They have given just such information and suggestive guidance as will enable the student fully to understand and enjoy the masterpiece, without being lost in a mass of irrelevant and dry discussion. They have arranged their material so as to make it possible for the student, if necessary, to pursue his work independently, whether his aim be the preparation for an examination or the furthering of his general culture. Some have been condensed, some have been expanded, and new ones have been added here and there. All references to my editions of other plays have been omitted, their place being supplied by independent notes. Though no radical Changes have been made in the original plan, the present edition is substantially a new book, and many teachers will, I think, prefer it to the old one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedy of Julius Caesar 171, or the dash that I have put at the end of IV. Iii. 5. Other alterations in the generally accepted text, that I have pointed out as possible, but not ventured to introduce into the text of this edition, will be found suggested in the notes on 1. Iii. 65, II. I. 83, ii. 46, iv. 18, III. I. 39, ii. I 18, and IV. Iii. 240. The only passage, as far as I know, to which, without departing from the usual reading, I have given an entirely new interpretation is III. I. I74, I 75. Few notes on the scansion of par ticular lines will be found in the following pages. Shakespeare's metre is a large subject, which requires general treatment with reference to all the plays. The commentary on any individual play would be over burdened, if an attempt were made to examine all the metrical irregularities that occur in it. The notes in this edition are mostly explanatory, and even with this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar The notes appended to these pages will be found few in comparison with the noteworthy points. There are not many lines of Shakespeare that do not furnish occasion for some sort of comment. Teachers will use their discretion as to the time they shall linger over any given matter. A good rule is to dwell upon passages so long as the pupil's interest does not flag. I have found in my own classes that it is possible 'to advance rapidly, even through matter abounding in difficulties, by distributing the items of research among the individuals of a class. The most shaming kind of recitation is that to which each pupil brings his own preparation, unlike that of any other. To such a recitation all listen with eagerness. In my annotation, as often as it seemed feasible, I have referred the student, for light on special points, to other pas sages in the poet's works. The habit of seeking explana tions of Shakespearian difficulties in Shakespeare himself is of the very first importance. It has seemed to me also de sirable to familiarize the learner in this way with the plays at large, even though it be only to such extent as is implied in turning the leaves and searching for passages and words. These references are to the Globe Shakespeare, published by Macmillan Co. As this book has come to be almost universally recognized by Shakespeare scholars as a stand ard for purposes of reference, and is exceedingly cheap, it may be named as the first requisite among collateral helps for the study of the poet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere's Julius Caesar The text of this edition of Julius Caesar is founded on that of the Cambridge Shakspere the very few changes that occur have been made only after due consideration, and are hardly important enough to warrant mention. Those familiar with the various editions of the play will recognise the indebtedness of the present editor for many of. The notes that accompany the text, -an indebt edness herewith acknowledged once and for all. The aim of this edition, as is stated elsewhere, is to help the young student in his first serious reading of a Shaksperian drama. For this student the introduction and the notes were prepared, and for his sake much in formation was included that a riper scholarship would find unnecessary and even tedious. The editor has suc ceeded in his task just so far as he has been able to put himself in the place of an instructor trying to interest the average class of young people in the study of one of Shakspere's best known and best liked plays. Book Shakspere s Tragedy of Julius C sar

Download or read book Shakspere s Tragedy of Julius C sar written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere's Tragedy of Julius Caesar: Edited for School Use The text of this edition of Julius Caesar varies from that of the First Folio only where the latter seems clearly to be corrupt. In the punctuation of the text some approach has been made toward modern usage. The notes and other helps have been prepared with special reference to the requirements for entrance to the larger colleges, but they are not limited by such require ments. Effort has been made, in the Introduction, to give the student something of that sense of acquaintance with Shakspere, as aaman, which gives the true lover of the poet a personal interest in the plays and therefore a readier appreciation of them. The student has been aided, also, to get the poet's points of view. For, as Mr. Dowden observes, even Shakspere could not transcend himself; he had his points of view, not all of which were on Parnassus. One of them was in the audience for which he wrote. Always mindful of the ofi'ice receipts, the playwright habitually looked through the eyes of his Elizabethan playgoer, who, in turn, looked through the atmosphere of the times. It is desirable, therefore, to approach the reading of the play with a fresh sense of the conditions - within the playwright and without - that went to make it what it is.
