Book excerpt: Guy is convinced that the man and woman with whom he has lived all his life cannot possibly be what they claim to be--his parents. They're too weird! Would anyone else's mother tie-dye every pair of underwear in the house? Would anyone else's father perform the famous oyster trick by sucking an oyster up his nose with a horrible noise and spitting it out of his mouth--in a restaurant? No--except maybe the parents of the weirdest, craziest, most unappealing kid in Guy's whole class, Bob-o. But Bob-o's parents are as normal as parents come--just like Guy. This gives Guy food for thought, especially when he finds out that he and Bob-o have the same birthday, and were born in the same hospital! Guy and his best friend Buzz are determined to find out the truth about what really took place the day Guy and Bob-o were born. Readers will delight in Weeks's humorous yet sensitive handling of this classic adolescent phase--the search for identity. 00-01 Texas Bluebonnet Award Masterlist

Book Peacocks Chameleons Centaurs

Download or read book Peacocks Chameleons Centaurs written by Wayne Brekhus and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a gay man living in the suburbs? Do you identify primarily as gay, or suburban, or some combination of the two? For that matter, how does anyone decide what his or her identity is? In this first-ever ethnography of American gay suburbanites, Wayne H. Brekhus demonstrates that who one is depends at least in part on where and when one is. For many urban gay men, being homosexual is key to their identity because they live, work, and socialize in almost exclusively gay circles. Brekhus calls such men "lifestylers" or peacocks. Chameleons or "commuters," on the other hand, live and work in conventional suburban settings, but lead intense gay social and sexual lives outside the suburbs. Centaurs, meanwhile, or "integrators," mix typical suburban jobs and homes with low-key gay social and sexual activities. In other words, lifestylers see homosexuality as something you are, commuters as something you do, and integrators as part of yourself. Ultimately, Brekhus shows that lifestyling, commuting, and integrating embody competing identity strategies that occur not only among gay men but across a broad range of social categories. What results, then, is an innovative work that will interest sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, and students of gay culture.

Book Banksy The Man behind the Wall

    Book Details:
  • Author : Will Ellsworth-Jones
  • Publisher : Frances Lincoln
  • Release : 2021-10-19
  • ISBN : 0711264333
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Banksy The Man behind the Wall written by Will Ellsworth-Jones and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fully revised and richly illustrated edition, author and journalist Will Ellsworth-Jones pieces together a complete picture of the life and work of Banksy, perhaps the most iconic, enigmatic and controversial artist of modern times. For someone who shuns the limelight so completely that he conceals his name, never shows his face and gives interviews only by email, Banksy is remarkably famous. This fully updated and illustrated story of Banksy’s life and career builds an intriguing picture of his world and unpicks its contradictions. Whether art or vandalism, anti-establishment or sell-out, Banksy and his work have become a cultural phenomenon and the question ‘Who is Banksy?’ is as much about his career as it is ‘the man behind the wall’. From his beginnings as a Bristol graffiti artist, his artwork is now sold at auction for seven-figure sums and hangs on celebrities’ walls. The appearance of a new Banksy is national news, his documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop was Oscar-nominated and people queue for hours to see his latest exhibition. Now moreNational Treasure than edgy outsider, who is Banksy and how did he become what he is today? This book charts Banksy's journey from the graffiti-scrawled streets of Barton Hill, the working class neighbourhood of Bristol where he and others covered the walls with vibrant pieces while trying to avoid the police, through to some of the most prestigious galleries of the world, where his daring acts of guerilla art have forced us to reconsider how we define as art. From the artist's own words to recollections of friends and colleagues, this book also examines the contradictions of Banksy's life: charting how a privately educated boy from a middle class area of Bristol reinvented himself as a rogue and an outlaw who would take the art world by storm. With beautiful reproductions of some of his most controversial and recognisable works, this detailed study is a truly indispensible guide to understanding the ultimate art rebel whose work is no less relevant today than it was when he first started out some thirty years ago.

Book excerpt: Some Decisions Change Your Day. Some Will Change Your Life. While the headlines screamed “Hollywood Heartthrob Marries Girl Next Door,” the public relationship of Jack Harrington and Grace Winslowe never revealed the private struggles that threatened to pull them apart–and when celebrity biographer Jada Eastman starts digging, she discovers that there’s more to this couple than anyone could guess. Their relationship began like a scene from one of Jack’s movies. Leaving behind a dead-end relationship and the bitter Chicago winter, Grace had moved to Southern California to start a new life. Meanwhile, Jack had established himself as an up-and-comer with considerable acting talent, and a private heartache. When a fateful accident pulled the two of them together, they couldn’t avoid their initial attraction or the vast differences in their values and lifestyles. Now, against the backdrop of Beverly Hills and the 24/7 nature of the entertainment world, Jada grapples with her own beliefs as she encounters the spiritual chasm of this famous couple. Can Grace and Jack face the consequences of their own personal histories–and can the biographer avoid being affected? As the three of them examine the couple’s bittersweet story, it becomes clear that everyday decisions can carry lifetime consequences when individual worlds collide.

Book Urban Captivity Narratives

Download or read book Urban Captivity Narratives written by Heather Hillsburg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolving from a rigorous study of post-9/11 women's writing, Dr. Heather Hillsburg's new monograph identifies an emerging genre, which she names Urban Captivity Narratives. Using examples ranging from memoir to young adult fiction, each of the texts examined in the study follows a female protagonist who has survived abduction, been held captive for months or even years, and subjected to sexual, emotional, and physical abuse by their captor. Hillsburg contextualizes these narratives, and takes into consideration our current political atmosphere, the role of patriarchy, and various social anxieties that come into play when discussing the kind of oppression seen in these narratives.

Book The Only Average Guy

Download or read book The Only Average Guy written by John Filion and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to go beyond the scandal and distraction of the world's most infamous local politician, and reveal what drives Rob Ford and the many voters who steadfastly support him. Eye-opening and at times frightening, The Only Average Guy cuts through the uproar that followed Ford everywhere. A journalist before entering politics, Filion peels back the layers of an extremely complicated man. Weaving together the personal and political stories, he explains how Ford's tragic weaknesses helped propel him to power before leading to his inevitable failure. Through Ford, the book also explains the growing North American phenomenon by which angry voters are attracted to outspoken candidates flaunting outrageous flaws. For fifteen years, Toronto city councillor John Filion has had an uncommon relationship with Rob Ford. Sitting two seats away from the wildly unpredictable councillor from Etobicoke, who served as mayor from 2010 to 2014, Filion formed an unlikely camaraderie that allowed him to look beyond Rob's red-faced persona, seeing a boy still longing for the approval of his father, struggling with the impossible expectations of a family that fancied itself a political dynasty.

Book Prayer Force

  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Prayer Force written by Kenneth J. Spink and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many 21st Century Christians have excused themselves from the Biblical mandate to engage in effectual prayer and meditation. God is unlimited, yet He chooses to demonstrate His power through prayer. "Prayer Force" is a call to the believer for greater intimacy and communion with God. Prayer is not a magic wand. Perhaps the chief reason believers do not pray consistently is because they do not see their prayers answered. Without God's prerequisites, prayer remains unanswered. Misconceptions regarding prayer must be dispelled with the foundational Biblical descriptions. Priorities dictate schedules and schedules reveal priorities. If prayer is not a priority in action, it is not a priority at all. A look at God's view from Scripture and men's view from life, combine to make this book a dynamic propeller to fight the good fight on our knees. Pastor Kenneth J. Spink grew up in western New York, the 7th of 12 children. He is a graduate of Baptist Bible College and Baptist Bible Seminary of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Debbie, have four children. He has served as Senior Pastor of the Berea Baptist Church in Berea, OH since 1984, on the Ohio Association of Regular Baptist Churches Council of 12 and the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches Council of 18. He has also served on the Baptist Mid-Mission General Council since 1988, where he presently fills the role of Chairman. In addition to his ministry as pastor, he has had numerous opportunities to develop and teach college level Bible courses. Pastor Spink has preached and encouraged believers in Hong Kong, Japan, Jamaica, Brazil, Chile, as well as Alaska and several other States.
