Book Down Home

Download or read book Down Home written by William Mackey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-01-30 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969 after 20 years living in New York City, Engineer, Photographer & Educator William Henry Mackey, Jr. returned to the rural Georgia backwoods where he had been raised. During the 20 years since he had left, the South had undergone drastic changes, from the Civil Rights Era to the technological advances in farming techniques, yet at the same time it remained the same simple place where he had grown up. Mackey proceeded to photograph and interview friends, family and other residents of the area in an effort to document their history and recollections of an era that was fast fading under the onslaught of 'progress'. The result is a fascinating look into the legacy of rural Blacks in coastal Georgia and the political, technological and social changes they underwent during the century since the Emancipation Proclamation.

Book excerpt: One year after the death of Mao Tse-tung, the Politburo is mired in a struggle between the hard line right and several groups of moderates unable to coalesce into a unified opposition. A brilliant man who stays mainly in the shadows, and is unknown to Western Intelligence, is looked to by the rabid generals of the right as the only person capable of giving them what they want - a plan to establish China as a world leader. His exceptionally gifted mind finally does this. His plan will take advantage of the divided Politburo and includes duping the leaders of Vietnam and North Korea as pawns in his scheme. He regards it as a bonus that his plan will kill millions of people. One apparently minor consequence of this plan comes to the attention of, and intrigues, the CIAs head of operations in South East Asia. The more he digs the more he becomes convinced that, although his analysis is still extremely vague, his gut is correct and America is in grave danger. But Washington dismisses his conclusion. Two years after defeat in Vietnam, the last thing they want to countenance is another entanglement in Asia. In frustration he contacts a retired soldier and begs him to investigate. Colonel Philip Melville was the most successful leader of Special Forces in the Vietnam conflict. The trail begins by his infiltrating back into Ho Chi Minh City and leads to Hong Kong and Beijing. Along the way, vague pieces of analysis become unthinkable catastrophic possibilities. Still Washington refuses to intervene, leaving Melville as the only barrier to Armageddon. His nightmare turns to chilling reality when he learns time is rapidly running out.

Book The Dad Dialogues

Download or read book The Dad Dialogues written by George Bowering and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique book of correspondence, two men from different generations write to each other about the burdens, anxieties, and singular joys of parenthood. Thirtysomething Charles Demers and 80-year-old George Bowering are both celebrated authors and the best of friends, and soon both will be the fathers of daughters. The letters begin as Charles and his wife discover they will become parents; he expresses his hopes and fears of impending fatherhood, compounded by his OCD and his own father's illness, while George recalls his own experiences raising a daughter in the 1970s and his own anxieties about bringing a child into a troubled world. Together, their thoughtful, funny, candid missives reveal what fathers know (or don't know) about raising daughters, as well as themselves and each other. Their combined observations make for a passionate, funny and moving portrait of fatherhood in all its imperfect, beautiful glory. George Bowering is Canada's first poet laureate and an officer of the Order of Canada. He is the author of more than eighty books, the most recent of which include The Hockey Scribbler, Writing the Okanagan, and Pinboy. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. Charles Demers is a comedian, performer, and writer. His previous books are The Horrors (Douglas & McIntyre) and Vancouver Special (Arsenal). He lives in Vancouver, where he teaches writing at the University of British Columbia.

Book excerpt: This is an intense love story wrapped up in CIA and KGB activities and intrigue. The two main characters, Mollie Sands and Jim Owens, have a long and stormy relationship over the eleven years. Mollie, an Alaskan woman who has to survive more hurt than most people ever expect to. Jim, a former Military Intelligence Officer and finally a CIA operative of much merit. After having hurt each other significantly several times the relationship falls apart for several years. During these years the two of them continue to work together. Jim has several relationships with other women during this time. Mollie has to contend with all that while still loving him. This is a detailed writing about the work they were involved in during the eleven years and all the hurts Mollie endured. It goes deeply into the thinking of some of the characters, revealing their weaknesses and fears as well as some of their strengths. One might ask why a woman would tolerate all that Mollied did and still keep her sanity? And why would she tolerate all the other things he did with other women and not completely dismiss him from her life? And why would she insist he tell her all the details of everything he did, knowing she would suffer tremendously? The amazing thing is that she seems to have kept her sanity while struggling mightly within herself. Happenings brought on by themselves, the KGB, and their own organization, the CIA. There is love; there are assassinations, much intrigue, loneliness, loss of several close friends as the CIA and the KGB battle each other. It is set in Alaska, but takes place in many parts of the world. It is very detailed and is a compelling story, one worthy of much psychological investigation and thought.
