Book Life Story of Rasmus B Anderson

Download or read book Life Story of Rasmus B Anderson written by Rasmus Bjørn Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1915 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rasmus Anderson (1846-1936), the American author, scholar, editor, businessman and diplomat, intertwines his life story with the cultural and institutional history of the Norwegian-American community as a whole. There are eyewitness accounts of tension within American factions and branches of the Lutheran church over such issues as slavery and public education as well as anecdotes about Ole Bull, Knut Hamsun, Björnstjerne Björnson, Robert La Follette, James G. Blaine and various European monarchs and heads of state. Anderson began his life on a farm in Albion, Dane County, Wisconsin. After many efforts to finance and obtain the kind of education he wanted, he pioneered the study and teaching of Scandinavian languages at the University of Wisconsin (1869-1883). Between 1885 and 1889, he served as U.S. minister to Denmark. He eventually prospered as president of the Wisconsin Life Insurance Co., from 1895-1922. In 1874, Anderson attracted widespread attention with his America Not Discovered By Columbus. He is remembered for his studies, translations, and retellings of Norse mythology. The more active and public aspects of his life are emphasized in this work.

Book Americanism Versus Bolshevism

Download or read book Americanism Versus Bolshevism written by Ole Hanson and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1920 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ole Hanson served as Seattle's mayor at a pivotal time: communists infiltrated the city's labour unions, and within months staged a general strike and revolution - this is Hanson's personal account of defeating the uprising. Buoyed by the success of the 1917 Revolution in Russia, ambitious communists hoped that a revolutionary chain reaction would ensue across the world, including in the United States. The prosperous port city of Seattle, with its sizable dock and industry, became a flashpoint in the movement. The city's labour unions were infiltrated and radicalized by communists, who hatched a plot to overthrow the local government through crippling strike action. The attempt was only thwarted by city hall's total refusal to grant any concession, backed by thousands of American soldiers. The author goes on to discuss the history of communist movements, and how they arose in countries with mass poverty coupled with abysmal government. He constructively suggests many measures that the US can take to guard against future actions by communists; for example the control of rising living costs and the dollar's inflation, sustained investment in education and increases to teachers' pay, plus fighting corruption in certain industries.

Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: ...ur tickets and seen to the baggage we entered a car in the women's division and waited impatiently for the train to start. At last the first signal was given, then the second and third; the locomotive shrieked and puffed, the train moved slowly, then swiftly it left the depot far behind it.From Vilna to our next stopping place, Verzbolovo, there was a long, tedious ride of about eight hours. As the day continued to be dull and foggy, very little could be seen through the windows. Besides, no one seemed to care or to be interested in anything. Sleepy and tired as we all were, we got little rest, except the younger ones, for we had not yet got used to living in the cars and could not make ourselves very comfortable. For the greater part of the time we remained as unsocial as the weather was unpleasant. The car was very still, there being few passengers, among them a very pleasant kind gentleman travelling with his pretty daughter. Mother found them very pleasant to chat with, and we children found it le..

Book History of the Huguenot Emigration to America

Download or read book History of the Huguenot Emigration to America written by Charles W. Baird and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively-researched two-volume series offers a detailed account of "the coming of the persecuted Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces [New England] now comprehended within the United States....The volumes now submitted to the public treat first of these antecedent movements, and then take up the narrative of the events that led to the more considerable and more effective emigration, in the latter years of the seventeenth century." This very readable narrative history is rich with details about persons, places and events. Much of the information preserved on these pages was gleaned from unpublished documents found in the United States, France and England: "Manuscripts in the possession of the descendants of refugees; memorials, petitions, wills, and other papers on file in public offices;" as well as numerous church records and other original documents. Volume I includes: Attempted Settlements in Brazil and Florida, Under the Edict: Acadia and Canada, New Netherland, The Antilles, Approach of the Revocation, and The Revocation: Flight from La Rochelle and Aunis. Illustrations, maps, and an appendix enhance the text. An index to full-names, places and subjects for both volumes is contained in Volume II.
