Download or read book Junior High School Mathematics Vol 2 written by George Wentworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics, Vol. 2: Book II This book is intended to meet this demand for the second year of the introductory course. Algebra furnishes the material for the first half of the book, the second half being devoted to those topics of business arith metic which are appropriate to the student's maturity. The work in Book I has already shown the use of the formula in algebra and has furnished a large amount of material to which the formula can now properly be still further related. It is therefore natural to place algebra in the first half year and to make free use of it in the arithmetic that follows, unless the courses are carried along parallel to each other. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics, Vol. 1 A proper curriculum for junior high schools and six-year high schools demands, in the Opinion of many teachers, a course in mathematics which introduces concrete, intuitional geometry and the Simple uses of algebra in the lower classes. This book is intended to meet such a demand for the lowest class. Arithmetic furnishes the material for the first half of the book. The second half of the book is devoted to intuitional and constructive geometry, a subject which is more concrete than algebra and which admits of more simple illustration. Both arithmetic and geometry are arranged' with respect to large topics, the intention being to avoid the lack of system which so often deprives the student of that feeling of mastery which is his right and his privilege. These large topics are set forth clearly in the table of contents. In this book there is gradually introduced the algebraic formula, so that the student is aware of the value of algebra as a working tool before he proceeds to the study of Book II. The text is so arranged that with entire convenience to the teacher and student the work in arithmetic may be taken parallel with the work in geometry, or the work in geometry may precede the work in arithmetic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics Second Course In planning this Second Course in Junior High School Mathematics, the authors have kept the following points in mind: 1. That instruction in mathematics in the eighth school year should continue along the same general lines as in the preceding year. 2. That, from the study of the First Course, the pupil has acquired the following ideas and habits: (a) By checking, the habit of assuming responsibility for the correctness of his results. (b) By estimating his results in advance of the computation, a rational idea of number values. (c) By using the equation in ratios and formulas, some appreciation of its value as a mathematical tool. (d) By measuring and drawing to scale the common geometric figures, some acquaintance with the properties of these figures. (e) By the graphic interpretation and representation of number data, some knowledge of the importance of the graph in science and industry. (f) By emphasizing the idea that percent is a ratio per hundred, a comprehension of the fundamentals of percentage. Book Junior High School Mathematics Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Junior High School Mathematics Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Edson Homer Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics, Vol. 3 The technique of algebra is centered about the trans formation of equations. Frequently these equations are formulas, and the transformation has for its purpose the discovery of another relation among the general numbers involved. Often the equation is derived from a familiar formula, and this furnishes a purpose for its solution. It has been our purpose to develop as much skill in the tech nique of algebraic symbols, the fundamental processes, factoring, etc., as is 'needed to solve the problems that should be given in first-year algebra. To give these pro cesses meaning they are at once used to solve problems. For example, arithmetic progression is taught in connec tion with addition; geometric progression in connection with multiplication; factoring is connected with multipli cation and division. L Factoring is used also to put ex pressions into better form for computation. For instance, the pupil is taught to put the formula, S m ]1rrl, into the more convenient form, S 1rr(r l). While nu usual emphasis is placed upon a high degree of skill in the types of factoring given, those types not needed in the problem situations of elementary algebra or of life have been omitted, as have also the complicated complex fractions. This hook is intended to meet this demand for the second year of the introductory course. The work in algebra is such as every boy, and every girl as well, should become familiar with at this time. It represents that which each will meet in ordinary reading, and although it is not burdened with the technical phraseology of the shop it is utilitarian in the best sense. The formula is needed in reading books and articles of various kinds, the graph is used in many lines of business and study, the equation is helpful in manipulating the formula, and the negative number is so commonly used as to be part of the necessary equipment of every reader of current literature as well as of scientific books. These are, therefore, the features upon which the greatest emphasis is placed in the work of the first half year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Arithmetics: Book Three This book is intended for pupils in Grades VII and VIII. It covers the work as generally taught in a majority of the schools in this country. Most of our elementary schools extend through eight school years, and the topics studied are generally rather uniform. For systems in which the junior high school begins in the seventh grade the Junior High School Mathematics, Books I, II, and III, published in this series, will be found well arranged, but for the more common type of school the work of Grades VII and VIII will for a long time be of the nature herein set forth. For the convenience of teachers the book has been divided into four chapters, each chapter containing sufficient work for a half year. Teachers may omit as many exercises as necessary to allow for carrying out this plan. Indeed, one of the greatest failures on the part of teachers using any textbook is due to the fact that they feel that all exercises must be solved. A. d104book should be the servant of the teacher, not the master, and under each topic the teacher should choose only such exercises and as many of them as are necessary to secure good work on the part of the pupils. Book Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics

Download or read book Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics written by Daniel J. Brahier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics combines the latest developments in research, technology, and standards with a vibrant writing style to help teachers prepare for the excitement and challenges of teaching secondary and middle school mathematics. The book explores the mathematics teaching profession by examining the processes of planning, teaching, and assessing student progress through practical examples and recommendations. Beginning with an examination of what it means to teach and learn mathematics, the reader is led through the essential components of teaching, concluding with an examination of how teachers continue with professional development throughout their careers. Hundreds of citations are used to support the ideas presented in the text, and specific websites and other resources are presented for future study by the reader. Classroom scenarios are presented to engage the reader in thinking through specific challenges that are common in mathematics classrooms. The seventh edition has been updated and expanded with particular emphasis on the latest technology, standards, and other resources. The reader is introduced to the ways that students think and how to best meet their needs through planning that involves attention to differentiation, as well as how to manage a classroom for success. Features include: • Following on from the sixth edition, assessment takes a central role in planning and teaching. Unit 3 (of 5) addresses the use of summative and formative assessments to inform classroom teaching practices. • A new appendix is included that lists websites that can be used in a methods class to view other teachers interacting with students for discussion of effective teaching practices. • The feature entitled “Links and Resources” has been updated in each of the 13 chapters. Five strongly recommended and practical resources are spotlighted at the end of each chapter as an easy reference to some of the most important materials on the topic. • Approximately 150 new citations have either replaced or been added to the text to reflect the latest in research, materials, and resources that support the teaching of mathematics. • Significant revisions have been made to Chapter 12, which now includes updated research and practices as well as a discussion on culturally responsive pedagogy. Likewise, Chapter 8 now includes a description of best and high-leverage teaching practices, and a discussion in Chapter 11 on alternative high school mathematics electives for students has been added. • Chapter 9, on the practical use of classroom technology, has again been revised to reflect the latest tools available to classroom teachers, including apps that can be run on handheld personal devices, in light of changes in education resulting from the global pandemic. An updated Instructor’s Manual features a test bank, sample classroom activities, PowerPoint slide content, chapter summaries, and learning outcomes for each chapter, and can be accessed by instructors online at www.routledge.com/9781032472867.

Book Geometric Exercises for Algebraic Solution

Download or read book Geometric Exercises for Algebraic Solution written by George Williams Myers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geometric Exercises for Algebraic Solution: Second Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools The reasons against the plan in common vogue in secondary schools of breaking the continuity of algebra by dropping it for a whole year after barely starting it, are numerous and strong. Perhaps the only argument that need be cited here is that this procedure creates - and that, too, gratuitously - an educational gap, and that the modern science of education is fundamentally hostile to gaps. Everywhere today interest and continuity in educational procedure are insisted upon. The hiatus here is no less glaring than that between the grades and the first high-school year. The fact that the former is less talked about than the now classical gap means only that fewer students of education are interesting themselves in the virtues of mathematical than of general education. Book Correlated Mathematics for Junior Colleges Classic Reprint

Download or read book Correlated Mathematics for Junior Colleges Classic Reprint written by Ernst Rudolph Breslich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correlated Mathematics for Junior Colleges As in the first three books of the series, the funda mental principle Of the course is to associate closely mathematical topics which are naturally related to each other. This combination makes it possible better to motivate each topic, to show the student more clearly the meaning Of the subject by means of geometrical representation, and to develop in a natural way the important concept of functional correspondence. Such an arrangement Of the material gives unity to a course in which the subject is usually presented as a number Of isolated topics. It has the advantage of arousing and holding the interest of the student, with the result that he gains greater power in less time. The idea of the derivative is presented early and is used in discussing the mpe of the tangent to a curve, and maximum and minimum values of a function. As in the other books of the series, many historical notes have been distributed throughout the books. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Applied Mathematics for Junior High Schools and High Schools

Download or read book Applied Mathematics for Junior High Schools and High Schools written by Eugene Henry Barker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Mathematics for Junior High Schools and High Schools This book has been written to meet the demand for a practical course in applied mathematics which shall coordinate the schoolroom lesson and the actual problem of the industrial and commercial world. It presents the body of mathematical information which is likely to be of daily service, no matter what one's occupation may be. Applied Mathematics is the outgrowth of twelve years of experimentation in a high school of over two thousand students, and the exercises in the book have stood the test of classroom trial. The examples and problems have been selected from many fields - industrial, commercial, mechanical, agricultural - and, as far as possible, are such as occur in the household, on the farm, in the factory, and at the office. The book gives in teachable form: (1) An adequate treatment of the fundamental operations of arithmetic, with proper attention to modern methods of performing these operations. (2) A consideration of ordinary business transactions. (3) A sufficient acquaintance with the symbols of algebra and of algebraic operations to enable the student to interpret and apply simple formulas. (4) Enough geometry to enable him to compute the areas and volumes of the common geometric figures. (5) A study of graphic charts and their use. (6) Training in the use of mathematical tables. (7) Practice in the power to judge a computed result with reference to its reasonableness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
