Book excerpt: In Japan, ju-on is a deadly curse that takes on a life of its own. Always seeking new victims, it's a grudge that doesn't stop-it can't be stopped. Anyone unfortunate enough to meet up with a ghost killed by the grudge is then killed-and so it spreads. When a senior citizen outreach volunteer goes to work in a house in a quiet residential area, she soon starts to hear odd noises. As the strange events get more and more ominous, she discovers that some acts of violence can attach themselves to a house and that some evils can reach out and touch you-even after death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takashi Shimizu's Ju-on franchise was a principal instigator in the rise of contemporary Japanese horror and its international popularity at the turn of the millennium. Following the success of Hideo Nakata's Ringu (1998), the first cinematic release of Ju-on: The Grudge in 2002 crystallized Japanese horror's rise to prominence and outlined the new decade's thematic interest in supernatural technology and fear of contagions, while skillfully navigating domestic social concerns, such as Japan's growing elderly population and domestic violence. This Devil's Advocate explores the production roots of Ju-on The Grudge, followed by a critical reading of the film that highlights its essential themes and motifs, in addition to a section on cultural influences, before concluding with a section on Shimizu's continued involvement with the Ju-on franchise and its ongoing legacy. The book serves as an excellent primer for readers without prior knowledge of Japanese horror or the Ju-on film cycle, while providing fresh perspectives on the film that makes it equally appealing to J-horror aficionados.

Download or read book The Game of Ju Jitsu written by Taro Miyake and published by Budoworks. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1906, "The Game of Ju-Jitsu" is an accomplished work by two of the great Judoka of all time. In simple, precise, and declarative descriptions, the key elements of Ju-Jitsu are explained as well as the many improper applications (Faults), that can take place in a common match. Along with over 90 illustrations and photographs many current techniques as well as techniques no longer used in traditional Judo matches are covered. Falling exercises, Standing work, Simple and Advanced Throws, Groundwork, Hold-downs, and a variety of Locking techniques are covered. Both of the authors (Taro(Taruji) Miyake & Yukio Tani) were early proponents of teaching Jujutsu techniques to Western students. Miyaki started his training under Fusen-ryu Jujutsu ground-fighting Newaza master Mataemon Tanabe, as well as Osaka master Yataro Handa and is credited for helping establish Judo in the United Kingdom at the start of the 20th century. Miyake toured through spectacles and music halls, defeating many of the best wrestlers of the time and engaging in open all-comers challenge matches. Tani was a pioneering Japanese Jujutsu and Judo instructor and professional challenge wrestler, notable for being one of the very first Jujutsu stylists to teach and compete outside of Japan. On stage Tani was known as the "pocket Hercules" and was famous throughout all levels of London society. In 1904, Tani and Miyake opened the Japanese School of Jujutsu that was located at 305, Oxford Street W, London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air war over the Steppes was more than a brutal clash in which might alone triumphed. It was a conflict that saw tactical and technological innovation as the Soviet air force faced off against Herman Göring's Luftwaffe. As Germany and the Soviet Union battled for victory on the Eastern Front they had to overcome significant strategic and industrial problems, as well as fighting against the extreme weather conditions of the East. These factors combined with the huge array of aircraft used on the Eastern Front to create one of the most compelling conflicts of the war. Told primarily from the strategic and command perspective, this account offers a detailed analysis of this oft-overlooked air war, tracing the clashes between Germany and the Soviet Union over the course of World War II. Historical photographs complement the examination as author E. R. Hooton explores these epic aerial battles between the Third Reich and the Soviet Union.
