Book Contemporary Art and Feminism

Download or read book Contemporary Art and Feminism written by Jacqueline Millner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book examines contemporary art while foregrounding the key role feminism has played in enabling current modes of artmaking, spectatorship and theoretical discourse. Contemporary Art and Feminism carefully outlines the links between feminist theory and practice of the past four decades of contemporary art and offers a radical re-reading of the contemporary movement. Rather than focus on filling in the gaps of accepted histories by ‘adding’ the ‘missing’ female, queer, First Nations and women artists of colour, the authors seek to revise broader understandings of contemporary practice by providing case studies contextualised in a robust art historical and theoretical basis. Readers are encouraged to see where art ideas come from and evaluate past and present art strategies. What strategies, materials or tropes are less relevant in today’s networked, event-driven art economies? What strategies and themes should we keep hold of, or develop in new ways? This is a significant and innovative intervention that is ideal for students in courses on contemporary art within fine arts, visual studies, history of art, gender studies and queer studies.

Book Narelle Jubelin

Download or read book Narelle Jubelin written by Ann Stephen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalogue accompanying Cannibal Tours, an exhibition of the work of Madrid-based Australian artist Narelle Jubelin, presented at Heide Museum in 2009. Jubelin's work is concerned with the interdisciplinary themes within modernist art, architecture and popular culture. Her installations typically comprise readymade objects, her own petit-point renditions and images by other artists. They signal a desire for a cross-generational conversation, through narratives of travel, exile and displacement.

Book Narelle Jubelin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Narelle Jubelin
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 64 pages

Download or read book Narelle Jubelin written by Narelle Jubelin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This challenging and beautiful installation is matched only by its catalogue, which documents this Australian artist's United States museum debut. Like the installation for which it was titled, Soft Shoulder engages the reader in a game of complex object associations. At the center of all Jubelin's work is the inter-relatedness of people and places as they occur by way of fate, coincidence or deliberate migration and exchange. Jubelin links Chicago and Australia through a cast of characters including Walter Burley Griffith and Marion Mahoney Griffith, Anaïs Nin, Frank Lloyd Wright and Jane Addams. In her close reading of Jubelin's methodology, Juliana Engberg gives background and insight into the life of objects. Lewis and Jacob's expertly executed text offers a glossary of objects, people, quotations and ideologies-all cross referenced-not so much to explain the installation, as to open a series of related experiences. Published in conjunction with Grey Art Gallery and Study Center, New York University 1994.

Book Bound to Appear

  • Author : Huey Copeland

  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Bound to Appear written by Huey Copeland and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the close of the twentieth century, black artists began to figure prominently in the mainstream American art world for the first time. Thanks to the social advances of the civil rights movement and the rise of multiculturalism, African American artists in the late 1980s and early ’90s enjoyed unprecedented access to established institutions of publicity and display. Yet in this moment of ostensible freedom, black cultural practitioners found themselves turning to the history of slavery. Bound to Appear focuses on four of these artists—Renée Green, Glenn Ligon, Lorna Simpson, and Fred Wilson—who have dominated and shaped the field of American art over the past two decades through large-scale installations that radically departed from prior conventions for representing the enslaved. Huey Copeland shows that their projects draw on strategies associated with minimalism, conceptualism, and institutional critique to position the slave as a vexed figure—both subject and object, property and person. They also engage the visual logic of race in modernity and the challenges negotiated by black subjects in the present. As such, Copeland argues, their work reframes strategies of representation and rethinks how blackness might be imagined and felt long after the end of the “peculiar institution.” The first book to examine in depth these artists’ engagements with slavery, Bound to Appear will leave an indelible mark on modern and contemporary art.

Book Spaces of Care Confronting Colonial Afterlives in European Ethnographic Museums

Download or read book Spaces of Care Confronting Colonial Afterlives in European Ethnographic Museums written by Wayne Modest and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alarming environmental shifts and disasters have raised public awareness and anxieties regarding the future of the planet. While planetary in scale, the negative effects of this global crisis are distributed unequally, affecting some of the already most fragile communities most intensely, thus contributing to rising global inequality. The pairing of environmental crises and a sense of inadequacy facing hitherto celebrated models of citizenry informs a current spirit of the times. The contributors to this volume place ethnographic or world cultures museums at the centre of these debates - these museums have been embroiled in longstanding debates about their histories, collections, and practices in relation to the colonial past.

Book Chicago Makes Modern

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Jane Jacob
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2012-12-15
  • ISBN : 0226389588
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Chicago Makes Modern written by Mary Jane Jacob and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago is a city dedicated to the modern—from the skyscrapers that punctuate its skyline to the spirited style that inflects many of its dwellings and institutions, from the New Bauhaus to Hull-House. Despite this, the city has long been overlooked as a locus for modernism in the arts, its rich tradition of architecture, design, and education disregarded. Still the modern in Chicago continues to thrive, as new generations of artists incorporate its legacy into fresh visions for the future. Chicago Makes Modern boldly remaps twentieth-century modernism from our new-century perspective by asking an imperative question: How did the modern mind—deeply reflective, yet simultaneously directed—help to dramatically alter our perspectives on the world and make it new? Returning the city to its rightful position at the heart of a multidimensional movement that changed the face of the twentieth century, Chicago Makes Modern applies the missions of a brilliant group of innovators to our own time. From the radical social and artistic perspectives implemented by Jane Addams, John Dewey, and Buckminster Fuller to the avant-garde designs of László Moholy-Nagy and Mies van der Rohe, the prodigious offerings of Chicago's modern minds left an indelible legacy for future generations. Staging the city as a laboratory for some of our most heralded cultural experiments, Chicago Makes Modern reimagines the modern as a space of self-realization and social progress—where individual visions triggered profound change. Featuring contributions from an acclaimed roster of contemporary artists, critics, and scholars, this book demonstrates how and why the Windy City continues to drive the modern world.
