Download or read book Taking Your First Shot written by Lynne Finch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbers don’t lie; more and more women are purchasing guns and learning to shoot! While shooting used to be a male-dominated sport, women across the country have begun discovering that a trip to the range not only is relaxing, but also brings with it a sense of strength and empowerment. Taking Your First Shot is an introductory guide perfect for either those stepping out onto the range for the first time or those looking to brush up on their skills. Author Lynne Finch coaches women on the decision to learn to shoot, how to find formal training, selecting and purchasing a handgun, defensive versus practice ammunition, storing and caring for your gun, and concealed carry options. Along with learning the shooting basics, Finch also teaches readers the importance of situational awareness and the basics of self-defense. Sometimes a gun isn’t always an answer, and it’s important to have a proportional response to the situation. Finch begins with teaching readers how to become aware of their surroundings, what to watch for, and how to respond. From there, she goes on to define proportional response and why carrying pepper spray, a kubotan, or even a whistle can make all the difference. Learning to shoot is a personal decision, but with the proper training and practice, shooting can become both an enjoyable and liberating sport.
Download or read book Shooters written by Abigail A. Kohn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequenting gun shops and shooting ranges, and devoting particular attention to those whose interest in weaponry extends beyond the casual, Abigail A. Kohn captures in finegrained and often entertaining, yet always humane, detail how gun owners actually think and feel about their guns. Through her conversations--with cowboy action shooters at a regional match, sport shooters, hunters, with shooters of all ages and races--we hear of the "savage beauty" of a beautifully crafted long gun, of the powerful historical import owners attach to their guns, of the sense of empowerment that comes with shooting skill, and the visceral thrill of discharging a dangerous weapon. Cutting through the cliches that link gun ownership with violent, criminal subcultures and portray shooters as "gun nuts" or potential terrorists, Kohn provides us with a lively and untainted portrait of American gun enthusiasts.
Download or read book Her Best Shot written by Laura Browder and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gun-toting woman holds enormous symbolic significance in American culture. For over two centuries, women who pick up guns have disrupted the popular association of guns and masculinity, spurring debates about women's capabilities for violence as well as their capacity for full citizenship. In Her Best Shot, Laura Browder examines the relationship between women and guns and the ways in which the figure of the armed woman has served as a lightning rod for cultural issues. Utilizing autobiographies, advertising, journalism, novels, and political tracts, among other sources, Browder traces appearances of the armed woman across a chronological spectrum from the American Revolution to the present and an ideological spectrum ranging from the Black Panthers to right-wing militias. Among the colorful characters presented here are Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the American Revolution; Pauline Cushman, who posed as a Confederate to spy for Union forces during the Civil War; Wild West sure-shot Annie Oakley; African explorer Osa Johnson; 1930s gangsters Ma Barker and Bonnie Parker; and Patty Hearst, the hostage-turned-revolutionary-turned-victim. With her entertaining and provocative analysis, Browder demonstrates that armed women both challenge and reinforce the easy equation that links guns, manhood, and American identity.

Download or read book The Gun Book for Girls written by Silvio Calabi and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third installment in the popular series of practical books about guns and shooting is aimed at women of all ages—the fastest-growing segment of the sport—and it couldn’t come at a better time. America and firearms literally grew up together, but today guns are often simply linked to crime and violence; gun control has become a polarizing political issue; and misinformation about firearms is spreading. Now three experts have tackled the subject in a series of books that explores the realities of guns and shooting and sets the record straight about some common misconceptions. On the heels of The Gun Book for Boys and The Gun Book for Parents, The Gun Book for Girls is for girls (and women) interested in guns and shooting but who have little or no background in firearms. Through example and anecdote, the book emphasizes safety and proper usage, and it defines terms and provides hands-on advice about using and maintaining guns. It also covers firearms, shooting methods, clothing and accessories for women, profiles females who shoot and who work in the gun trade, and discusses the issues around guns for self-defense (a topic of special interest to women). Like the other two titles, this book is non-political and written in an easy-to-understand conversational tone. Each book is thoroughly illustrated, and content is presented in easily managed portions that can be read in series or singly, all backed up with an index.
Download or read book Gun Women written by Mary Zeiss Stange and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stange and Oyster (religion and women's studies, Skidmore College and psychology, U. of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, respectively) describe their personal relationships to guns, express appreciation for the beauty and skill of shooting, and excoriate the hyperbole on either side of the debate over guns. While asserting the feminist aspects of gun ownership in slightly more nuanced terms than usual, the volume is perhaps too dependent on anecdote to answer the philosophical, psychological, and political questions it engages. Download or read book Read My Shorts written by Swift Smith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Swift Montana Smith's book entitled READ MY SHORTS is mostly about Cowboy Action Shooting and his personal experiences within the sport, there are also stories about the Wild West included within. The book is split into two parts with the first part being short stories that can be read in less than an hour; having said that, the eighteen stories listed in Part One will take several hours to read. The addition of the longer, short story in Part Two of the book about a Wild West character called Edgar Windfal is a pleasant narrative and very interesting. While some of the stories appear to be actual experiences, many of them are fictional in nature and have a comedic tone and are meant to be amusing. A few of the stories are serious and emotional; including the last one entitled Edgar Windfal - The Lucky Stone. Overall, the book is easy to read and very enjoyable.

Download or read book I Sniper written by Stephen Hunter and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Lee Swagger, former Marine Corps sniper, is back. And this time Swagger's facing an adversary whose trigger finger may be even faster than his own. When four famous 1960s radicals are gunned down, including the wife of an international media mogul, it would appear to be an open-and-shut case. A wealth of evidence ties the chief suspect, retired Marine sniper Carl Hitchcock, to the murders. Holder, until recently, of the record number of kills in Vietnam and anxious to reclaim his title, Hitchcock's subsequent suicide would seem to confirm his guilt. But FBI assistant director Nick Memphis has his doubts – and calls on former Marine Corps sniper Bob Lee Swagger to investigate. As Swagger digs deeper, it becomes clear that matters are more complicated than would initially appear. The shots were not executed with the scope of a 1972 rifle, Hitchcock's weapon of choice, but by a high-tech scope used by active Marines. But as Swagger starts to unravel the tangled web of connections surrounding the murders, he finds his own days may be numbered. Because he's about to face one of his most ruthless adversaries yet – a sniper whose keen intellect and pinpoint accuracy rivals his own. The end result will be a bloody confrontation that only one of them can survive. What people are saying about I, Sniper: ‘Stephen Hunter's I, Sniper brings back one of the great characters in modern thrillerdom, Bob Lee Swagger, everyone's favourite lethal, dour Southerner. I kind of want Swagger to meet up with Lee Child's Jack Reacher one day, in a contest to see who could say the least while doing the most damage.’ Malcolm Gladwell ‘The tension never lets up’ New York Times ‘Stephen Hunter is an Elmore Leonard on steroids’ John Sandford ‘As all Bob Lee fans know, it comes down to 'straight killing time.' And so it does, in a ramped-up, high-tech High Noon finale. As always, Hunter makes it work with precise, detail-rich prose that strips the faux glamour from gun fighting and leaves only the skills of the combatants set against the horrors they wreak.’ Booklist ‘Hunter is back at the top of his game.’ Publisher’s Weekly ‘In his guns-a-poppin' latest, Hunter pits his series hero against a nest of sharp-shooting vipers. Dust off the OK Corral. Even the somewhat squeamish, and even certifiable gun-dummies, may once again find chivalric, heroic Bob Lee just about irresistible.’ Kirkus Reviews ‘Hunter's thrillers are always taut, exciting, and well written, and his latest is no exception. There's also a lot of gun and tech talk as Swagger uses decades' worth of skills to stay a step or three ahead of the baddies. Swagger fans will not be disappointed.’ Library Journal 'Hunter has a unique writing style that thrills and captivates from the opening scene to deliver an exciting whodunit' The Sun ‘Stories of passion, guilt and redemption that jump right off the page and smack the reader clean between the eyes’ Independent on Sunday ‘American hardboiled at its very best, full of taciturn and stoical characters and plotting in explosive overdrive’ The Times ‘Hunter choreographs the violence in steely prose and Swagger ... remains one of crime fiction’s most engaging heroes’ Irish Independent

Book excerpt: As cultural, social, political, and historical objects, guns are rich with complex and contested significance. What guns mean, why they matter, and what policies should be undertaken to regulate guns remain issues of vigorous scholarly and public debate. Gun Studies offers fresh research and original perspectives on the contentious issue of firearms in public life. Comprising global, interdisciplinary contributions, this insightful volume examines difficult and timely questions through the lens of: Social practice Marketing and commerce Critical theory Political conflict Public policy Criminology Questions explored include the evolution of American gun culture from recreation to self-protection; the changing dynamics of the pro-gun and pro-regulation movements; the deeply personal role of guns as sources of both injury and security; and the relationship between gun-wielding individuals, the state, and social order in the United States and abroad. In addition to introducing new research, Gun Studies presents reflections by senior scholars on what has been learned over the decades and how gun-related research has influenced public policy and everyday conversations. Offering provocative and often intimate perspectives on how guns influence individuals, social structures, and the state in both dramatic and nuanced ways, Gun Studies will appeal to students and researchers interested in fields such as sociology, political science, legal history, criminology, criminal justice, social policy, armaments industries, and violent crime. It will also appeal to policy makers and all others interested in and concerned about the use of guns.
