Book Emotions in a Crusading Context 1095 1291

Download or read book Emotions in a Crusading Context 1095 1291 written by Stephen J. Spencer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotions in a Crusading Context is the first book-length study of the emotional rhetoric of crusading. It investigates the ways in which a number of emotions and affective displays — primarily fear, anger, and weeping — were understood, represented, and utilized in twelfth- and thirteenth-century western narratives of the crusades, making use of a broad range of comparative material to gauge the distinctiveness of those texts: crusader letters, papal encyclicals, model sermons, chansons de geste, lyrics, and an array of theological and philosophical treatises. In addition to charting continuities and changes over time in the emotional landscape of crusading, this study identifies the underlying influences which shaped how medieval authors represented and used emotions; analyzes the passions crusade participants were expected to embrace and reject; and assesses whether the idea of crusading created a profoundly new set of attitudes towards emotions. Emotions in a Crusading Context calls on scholars of the crusades to reject the traditional methodological approach of taking the emotional descriptions embedded within historical narratives as straightforward reflections of protagonists' lived feelings, and in so doing challenges the long historiographical tradition of reconstructing participants' beliefs and experiences from these texts. Within the history of emotions, Stephen J. Spencer demonstrates that, despite the ongoing drive to develop new methodologies for studying the emotional standards of the past, typified by experiments in 'neurohistory', the social constructionist (or cultural-historical) approach still has much to offer the historian of medieval emotions.

Life storms such as divorce, job loss, illness, financial problems, empty nest, midlife crisis, family fractures, etc. create a world of chaos and confusion and often lead to quiet isolation, depending on the nature of the challenge. In more ordinary situations, someone may feel stuck in a life rut and seek the courage to pursue a new hobby, interest, or job and they need confidence-building tools. Just as a literal storm wreaks havoc in our lives, life reality storms can cause emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental challenges. In The Winds of Change, Julie Shannon shares her own story of reframing life, as well as real-life stories of many others who overcame the unexpected and who and what encouraged them in their journey. Book excerpt: The way to grieve God's way is to model how Jesus grieved. The Bible teaches that Jesus grieved appropriately, properly, and with an eternal perspective. His grief was uncomplicated and forward-looking. Jesus' motivation for all of life was pleasing His Father which influenced His perspective and response to the death of Lazarus, the fall of Jerusalem, and His own death. He knew and applied the principle of gain through loss. Because Jesus grieved God's way, so too can the believer. Because Jesus lived and taught the principle of gain through loss, so too can the believer,. The believer is never under the circumstances and a victim to and in God's providential working but more-than-a-conqueror, because he is in Christ Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major book to examine ancient Christian literature on hell through the lenses of gender and disability studies Throughout the Christian tradition, descriptions of hell’s fiery torments have shaped contemporary notions of the afterlife, divine justice, and physical suffering. But rarely do we consider the roots of such conceptions, which originate in a group of understudied ancient texts: the early Christian apocalypses. In this pioneering study, Meghan Henning illuminates how the bodies that populate hell in early Christian literature—largely those of women, enslaved persons, and individuals with disabilities—are punished after death in spaces that mirror real carceral spaces, effectually criminalizing those bodies on earth. Contextualizing the apocalypses alongside ancient medical texts, inscriptions, philosophy, and patristic writings, this book demonstrates the ways that Christian depictions of hell intensified and preserved ancient notions of gender and bodily normativity that continue to inform Christian identity.
