Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rafaella Cruciani presents her first nonfiction work, telling the story of the search for her Italian family roots. A compulsive habit of keeping a notebook and diary made her journey easy to begin, but the facts were as elusive as her ancestors, and after ten years of searching, the story that emerges makes her wish she had begun the process so much earlier. Her forebears were people of substance, strength of character, and dogged determination with a common thread of needing to belong. Rafaella adds her own story to those of her ancestors, perpetuating the seemingly genetic desire to fit in.

Download or read book The Girl That He Marries written by Rhoda Lerman and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel that Gloria Steinem called “the feminist Jekyll-and-Hyde of our time―and we recognize the monster in ourselves while we’re laughing.” Outrageous and outrageously funny, The Girl That He Marries is the story of Stephanie―nearly thirty and still single, a bright and attractive young woman with an unerring instinct for unmarriageable men and a nagging fear she’s going to grow old alone. Enter Richard: urbane, ambitious, and eminently marriageable. The adored son of an adoring mother, Richard has been adroitly manipulating people all his life. He’s especially adroit at the game of love. Before she knows it, Stephanie is hooked on Richard. But before Richard knows it, Stephanie has figured out the rules―and very soon is beating him at his own artful game. In the process, she twists herself into the girl he would marry―and becomes a very different woman. The trouble is, as Stephanie finds out too late, when you play the mating game, you risk getting stuck with the prize. “[A] hilarious romance a la Kafka.” —The New York Times Book Review

Feeling teased and misunderstood, Little Owl and Little Wolf decide to run away from home for good. After straying too far from the path, the pair discovers that they’re lost in the forest and begin to wonder if they’ve made the right decision by leaving the pack. Download or read book Main Street written by Sinclair Lewis and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carol Milford grows up in a mid-sized town in Minnesota before moving to Chicago for college. After her education, during which she’s exposed to big-city life and culture, she moves to Minneapolis to work as a librarian. She soon meets Will Kennicott, a small-town doctor, and the two get married and move to Gopher Prairie, Kennicott’s home town. Carol, inspired by big-city ideas, soon begins chafing at the seeming quaintness and even backwardness of the townsfolk, and their conservative, self-satisfied way of life. She struggles to try to reform the town in her image, while finding meaning in the seeming cultural desert she’s found herself in and in her increasingly cold marriage. Gopher Prairie is a detailed, satirical take on small-town American life, modeled after Sauk Centre, the town in which Lewis himself grew up. The town is fully realized, with generations of inhabitants interacting in a complex web of village society. Its bitingly satirical portrayal made Main Street highly acclaimed by its contemporaries, though many thought the satirical take was perhaps a bit too dark and hopeless. The book’s celebration and condemnation of small town life make it a candidate for the title of the Great American Novel. Main Street was awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, but the decision was overturned by the prize’s Board of Trustees and awarded instead to Edith Wharton for The Age of Innocence. When Lewis went on to win the 1926 Pulitzer for Arrowsmith, he declined it—with the New York Times reporting that he did so because he was still angry at the Pulitzers for being denied the prize for Main Street. Despite the book’s snub at the Pulitzers, Lewis went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, with Main Street being cited as one of the reasons for his win.
Download or read book Devil in Deerskins written by Anahareo and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anahareo (1906-1985) was a Mohawk writer, environmentalist, and activist. She was also the wife of Grey Owl, aka Archie Belaney, the internationally celebrated writer and speaker who claimed to be of Scottish and Apache descent, but whose true ancestry as a white Englishman only became known after his death. Devil in Deerskins is Anahareo’s autobiography up to and including her marriage to Grey Owl. In vivid prose she captures their extensive travels through the bush and their work towards environmental and wildlife protection. Here we see the daily life of an extraordinary Mohawk woman whose independence, intellect and moral conviction had direct influence on Grey Owl’s conversion from trapper to conservationist. Though first published in 1972, Devil in Deerskins’s observations on indigeneity, culture, and land speak directly to contemporary audiences. Devil in Deerskins is the first book in the First Voices, First Texts series. This new edition includes forewords by Anahareo’s daughters, Katherine Swartile and Anne Gaskell, an afterword by Sophie McCall, and reintroduces readers to a very important but largely forgotten text by one of Canada’s most talented Aboriginal writers.
Download or read book Why We Climb written by Chris Noble and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why We Climb is a celebration, in word and image, of those aspects of the climbing life that are most universal, meaningful, and long lasting— the strong connection to partners and nature; the physical and mental mastery required (and how to achieve it); the rewards of exploring oneself and the world through climbing. Through interviews with some of North America’s most notable climbers the book undertakes a quest to find the soul of climbing— asking what compels men and women to dedicate their lives to the challenges and deprivations of living in a vertical world? What are the sacrifices and what are the rewards? And most importantly, can the lessons learned on cliff faces, frozen waterfalls, and alpine peaks— lessons of respect, discipline, commitment, humility and simplicity—be brought home and used to benefit society as a whole?
