Book A History of Women s Boxing

Download or read book A History of Women s Boxing written by Malissa Smith and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Records of modern female boxing date back to the early eighteenth century in London, and in the 1904 Olympics an exhibition bout between women was held. Yet it was not until the 2012 Olympics—more than 100 years later—that women’s boxing was officially added to the Games. Throughout boxing’s history, women have fought in and out of the ring to gain respect in a sport traditionally considered for men alone. The stories of these women are told for the first time in this comprehensive work dedicated to women’s boxing. A History of Women’s Boxing traces the sport back to the 1700s, through the 2012 Olympic Games, and up to the present. Inside-the-ring action is brought to life through photographs, newspaper clippings, and anecdotes, as are the stories of the women who played important roles outside the ring, from spectators and judges to managers and trainers. This book includes extensive profiles of the sport’s pioneers, including Barbara Buttrick whose plucky carnival shows launched her professional boxing career in the 1950s; sixteen-year-old Dallas Malloy who single-handedly overturned the strictures against female amateur boxing in 1993; the famous “boxing daughters” Laila Ali and Jacqui Frazier-Lyde; and teenager Claressa Shields, the first American woman to win a boxing gold medal at the Olympics. Rich in detail and exhaustively researched, this book illuminates the struggles, obstacles, and successes of the women who fought—and continue to fight—for respect in their sport. A History of Women’s Boxing is a must-read for boxing fans, sports historians, and for those interested in the history of women in sports.

Download or read book Reach written by Leah Hager Cohen and published by Phoenix. This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Any girl who boxes,' writes Leah Hager Cohen, 'challenges, wittingly or not, the idea of what it means to be a girl in our culture. Through the prism of what she does with her fists, she brings a fiercely contrarian light to our most fundamental notions about femininity and power and appetite and shame and desire.'Originally intending simply to research the subject, Leah met four adolescent girls from a Boston housing project who were training under a female coach at the Somerville Boxing Club. In the course of a year, she grew close to them, learning about their families, where they grew up, their explosive friendships and experience of each other as 'intimate adversaries', and especially the damage that had turned each of them into a fighter. Drawn into the ring herself, Leah sparred with the girls and was astounded by the strength and authority of her body. 'I was beginning to get a feel for my own reach.'Spirited and provocative, Without Apology is Leah Cohen's account of what she discovered in that gym about herself, about girls who box, and ultimately about the buried connections between femininity and aggression.

Book Where the Millennials Will Take Us

Download or read book Where the Millennials Will Take Us written by Barbara J. Risman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are today's young adults gender rebels or returning to tradition? In Where the Millennials Will Take Us, Barbara J. Risman reveals the diverse strategies youth use to negotiate the ongoing gender revolution. Using her theory of gender as a social structure, Risman analyzes life history interviews with a diverse set of Millennials to probe how they understand gender and how they might change it. Some are true believers that men and women are essentially different and should be so. Others are innovators, defying stereotypes and rejecting sexist ideologies and organizational practices. Perhaps new to this generation are gender rebels who reject sex categories, often refusing to present their bodies within them and sometimes claiming genderqueer identities. And finally, many youths today are simply confused by all the changes swirling around them. As a new generation contends with unsettled gender norms and expectations, Risman reminds us that gender is much more than an identity; it also shapes expectations in everyday life, and structures the organization of workplaces, politics, and, ideology. To pursue change only in individual lives, Risman argues, risks the opportunity to eradicate both gender inequality and gender as a primary category that organizes social life.

Book Lady Sings the Blues

Download or read book Lady Sings the Blues written by Billie Holiday and published by Crown. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for fans of The United States vs. Billie Holiday, this is the fiercely honest, no-holds-barred memoir of the legendary jazz, swing, and standards singing sensation—a fiftieth-anniversary edition updated with stunning new photos, a revised discography, and an insightful foreword by music writer David Ritz Taking the reader on a fast-moving journey from Billie Holiday’s rough-and-tumble Baltimore childhood (where she ran errands at a whorehouse in exchange for the chance to listen to Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith albums), to her emergence on Harlem’s club scene, to sold-out performances with the Count Basie Orchestra and with Artie Shaw and his band, this revelatory memoir is notable for its trenchant observations on the racism that darkened Billie’s life and the heroin addiction that ended it too soon. We are with her during the mesmerizing debut of “Strange Fruit”; with her as she rubs shoulders with the biggest movie stars and musicians of the day (Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Clark Gable, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and more); and with her through the scrapes with Jim Crow, spats with Sarah Vaughan, ignominious jailings, and tragic decline. All of this is told in Holiday’s tart, streetwise style and hip patois that makes it read as if it were written yesterday.

Book Fighting Sports Gender and the Commodification of Violence

Download or read book Fighting Sports Gender and the Commodification of Violence written by Victoria E. Collins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fighting Sports, Gender and the Commodification of Violence: Heavy Bag Heroines offers a glimpse into the cultural terrain of women's boxing as it manifests in everyday gyms for novice boxers. Taking an ethnographic approach, Victoria Collins examines broad understandings of gender, violence, self-defense, commodification, and health and fitness from the point of view of women who engage in the sport. Collins unpacks dominant assumptions about gender and the sport through the eyes of the women's understandings of gender norms, social assumptions about physicality, sexuality, as well as challenges to masculine and feminine performativity. Central to this study is the appropriation and marketing of the boxers' work out in cardio-boxing gym spaces (i.e. fitness boxing), where the sport has increasingly been packaged, commodified, and sold to predominantly middle class, white female consumers as a means to not only improve their health and fitness, but also as a means to defend themselves against a would-be attacker. The body project for women in the sport of boxing, therefore, should not only be framed as a form of resistance, but one of physical feminism.

Book Jennifer the intimate story of a woman

Download or read book Jennifer the intimate story of a woman written by Rose M. Longsworth and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the intimate story of a woman, who since childhood felt the strong, convincing and sweeping awakening of her feelings, emotions, passions and wants. But as result of a rigorous sexual and religious education, which prevented her from expressing everything she felt with such strength; unable to contain that fire that at her tender age was devouring her, she opted to indulge in her inner world, her mind. There, anything could happen, without inhibitions, without censure, without looks or inquisitorial demands, without reproach or punishment; until she was able to live it in reality. Without a conscious effort, her great inventiveness had prepared and turned her into a girl with great sexual sensibility. A thousand lives would have to be needed in order to live the heated fantasies with the men that passed through her fictitious and real realm; they delighted her, made her feel as if she was the most loved woman, wanted, spoiled, the queen of her lover's heart. and they all had something in common: an uncontrollable passion and constant excitement that maintained interest and sexual appetite skin deep. Always quick at every moment in order to live the most explosive experiences, where pleasure and sensuality sprouted in spurs. How can a woman that grew up with these sorts of dreams, reaches a draw with such rigidity that surrounds her? How is she able to survive and make her life appear as much as possible as her luxurious and happy world? How does she make her heated dreams materialize? Unconsciously, she had prepared to live in reality, which up to now had only occurred in her interior space. It is known, psychologists teach this, that what we think, hope and recreate with an imagination filled with emotion, passion and persistence, tends to materialize. and this is what happened to Jennifer... Life takes incredible turns in the existence of this woman; it presents sharp contrasts and seeming contradictions in her personality. the circumstances that take her through new paths, will take the reader through a surprising plot, where the turns of things will keep the reader in suspense and wanting to know what would come next. What will the end of the story of this interesting, yet ordinary, life of a woman who could have easily been the neighbor you see every day, be?...
