Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Author George Manus has collected 1001 WORDS FOR THE ROAD from his series of 10 books by the same name, which in both format and content are well suited as reading matter while travelling. Each of the 10 books are presenting short reflections and puns in both English and Norwegian. He has named this book, FOOD for THOUGHT, with subtitle, 1001 short reflections. It contains only the English reflections. The table of contents which is in alphabetical order provides easy access to his 1001 reflections. Most of them have been written over the past few years, while some were put on paper already back in the late 1980s. He is fully aware that quantity does not in any way mean quality, but as he says, who judges good from less good and bad? If adopted literary norms are applied, I suppose it is simple, but if one isn't to judge based on given norms, I suppose it becomes a question of who likes what. If you accept that everyone is right based on their prerequisites, which is hard to deny, maybe you end up with something for everyone? He says that all his short reflection are expressions of his spontaneous thoughts and opinions, based on his prerequisites when they were written. Happy reading January 2021

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As COVID-19 shut down the world in the early months of 2020, professor and writer David von Schlichten decided to keep a diary to help him cope with the crisis. As a scholar of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, von Schlichten recalled her journal that she kept while she and her dying husband and daughter were under quarantine in 1803. They had been forced into a lazaretto upon arriving in Italy due to fears among the Italians that the family might carry yellow fever, which was ravaging New York, the Setons's home city. Elizabeth wrote about the ordeal in detail that is heart-breaking, mystical, poetic, and inspiring. In Quarantine: How Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Helped Me Through the Early Months of the COVID-19 Pandemic, von Schlichten shares his diary written during the first three months of the pandemic. He writes candidly about his struggles and doubts while also offering an insightful analysis of Seton's quarantine journal and what it has to say to us today. Quarantine is an accessible, intelligent, spiritual, and heartfelt reflection on the power of Seton's wise words of hope for any crisis.

For years she walked the safe, expected path, until one day she could feel God calling her to boldly step out and follow him into new places, which led her to raise a large, non-traditional family that looked different than she ever imagined. It was a winding path to motherhood, complete with heartbreak from failed adoptions, challenging pregnancies, and secondary infertility, but through it all Angela found the unique adventure God had for her. She has shared her family’s stories on her popular YouTube channel, This Gathered Nest, and now invites us in to go deeper and listen to where God might be calling us to go and who we’ve been tasked with loving, no matter how unusual (or just plain crazy) it may sound! The beauty of God’s plan is he uses imperfect people to bring about perfectly beautiful stories.

Book Lawyers Medicine

  • Author : Imogen Goold
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2009-09-16
  • ISBN : 1847315348

Download or read book Lawyers Medicine written by Imogen Goold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how the requirements, limitations and intellectual structure of the British legal process have shaped medicine and medical practice. The story of this inter-relationship is greatly under-researched, which is particularly concerning given that the legal system remains a significant and pervasive influence on medicine and its practice to this day. The question which unifies the series of historical studies presented here is whether legal consideration of medical practice and concepts has played a part in the construction of medical concepts and affected developments in medical practice - in other words how the external, legal gaze has shaped the way medicine itself conceptualises some of its practices and classifications. The majority of the chapters consider this question in the context of the development and application of legislation, but the influence of court processes is also considered. Other themes which emerge from the book include the nature and exclusivity of medical expertise, the impact of public opinion on the development of medical legislation, and the difficulty the legal system has faced in dealing with new medical developments. The chapters are arranged chronologically, with an introduction drawing out themes that emerge from the chapters as a whole.

Book excerpt: This riveting story of the typhus and cholera epidemics that swept through New York City in 1892 has been updated with a new preface that tackles the COVID-19 pandemic. Winner, 2003 Arthur J. Viseltear Prize for Outstanding Book in the History of Public Health, American Public Health Association In Quarantine! Howard Markel traces the course of the typhus and cholera epidemics that swept through New York City in 1892. The story is told from the point of view of those involved—the public health doctors who diagnosed and treated the victims, the newspaper reporters who covered the stories, the government officials who established and enforced policy, and, most importantly, the immigrants themselves. Drawing on rarely cited stories from the Yiddish American press, immigrant diaries and letters, and official accounts, Markel follows the immigrants on their journey from a squalid and precarious existence in Russia's Pale of Settlement, to their passage in steerage, to New York's Lower East Side, to the city's quarantine islands. This updated edition features a new preface from the author that reflects on the themes of the book in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time of renewed anti-immigrant sentiment and newly emerging infectious diseases, Quarantine! provides a historical context for considering some of the significant problems that face American society today.
