Book excerpt: “A celebration of African American cuisine right now, in all of its abundance and variety.”—Tejal Rao, The New York Times JAMES BEARD AWARD WINNER • IACP AWARD WINNER • IACP BOOK OF THE YEAR • TONI TIPTON-MARTIN NAMED THE 2021 JULIA CHILD AWARD RECIPIENT NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • The New Yorker • NPR • Chicago Tribune • The Atlantic • BuzzFeed • Food52 Throughout her career, Toni Tipton-Martin has shed new light on the history, breadth, and depth of African American cuisine. She’s introduced us to black cooks, some long forgotten, who established much of what’s considered to be our national cuisine. After all, if Thomas Jefferson introduced French haute cuisine to this country, who do you think actually cooked it? In Jubilee, Tipton-Martin brings these masters into our kitchens. Through recipes and stories, we cook along with these pioneering figures, from enslaved chefs to middle- and upper-class writers and entrepreneurs. With more than 100 recipes, from classics such as Sweet Potato Biscuits, Seafood Gumbo, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, and Pecan Pie with Bourbon to lesser-known but even more decadent dishes like Bourbon & Apple Hot Toddies, Spoon Bread, and Baked Ham Glazed with Champagne, Jubilee presents techniques, ingredients, and dishes that show the roots of African American cooking—deeply beautiful, culturally diverse, fit for celebration. Praise for Jubilee “There are precious few feelings as nice as one that comes from falling in love with a cookbook. . . . New techniques, new flavors, new narratives—everything so thrilling you want to make the recipes over and over again . . . this has been my experience with Toni Tipton-Martin’s Jubilee.”—Sam Sifton, The New York Times “Despite their deep roots, the recipes—even the oldest ones—feel fresh and modern, a testament to the essentiality of African-American gastronomy to all of American cuisine.”—The New Yorker “Jubilee is part-essential history lesson, part-brilliantly researched culinary artifact, and wholly functional, not to mention deeply delicious.”—Kitchn “Tipton-Martin has given us the gift of a clear view of the generosity of the black hands that have flavored and shaped American cuisine for over two centuries.”—Taste

Book The Jubilee Principle

Download or read book The Jubilee Principle written by Dan L. White and published by WND Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the world mired in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, people are desperate for answers. But while politicians and investment gurus are stymied to find answers, author Dan L. White turns to the God of the Bible for wisdom to light the way in today's dark times. In The Jubilee Principle: God's Plan For Economic Freedom, White describes the connection between the Bible and the marketplace. White, an expert on Christian stewardship and founder of the Homeschool Helpers ministry, delves into Old Testament history and shows how God's relationship with the Israelites is a model that can offer spiritual and economic liberation for Christians today. As White examines the economic long wave-a boom-and-bust cycle that happens roughly twice a century in free economies-he uncovers the wisdom of the fifty year Jubilee cycle in the Hebrews' economy. Simply put, this was God's plan to spare Israel of the tumult of financial crises, and we can still learn something valuable from His timeless wisdom today.

Download or read book The Jubilee Bible written by Russell M. Stendal and published by Ransom Press International. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 3658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated from the Original Texts in Hebrew and Greek into Spanish by Casiodoro de Reina (1569) and compared with the revision of Cipriano de Valera (1602). Based on the New Testament of Francisco de Enzinas (1543) and on the New Testament (1556) with the Psalms (1557) of Juan Pérez de Pineda. This material was translated from Spanish into English by Russell M. Stendal and compared with the Old English Translation of William Tyndale (Pentateuch of 1530, Ploughboy Edition New Testament of 1534, Joshua to 2 Chronicles of 1537, and Jonah). It was also compared word for word with the Authorized Version (by King James) of 1611. The word of our God shall stand for ever. (Isaiah 40:8) Why this Version? The Jubilee Bible (JUB) stands apart from most other English versions in print since the beginning of the last century. The usage and context tend to define each key word so you do not have to blindly rely on theological dictionaries or reference materials that may wittingly or unwittingly include any type of prejudice or bias. Careful attention in properly and consistently translating each key word, through the first usage and on through to the last occurrence, was made to avoid the use of synonyms. Then, as the word makes its way across the Old Testament and you make the correct match with the corresponding Greek word in the New Testament, an amazing pattern emerges. The Jubilee Bible is the only translation we know of that has made a serious attempt to mate each unique Hebrew word (and subsequently its Greek equivalent) with a unique English word (using the common English of William Tyndale and the extraordinary Hebrew scholarship of Casiodoro de Reina of the early Reformation) so that the use (and number of occurrences of each key word) sets forth the idea of what God means by each word as defined by the actual context in Scripture.

Book The Jubilee from Leviticus to Qumran

Download or read book The Jubilee from Leviticus to Qumran written by John Bergsma and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-03-31 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The observation of the Jubilee Year 2000 by many Christian groups worldwide generated renewed interest in the theological, historical, and socio-economic aspects of the biblical jubilee. This book begins with an analysis of the historical origins of the jubilee institution in ancient Israel, and then traces the reinterpretation of the jubilee and the text of Leviticus 25 through the Old Testament, the Second Temple literature, and the Qumran documents. It demonstrates that, with the passage of time, the socio-economic implementation of the jubilee is increasingly de-emphasized in favor of an eschatological interpretation, in which the jubilee itself functions as a type of the final age, and cycles of jubilee years are employed to calculate when this age will arrive.

Book excerpt: In keeping with the bestselling When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple, and Gail Sheehy's New Passages, Jubilee Time celebrates the freedom, opportunities, and power of older women, who are too often maligned in our youth-obsessed culture. Based on the Jubilee passage in Leviticus--"You shall hallow the fiftieth year. It shall be a Jubilee for you"--this practical and philosophical book helps women assess what values and beliefs they want to carry forward into the second half of life. A Jubilarian herself, Harris draws on her own experience and cites others--including May Sarton, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, M.F.K. Fisher, Florida Scott-Maxwell, Doris Grumbach, as well as more than one hundred "ordinary" women--to reflect the variety and vitality of this unheralded community. In lyrical prose punctuated by exercises and meditations, she invites readers to rest and reflect, stop and take stock, celebrate and cultivate the rich rewards of a mature spirituality.

Book excerpt: "Lis Hartel became paralyzed after contracting polio in 1944. Her dreams of riding horses and competing in the sport of dressage were shattered. After months in the hospital, doctors told her she'd never ride again. Lis tried anyway. How do you stay on a horse without using your legs? How do you give the subtle cues needed in dressage with limited mobility? With hard work--and an unlikely horse named Jubilee. After years of training together and creating a new way of communicating, Lis and Jubilee danced into the competition ring, and eventually all the way to the Olympics. Lis Hartel was the first woman with a disability ever to win an Olympic medal, and the first woman to stand equally beside men on the Olympic winners' podium in any sport."--

Book Land Tenure and the Biblical Jubilee

Download or read book Land Tenure and the Biblical Jubilee written by Jeffrey A. Fager and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biblical jubilee represents one of the most radical programmes for land reform from the ancient Near East, yet it was never practised in ancient Israel. What then is the meaning of this sacred law that was never enforced? This cogently argued book attempts to answer that question by using the tools of sociological analysis. Fager examines three levels of meaning within the jubilee legislation, which was produced by the priestly intellectuals during the period of exile. The actual words of the text carry one meaning and the priests intended a slightly different meaning, but underlying both was a moral world view that guided them. The laws of the biblical jubilee thus enable us to examine the deepest level of the ancient Israelites' understanding of land and justice.

She was instructed by the Holy Spirit to "Write a book about your revelation of Leviticus 25." This book is no doubt a revelation. It offers different biblical metaphors of jubilee. This author, Becky Adedokun, demonstrates an awareness of the many aspects of Jubilee. Without a doubt, her testimony of faith impinges on her personal experience of Jubilee as a significant milestone, having reflected on her life's journey through forty-nine years. To this end, a celebration of her emancipated life from incapacitating challenges of life is a worthy venture. In this book, readers will find reasons to live daily life of jubilee rather than only when one reaches the age fifty. This book will help you ignite a passion to stand tall in the life of victory which is yours in union with Christ.
