Download or read book The Character of Jesus written by Charles Edward Jefferson and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1908 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Jesus Christ focuses upon the personal characteristics and traits which He demonstrated to the peoples of ancient Judaea. The author seeks to demystify and clarify the subject, with a rigorous reading of the New Testament lore and other accounts of Jesus. The character of the Son of God was established when He approached others with interest in their life situations, in the words He delivered to them, and the deeds He undertook in life. The author posits that Jesus wanted mankind to arrive at the truth of what God intends for humanity by observing his own personality; He set a thorough example of conduct for all men, of the virtues which believers in the Lord can carry through life. Each quality Christ displays is given its own chapter. The author frequently quotes scripture to help his narration. We discover that Jesus was a candid person; delivering messages with frankness and clarity. He displayed patience, generosity, courage and enthusiasm in his daily life and sermons. Later on the work discusses the connections Jesus had with God; the holiness and reverence for the divinity He displays are significant. Finally the work summarizes the overall greatness of Christ. Charles Edward Jefferson was a clergyman who spent decades preaching in Ohio, writing several books on sermonizing and on various Christian topics.

Download or read book John the Baptist in History and Theology written by Joel Marcus and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis that challenges the conventional Christian hierarchy of John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth While the Christian tradition has subordinated John the Baptist to Jesus of Nazareth, John himself would likely have disagreed with that ranking. In this eye-opening new book, John the Baptist in History and Theology, Joel Marcus makes a powerful case that John saw himself, not Jesus, as the proclaimer and initiator of the kingdom of God and his own ministry as the center of God's saving action in history. Although the Fourth Gospel has the Baptist saying, "He must increase, but I must decrease," Marcus contends that this and other biblical and extrabiblical evidence reveal a continuing competition between the two men that early Christians sought to muffle. Like Jesus, John was an apocalyptic prophet who looked forward to the imminent end of the world and the establishment of God's rule on earth. Originally a member of the Dead Sea Sect, an apocalyptic community within Judaism, John broke with the group over his growing conviction that he himself was Elijah, the end-time prophet who would inaugurate God's kingdom on earth. Through his ministry of baptism, he ushered all who came to him—Jews and non-Jews alike—into this dawning new age. Jesus began his career as a follower of the Baptist, but, like other successor figures in religious history, he parted ways from his predecessor as he became convinced of his own centrality in God's purposes. Meanwhile John's mass following and apocalyptic message became political threats to Herod Antipas, who had John executed to abort any revolutionary movement. Based on close critical-historical readings of early texts—including the accounts of John in the Gospels and in Josephus's Antiquities—as well as parallels from later religious movements, John the Baptist in History and Theology situates the Baptist within Second Temple Judaism and compares him to other apocalyptic thinkers from ancient and modern times. It concludes with thoughtful reflections on how its revisionist interpretations might be incorporated into the Christian faith.
Download or read book Jesus Christ Our Lord written by John F. Walvoord and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 1969-06-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the life and work of Jesus, the apostle John said, "Even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written" (John 21:25). Acknowledging the size of the task, as well as its importance, Dr. John F. Walvoord has written this systematic presentation of the Person and work of Christ from eternity past to eternity future. Beginning with an analysis of modern trends in the study of Christology, Dr. Walvoord shows that "contemporary Christology has in many respects confused rather than clarified the extended revelation of the Word of God." The Word of God forms the solid basis for Dr. Walvoord's entire study. Analyzing the Old Testament, he shows Christ in its history, typology, and prophecy. Then, in the New Testament, he examines the life and work of the incarnate Christ. The doctrines of atonement, redemption, propitiation, and reconciliation are thoroughly and clearly discussed. The book concludes with an examination of the present and future work of Christ, thus giving the reader a comprehensive study of Christology

Download or read book Evidence for the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ Examined through Islamic Law written by Suheil Madanat and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost 1,400 years, Christians have wrestled with appropriate ways to defend their claims to truth in the context of Islam. Dr. Suheil Madanat proposes that the answer lies neither in the antagonization of polemics nor apologetic arguments rooted in Western legal systems, but instead in utilizing the authority of Islamic law itself. While evidence for the resurrection has been legally examined since the seventeenth century, legal apologetics has primarily utilized secular law systems such as Anglo-American common law. In this study, Dr. Madanat tests evidence for the crucifixion and resurrection against Islam’s fixed theocratic law of Sharia. Offering an overview of the evolution and constitution of Islamic law, Dr. Madanat examines how eyewitness testimonies and confessions in the New Testament hold up against Islam’s strict standards for evidence. Authenticating the Gospels using the same standards Islamic scholars use to defend the authenticity of the Qur’an and Sunna, Madanat examines the testimonies of the four evangelists, the confessions of James and Paul, and the circumstantial evidence offered by archeology, church history, and the Christian impact on civilization. This book engages with Islam and its sacred texts seriously and with respect, providing a powerful resource for those interested in apologetics and comparative religion.
Download or read book The Renewal of All Things written by Waldron Byron Scott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universal Salvation is a hotly debated doctrine today among Christians. In The Renewal of All Things Waldron Scott argues that it provides a more relevant and more effective basis for Christian mission in a globalized, pluralistic, and postmodern world than does the contemporary model. "Scott rightly perceives that Christian theology needs to integrate the truths of the biblical metanarrative with the insights of both classical theology and contemporary science in seeking to address the missional issues facing the church today. In this readable book he offers a theologically adventurous and bold attempt to do just that. Even if readers disagree with some of his conclusions, as I myself do, all will find Scott's vision to be both generous and thought-provoking." Gregory MacDonald author of The Evangelical Universalist "Provoctive and insightful The Renewal of All Things will challenge what you think you know about God's plan for salvation and expose His love for us all in graphic detail. Whether you are a biblical scholar or a layperson, whether you believe in Scott's conclusions or not, this book will have you delving deeper into God's word to uncover its truths a fascinating read." Colin P. Watson, Sr. Executive Minister, Madison Avenue Christian Reformed Church President, Christian Reformed World Missions.
