Download or read book Everywhere You Don t Belong written by Gabriel Bump and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2020 Winner of the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence “A comically dark coming-of-age story about growing up on the South Side of Chicago, but it’s also social commentary at its finest, woven seamlessly into the work . . . Bump’s meditation on belonging and not belonging, where or with whom, how love is a way home no matter where you are, is handled so beautifully that you don’t know he’s hypnotized you until he’s done.” —Tommy Orange, The New York Times Book Review In this alternately witty and heartbreaking debut novel, Gabriel Bump gives us an unforgettable protagonist, Claude McKay Love. Claude isn’t dangerous or brilliant—he’s an average kid coping with abandonment, violence, riots, failed love, and societal pressures as he steers his way past the signposts of youth: childhood friendships, basketball tryouts, first love, first heartbreak, picking a college, moving away from home. Claude just wants a place where he can fit. As a young black man born on the South Side of Chicago, he is raised by his civil rights–era grandmother, who tries to shape him into a principled actor for change; yet when riots consume his neighborhood, he hesitates to take sides, unwilling to let race define his life. He decides to escape Chicago for another place, to go to college, to find a new identity, to leave the pressure cooker of his hometown behind. But as he discovers, he cannot; there is no safe haven for a young black man in this time and place called America. Percolating with fierceness and originality, attuned to the ironies inherent in our twenty-first-century landscape, Everywhere You Don’t Belong marks the arrival of a brilliant young talent.
Download or read book Baby Bumps written by Nicole Polizzi and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest thing Nicole Polizzi, aka "Snooki," ever did was by accident. But her son, Lorenzo, was never a mistake. When she and her boyfriend, Jionni, found out she was knocked up, they weren't married or engaged. She was only twenty-four and living with her parents -- and she had zero baby experience. With a reckless, party girl TV persona to deal with, she had a lot to learn and discover in becoming a mother. In this funny and frank book, Nicole shares her experiences, everything from the first sonogram to the nipple-cracking shock of breastfeeding. In each chapter, she tells the unvarnished truth about pregnancy symptoms ("The High Price of Gas"), the ridiculousness of her baby registry ("Butt Paste and Boogie Wipes") and the lowdown on postpartum life ("Shit Happens"). There's a ton of useful information, including a list of must-have baby products, MILF style tips, how to keep "I'm a whale" preggers bad body image in check, and how she got into the best shape of her life within six months of giving birth. Although Nicole had to give up partying, she's embracing motherhood the only way she knows how: with a fun-loving attitude -- and lots of leopard print!

While governments around the globe unite to combat this spreading infection, airships of the 1930’s are redesigned and reintroduced to the world. Because of the vessel’s size and its capability to stay airborne for weeks at a time, it is regarded as the next innovation for cruise ship/vacation travel industries, while environmentalists envision it as a solution to the world’s overpopulation problem. The windship proves its worth when the stricken become organized and rise up against the world. It is then; the windship becomes a reckoning force and Earth’s only hope for survival.

Born into a large, working-class family in upstate New York, Christina endured years of abuse before entering the foster care system as a teenager. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down But Not Out: Finding the Strength and Courage to Come Back By: Cameron Triplett Tough times hit us all. When they hit, how do we handle them? Down But Not Out: Finding the Strength and Courage to Come Back is the inspirational true story of Indy wrestler Cameron Valentine (better known to his friends and family as Cameron Triplett) and his miraculous recovery from a broken neck after a match gone wrong. A truly remarkable, faithful man, Cameron explains it best: I can honestly say that I don’t believe in luck. Luck is for Leprechauns. Now, I know that I’m about the same height as one (I stand in at a whoppin’ 5’ 6” tall), but I’m white… not green. So, I can’t tell you that I’m lucky, but I can tell you that I’m very blessed. God has been so good to me, and it’s my sincere prayer that this book portrays just that… HIS GOODNESS! This is a story of hope and encouragement. My neck (C3 and C4) was broken in the ring during a match with Scott Steiner, and it should’ve killed me instantly… at the very least, it should’ve left me paralyzed from the neck down. But my God had other plans. To my readers: I pray you find this book helpful in some way. God bless you! And so, with that in mind, sit back in your favorite chair and read Down But Not Out: Finding the Strength and Courage to Come Back, and be encouraged, inspired, and motivated.

Download or read book Experiments in Skin written by Thuy Linh Nguyen Tu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Experiments in Skin Thuy Linh Nguyen Tu examines the ongoing influence of the Vietnam War on contemporary ideas about race and beauty. Framing skin as the site around which these ideas have been formed, Tu foregrounds the histories of militarism in the production of US biomedical knowledge and commercial cosmetics. She uncovers the efforts of wartime scientists in the US Military Dermatology Research Program to alleviate the environmental and chemical risks to soldiers' skin. These dermatologists sought relief for white soldiers while denying that African American soldiers and Vietnamese civilians were also vulnerable to harm. Their experiments led to the development of pharmaceutical cosmetics, now used by women in Ho Chi Minh City to tend to their skin, and to grapple with the damage caused by the war's lingering toxicity. In showing how the US military laid the foundations for contemporary Vietnamese consumption of cosmetics and practices of beauty, Tu shows how the intersecting histories of militarism, biomedicine, race, and aesthetics become materially and metaphorically visible on skin.
