Book A Simple High Performance Thomson Scattering Diagnostic for High Temperature Plasma Research

Download or read book A Simple High Performance Thomson Scattering Diagnostic for High Temperature Plasma Research written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Thomson scattering diagnostic is used to measure the electron temperature and density of the plasma in the MST reversed-field pinch, a magnetic confinement fusion research device. This diagnostic system is unique for its type in that it combines high performance with simple design and low cost components. In the design of this instrument, careful attention was given to the suppression of stray laser line light with simple and effective beam dumps, viewing dumps, aperatures, and a holographic edge filter. This allows the use of a single grating monochromator for dispersion of the Thomson scattered spectrum onto the microchannel plate detector. Alignment and calibration procedures for the laser beam delivery system, the scattered light collection system, and the spectrometer and detector are described. A sample Thomson scattered spectrum illustrates typical data.

Book Mechanism Design of the Thomson Scattering Diagnostic System for the TMX East Mirror Plug

Download or read book Mechanism Design of the Thomson Scattering Diagnostic System for the TMX East Mirror Plug written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Thomson scattering diagnostic system is used to measure the electron temperature and density of the east mirror plug of the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The measurements are made by firing a high-power ruby laser pulse through the plasma where the electrons then re-radiate a small fraction of the light. Because of the velocity of the electrons, the wavelength of the re-radiated light is Doppler shifted. The width of the Doppler-shifted wavelength spectrum is a measure of the temperature of the electrons in the plasma, and the total amount of re-radiated light is proportional to the electron density.

Book Multipoint Thomson Scattering System and Measurements on the Los Alamos Spheromak Compact Toroid Experiment

Download or read book Multipoint Thomson Scattering System and Measurements on the Los Alamos Spheromak Compact Toroid Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multipoint Thomson scattering system providing radial electron temperature and density profiles of plasma in a single shot is an on-line diagnostic on the spheromak device of CTX. The system includes a 22-joule, dual-beam ruby laser, large collection optics, and a spectrophotometer that contains a 40-mm dual chevron micro-channel-plate image intensifier tube as shutter and first stage of light amplification. A unique method of calibration that uses an 870-mm-long tungsten rod light source for instrument transmission and linearity measurements is described. Examples of data and temperature profiles are presented.

Book Multiple point Thomson Scattering Measurement for the ZT 40 Reversed field Pinch

Download or read book Multiple point Thomson Scattering Measurement for the ZT 40 Reversed field Pinch written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multiple-point Thomson scattering device, capable of giving radial electron temperature profiles, has been developed for the ZT-40 reversed field pinch experiment. The measurement is accomplished by observing the Thomson scattered spectrum from along an entire chord of focused ruby-laser light traversing the minor diameter of the plasma. A specially built, nearly diffraction limited laser is focused through the plasma using a long focal length lens. The detector uses specially designed collection optics to focus the entire scattering volume into an image dissecting array of fiber optics, which serves as the entrance slit to an anastigmatic spectrograph. The dispersed spectra from all the spatial locations are detected with a gated microchannel plate image intensifier, and recorded on an optical multichannel anlyzer using a SIT tube detector. A computer interface is used for data transmission for analysis. Results from the ZT-40 experiment will be presented.

Book Thomson Scattering Diagnostic for the Microwave Tokamak Experiment

Download or read book Thomson Scattering Diagnostic for the Microwave Tokamak Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thomson-scattering diagnostic system (TSS) on the Microwave Tokamak Experiment (MTX) at LLNL routinely monitors electron temperature (T{sub e}) and density. Typical measured values at the plasma center under clean conditions are 900 {plus minus} 70 eV and 1 to 2 x 1014 ({plus minus}30%) cm−3. The TSS apparatus is compact, with all elements mounted on one sturdy, two-level optics table. Because of this, we maintain with minimum effort the alignment of both the ruby-laser input optics and the scattered-light collecting optics. Undesired background signals, e.g., plasma light as well as ruby-laser light scattered off obstacles and walls, are generally small compared with the Thomson-scattered signals we normally detect. In the MTX T{sub e} region, the TSS data are definitely fitted better when relativistic effects are included in the equations. Besides determining the temperature of the Maxwellian electron distribution, the system is designed to detect electron heating from GW-level free-electron laser (FEL) pulses by measuring large wavelength shifts of the scattered laser photons. TSS data suggest that we may indeed by able to detect these electrons, which can have energies up to 10 keV, according to computer simulation. 7 refs., 4 figs.

Book Spectral Multiplexing on the HSX Thomson Scattering Diagnostic

Download or read book Spectral Multiplexing on the HSX Thomson Scattering Diagnostic written by Wayne R. Goodman and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomson scattering is a fundamental diagnostic tool in high-temperature plasma experiments, providing crucial measurements of electron temperature and density profiles. The operation of Thomson scattering diagnostics involves the propagation of an intense radiation beam through an ionized plasma, with the scattered light from free electrons within the plasma being analyzed. The spectral content of this scattered light contains information on the temperature and density of the plasma under observation. In this work, sources of error are derived and deconstructed for a Thomson scattering system, focusing on three key factors that influence measurement uncertainty: the number of primary photoelectrons generated per pulse, the uncertainty arising from the non-ideal nature of the physical detection apparatus, and the analysis routine's ability to converge on a correct solution. Meticulous examination of these error terms has led to a significant redesign of the Thomson Scattering system at the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX). This redesign, aimed at reducing noise susceptibility while increasing system bandwidth and gain, has involved electronic upgrades and the development of a new signal analysis routine. Results from testing are promising, showing that the redesigned detection electronics and analysis routine have significantly decreased measurement errors compared to the previous diagnostic setup. This work goes beyond systematic improvements, focusing on enhancing the quality and content of measured data without increasing the required number of spectral channels, leading to the development of a novel spectral analysis technique, Thomson Scattering Spectral Multiplexing (TSSM). In a standard Thomson scattering diagnostic, scattered light is divided into wide spectral bands by a filter polychromator equipped with three to eight single bandpass filters. TSSM leverages advanced filters with multiple spectral bands to efficiently utilize Thomson scattered spectra. The results of implementing two TSSM filter sets on the HSX Thomson scattering diagnostic show a reduction in measurement uncertainty and an increased range of electron temperature measurements compared to a filter set with an equivalent number of spectral channels. As a result of this work, the Thomson scattering diagnostic on HSX is now performing at a previously thought unachievable level.
