Book excerpt: A witty philosophical murder mystery with a charming twist: the crack detectives are sheep determined to discover who killed their beloved shepherd. On a hillside near the cozy Irish village of Glennkill, a flock of sheep gathers around their shepherd, George, whose body lies pinned to the ground with a spade. George has cared devotedly for the flock, even reading them books every night. Led by Miss Maple, the smartest sheep in Glennkill (and possibly the world), they set out to find George’s killer. The A-team of investigators includes Othello, the “bad-boy” black ram; Mopple the Whale, a Merino who eats a lot and remembers everything; and Zora, a pensive black-faced ewe with a weakness for abysses. Joined by other members of the richly talented flock, they engage in nightlong discussions about the crime, wild metaphysical speculations, and embark on reconnaissance missions into the village, where they encounter some likely suspects. Along the way, the sheep confront their own all-too-human struggles with guilt, misdeeds, and unrequited love. Funny, fresh, and endearing, it introduces a wonderful new breed of detectives to Canadian readers.

Book Greek Prose Composition Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep Management: A Handbook for the Shepherd and Student There are several books on sheep husbandry written by good authorities on the subject which have been of great aid to flockmasters. However, there is need for a book written in simple, compre hensible: every-day language dealing with the practical problems of sheep husbandry. This book has been prepared not only to serve the shepherd in his every-day work, but also to meet the require ments of the student in the classroom. Numerous inquiries from flocko'wners from many sections'of the country for information rela tive to sheep husbandry and the troubles connected with the industry, the requests of many friends and students, and especially the urgent requests of Dean Henry and later of Dean Russell, both of the College of Agriculture of the University of vviscon sin, have induced the author to prepare this book. Judging from many letters recei'ved, not only the beginners with sheep, but also some of the more experienced men, often have many difficulties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep: Domestic Breeds and Their Treatment Early in the present century, when interest in the breeding of live stock became more general than it had previously been, the demand for information on the subject was supplied by Messrs. David Low, Wm. Youatt, W. C. L. Martin, and others. The works of Low and Youatt were large and expensive; those of Martin were cheap and popular. Martin's little books passed through many editions, and, from time to time, were revised and modernised. They form the foundation of the present "Popular Live Stock Series"; but in 1893 they were so thoroughly overhauled that very little of the writing of the original author remains. Consequently his name has not been retained on the title page of "Cattle" and "Sheep," as the books have been rendered practically new. They are now published in the belief that, in view of the increased importance of live stock in the farm economy of the United Kingdom, they will be helpful in instructing beginners as to the characteristics and capabilities of the various improved breeds and in giving plain hints as to management and diseases; while they will also serve as introductions to the more extended studies of the subject that are to be found in the "Live Stock Hand Books," brought out by the same publishers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sheep and the Goats She looked in the cool, Shaded drawing-room for a figure which had been wont, of late, to take large possession of that pleasant place, seizing upon its easiest chair, lopping over either end Of its sofa, squatting, with the grace inseparable from its long, limber proportions, on the floor, if that position happened to commend itself. Now the room was empty. SO was the wide garden, through which she searched in vain for the form which SO frequently basked on its sunny lawns, and haunted its shady nooks.
