Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the upheavals of the Civil War and Reconstruction shattered the plantation economy of the Old South, white southerners turned to the railroad to reconstruct capitalism in the region. Examining the rapid growth, systemization, and consolidation of the southern railroad network, R. Scott Huffard Jr. demonstrates how economic and political elites used the symbolic power of the railroad to proclaim a New South had risen. The railroad was more than just an economic engine of growth; it was a powerful symbol of capitalism's advance. However, as the railroad spread across the region, it also introduced new dangers and anxieties. White southerners came to fear the railroad would speed an upending of the racial order, epidemics of yellow fever, train wrecks, violent robberies, and domination by corporate monopolies. To complete the reconstruction of capitalism, railroad corporations and their allies had to sever the negative aspects of railroading from capitalism's powers and deny the railroad's transformative powers to black southerners. This study of the New South's experience with the growing railroad network provides valuable insights into the history of capitalism--how it evolves, expands, and overcomes resistance.

Book The Great Realization

Download or read book The Great Realization written by Tomos Roberts (Tomfoolery) and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Today as a book "to ease kids’ anxiety about coronavirus.” We all need hope. Humans have an extraordinary capacity to battle through adversity, but only if they have something to cling onto: a belief or hope that maybe, one day, things will be better. This idea sparked The Great Realization. Sharing the truths we may find hard to tell but also celebrating the things—from simple acts of kindness and finding joy in everyday activities, to the creativity within us all—that have brought us together during lockdown, it gives us hope in this time of global crisis. Written for his younger brother and sister in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tomos Roberts’s heartfelt poem is as timely as it is timeless. Its message of hope and resilience, of rebirth and renewal, has captured the hearts of children and adults all over the globe—and the glimpse it offers of a fairer, kinder, more sustainable world continues to inspire thousands every day. With Tomos Roberts’s heartfelt poem and beautiful illustrations by award-winning artist Nomoco, The Great Realization is a profound work, at once striking and reassuring, reminding readers young and old that in the face of adversity there are still dreams to be dreamt and kindnesses to be shared and hope. There is still hope. We now call it The Great Realization and, yes, since then there have been many. But that’s the story of how it started . . . and why hindsight’s 2020.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As COVID-19 shut down the world in the early months of 2020, professor and writer David von Schlichten decided to keep a diary to help him cope with the crisis. As a scholar of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, von Schlichten recalled her journal that she kept while she and her dying husband and daughter were under quarantine in 1803. They had been forced into a lazaretto upon arriving in Italy due to fears among the Italians that the family might carry yellow fever, which was ravaging New York, the Setons's home city. Elizabeth wrote about the ordeal in detail that is heart-breaking, mystical, poetic, and inspiring. In Quarantine: How Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Helped Me Through the Early Months of the COVID-19 Pandemic, von Schlichten shares his diary written during the first three months of the pandemic. He writes candidly about his struggles and doubts while also offering an insightful analysis of Seton's quarantine journal and what it has to say to us today. Quarantine is an accessible, intelligent, spiritual, and heartfelt reflection on the power of Seton's wise words of hope for any crisis.

It was a winding path to motherhood, complete with heartbreak from failed adoptions, challenging pregnancies, and secondary infertility, but through it all Angela found the unique adventure God had for her. She has shared her family’s stories on her popular YouTube channel, This Gathered Nest, and now invites us in to go deeper and listen to where God might be calling us to go and who we’ve been tasked with loving, no matter how unusual (or just plain crazy) it may sound! Book Mediterranean quarantines 1750 1914

Download or read book Mediterranean quarantines 1750 1914 written by John Chircop and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean quarantines investigates how quarantine, the centuries-old practice of collective defence against epidemics, experienced significant transformations from the eighteenth century in the Mediterranean Sea, its original birthplace. The new epidemics of cholera and the development of bacteriology and hygiene, European colonial expansion, the intensification of commercial interchanges, the technological revolution in maritime and land transportation and the modernisation policies in Islamic countries were among the main factors behind such transformations. The book focuses on case studies on the European and Islamic shores of the Mediterranean showing the multidimensional nature of quarantine, the intimate links that sanitary administrations and institutions had with the territorial organisation of states, international trade, political regimes and the construction of national, colonial and professional identities
