tell if someone is unhappy and often tries to fix it. When she concocts an elaborate scheme to help her neighbor Mrs. Luther feel less lonely, however, her good intentions backfire rather dramatically. Headlines such as “What Happened At Home That Was Completely Surprising” and “Spying For A Good Reason Is Not Bad” keep things lively, as do various lists (“Boy Things,” “Rooms You Can Jump In”), comic strips, and the author’s cartoonish spot art. A funny glimpse into a third-grader’s madcap world of dashed hopes, perceived enemies, possible friends, cats, and sandwiches. Uniquely sincere, and by turns tender, raw, and hopeful, Gregory's idiosyncratic text and illustrations capture the darkest and lightest moments of his "year of magical drawing." Book PROOF

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Montgomery
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2014-05-27
  • ISBN : 0310513901
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book PROOF written by Daniel Montgomery and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s time to open your eyes to the freeing power of authentic grace—grace that releases us from trying to earn God's favor, grace that enables us to rest in the finished work of Christ, grace that liberates from the tyranny of trying to please others. That's what the theology of Martin Luther and John Calvin did in their own day for the people around them. Time magazine recently dubbed Calvinism as one of the top ten ideas changing the world right now. And yet most of these discussions center on the issue of predestination or on whether particular people agree with the five points of Calvinism. Daniel Montgomery and Timothy Paul Jones think it's time to rescue the theology of the Reformers from such stale scholasticizing and to declare anew the dangerous and intoxicating joy of the gospel that theyproclaimed. PROOF stands for planned grace, resurrecting grace, outrageous grace, overcoming grace, and forever grace. The authors offer proof of God’s grace upon which people can stand against the attacks of legalism that have led many of God's people to lose sight of the freedom and joy of the gospel. And this proof is intoxicating—it’s like a 200-proof drink that will leave you spiritually staggering at its effect on your life. God’s grace not only declares us “not guilty!” in his presence, it changes our relationship with God—forever.?

Book The Haunting of the Owens Family

Download or read book The Haunting of the Owens Family written by Patricia A. Perry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Haunting of the Owens Family follows the Owenses for approximately 1 year, from 1974 to 1975. From most outside appearances, the Owenses are a normal, middle-class family who live in a big house in a nice neighborhood. Both the parents and the children have their crosses to bear, some ordinary and of this world, and some not. In spite of this, they each seem able to get up in the morning and face, if not accept, what lies ahead. But, walking a rope such as this can be done for only so long. What is truly going on in that house would cause the strongest of spirits to turn away. This novel follows a family as it tries to survive domestic abuse. It depicts the effects of screaming and throwing and yelling and the use of words meant to kill. It shows what happens when there is an ongoing war in your home. The Owenses story illustrates that what you do in front of your children, you do to your children. And the consequences are much more deleterious than those not realizing, not meaning to harm, expect. Amidst the ugliness, however, there are also dreams, magic, and hope. And the presence of ghostly activity in the Owenses house causes the reader to question the true catalyst of what has found this family. Theres Meggie, the wife and mother, who has lived most of her life the way she has been expected to, not questioning, not rising up, just following her duty, knowing somewhere inside that she has a penance to pay. There are the children: Elizabeth, whose anger is making a slow burn through her skin, who is most likely the only one in this family who actually sees what is going on. Grace, whose visions and clear eyes lend a certain magic to an otherwise oftentimes hopeless world. Danny, the only boy, whose dedication to making things right, trying to place order back into a chaotic world, almost ruins him. And Annabelle, whose tiny body and youngest mind help her to hide, but also cause her never to be seen -- not when it counts. And, finally, theres Dan, the husband and father -- a kind, funny man at times -- he finds himself in a place he never intended, where rage and a sense of injustice start the quakes in his house, in his children. This novel is intended for adults and is not appropriate for children.
