Book The Mathematics of the Calendar

Download or read book The Mathematics of the Calendar written by Marc Cohn and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-07-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will explain the mathematical details behind the Jewish calendar and Easter calculation with a mathematical proposal to fix the Jewish Calendar from an actuary. In addition, we will explore the mathematics behind the Mayan calendar, Islamic calendar, and our everyday calendar, the Gregorian calendar. First, I will demonstrate how the Jewish calendar works, and how to convert dates between the Jewish calendar to the Gregorian/Julian calendar. I will then explain the Easter calculation and demonstrate how to use the methods from the Easter calculation to fix the Jewish calendar so that the Jewish calendar stays consistent with the solar cycle. In 1582, there were two competing proposals to reform the Julian calendar. I will explain the mathematics behind the two proposals. I will explain the proposal that placed Washington, DC on the 77th meridian.

Download or read book Calendar and Community written by Sacha Stern and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calendar and Community traces the development of the Jewish calendar from its origins until it reached, in the tenth century CE, its present form. Drawing on a wide range of often neglected sources - literary, documentary, epigraphic, Jewish, Graeco-Roman and Christian - it is the first comprehensive work to have been written on the subject. It will be useful not only to historians and epigraphists for the interpretation of early Jewish datings, but also as a historical study of early Judaism in its own right. Its main theme is that the Jewish calendar evolved in the course of this period from considerable diversity (with a variety of solar and lunar calendars) to unity (with the normative rabbinic calendar). The unification of the calendar was one element in the unification of Jewish identity in later antiquity and the earlymedieval world.

Book Encyclopedia of Sciences and Religions

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Sciences and Religions written by Anne Runehov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To all who love the God with a 1000 names and respect science” In the last quarter century, the academic field of Science and Theology (Religion) has attracted scholars from a wide variety of disciplines. The question is, which disciplines are attracted and what do these disciplines have to contribute to the debate? In order to answer this question, the encyclopedia maps the (self)-identified disciplines and religious traditions that participate or might come to participate in the Science and Religion debate. This is done by letting each representative of a discipline and tradition answer specific chosen questions. They also need to identify the discipline in relation to the Science and Religion debate. Understandably representatives of several disciplines and traditions answered in the negative to this question. Nevertheless, they can still be important for the debate; indeed, scholars and scientists who work in the field of Science and Theology (Religion) may need knowledge beyond their own specific discipline. Therefore the encyclopedia also includes what are called general entries. Such entries may explain specific theories, methods, and topics. The general aim is to provide a starting point for new lines of inquiry. It is an invitation for fresh perspectives on the possibilities for engagement between and across sciences (again which includes the social and human sciences) and religions and theology. This encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference work for scholars interested in the topic of ‘Science and Religion.’ It covers the widest spectrum possible of academic disciplines and religious traditions worldwide, with the intent of laying bare similarities and differences that naturally emerge within and across disciplines and religions today. The A–Z format throughout affords easy and user-friendly access to relevant information. Additionally, a systematic question-answer format across all Sciences and Religions entries affords efficient identification of specific points of agreement, conflict, and disinterest across and between sciences and religions. The extensive cross-referencing between key words, phrases, and technical language used in the entries facilitates easy searches. We trust that all of the entries have something of value for any interested reader. Anne L.C. Runehov and Lluis Oviedo

Book A Deep Dive Into the Jewish Calendar for the Mathematically Challenged

Download or read book A Deep Dive Into the Jewish Calendar for the Mathematically Challenged written by Fred Reiss and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-05 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern Jewish calendar is a calculated calendar because its foundation is mathematical rather than observational, as was the case until the mid-fourth century CE. The calendar's mathematics is really not difficult, the operations are just addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. However, arriving at a single answer can require dozens, if not scores of calculations, and making even a single mistake might demand repetition of all computations. The tediousness of the process is emphasized by a single quote in the Talmud: "R. Ada ... declared: 'When we were engaged in fixing a leap year at Yabne [Yavne], we did not quit (our work) either for Shema or for prayer.'"Although all calendar systems have varying degrees of errors, they are generally easy to construct and maintain, but not the Jewish calendar. The rabbinic-postponement rules, among others, make the Jewish calendar the world's most sophisticated and complex calendar. For example, certain days of the week at the start of the New Year cannot follow each other; certain types of years, which can have any one of six different lengths, are unable to follow each other; and the calendar's 61 unique nineteen-year cycles lack any obvious patterns of appearing, disappearing, and reappearing, making a perpetual Jewish calendar elusive. This work is based on the author's previous book, The Jewish Calendar: History and Inner Workings, a full mathematical treatment of the subject. A Deep Dive into the Jewish Calendar for the Mathematically Challenged also abounds with numbers, but does not ask readers to perform arithmetic calculations to arrive at conclusions; rather it illuminates the rules and corollaries supporting the calendar, and decodes calendar facts through comprehensive explanations and relevant examples presented my means of tables, figures, and graphs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the introduction to 'Romance of the Hebrew Calendar,' author Raphael Ben Levi writes, "This book is about relationships, I make no apologies for it. When everything has been said and done, what are we left with that endures? Relationships, borne out of agape love. This is what the deepest and most authentic relationships are composed of from beginning to end." This absorbing and ground breaking book will inspire readers to develop a deeper relationship with God, and bring restoration to those who are spiritually broken. According to the author, there is a special heartbeat that pulsates through the veins of the biblical year which has helped shape the identity of the Jewish people. Written from a Jewish messianic perspective, 'Romance of the Hebrew Calendar' contains inspirational and fresh insights that are highly engaging and provocative. The main theme is complemented by a rich compendium of poignant stories and devotions drawn from Jewish tradition, historical archives and firsthand accounts. The Jewish festivals are lovingly presented to demonstrate a unified message of redemption. The months of the Hebrew calendar are accompanied by individual sections relating to the constellation connected to each tribe as represented by their banner or flag. The Hebrew word 'mazal,' from the plural word 'mazzaroth' is associated with the patterns of stars in the sky, and we find various biblical references to it such as in the Book of Job. In addition, 'Romance of the Hebrew Calendar,' contains individual sections for each chapter relating to the jewels of the high priest's ephod, their colours and their inherent connection with the twelve tribes of Israel. The combined messages contained within the biblical feasts, the mazzaroth and the jewels of the high priest's ephod, converge to form a unified declaration of God's love, revealed in Yeshua Ha Meshiach that will capture your imagination and attention. This book is beautifully written, easy to read and contains many insights and revelations that are interwoven and presented to make it a treasure to adorn every bookshelf.

Book Zodiac Calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Their Reception

Download or read book Zodiac Calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Their Reception written by Helen R. Jacobus and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient mathematical basis of the Aramaic calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls is analysed in this investigation. Helen R. Jacobus re-examines an Aramaic zodiac calendar with a thunder divination text (4Q318) and the calendar from the Aramaic Astronomical Book (4Q208 - 4Q209), all from Qumran. Jacobus demonstrates that 4Q318 is an ancestor of the Jewish calendar today and that it helps us to understand 4Q208 - 4Q209. She argues that these calendars were taught in antiquity as angelic knowledge described in 1 Enoch and the Book of Jubilees. The study also encompasses Babylonian, Hellenistic, Byzantine astronomy and astrology, and classical and Jewish writings. Finally, a medieval Hebrew zodiac calendar related to 4Q318 with an astrological text is published here for the first time.
