Book excerpt: When you look in the mirror, what do you see: a person who truly believes he/she is on the right path, or one struggling daily to find a sense of identity? More importantly, how do you see God as you seek the purpose for your life: as your back pocket Lord, or as your personal guide? For some, they may feel they are on the right path but have drifted away from discerning and understanding God’s will for them. This inspired pastor and author Dennis Lee to establish a meaningful resource for readers wanting to grow in their relationship with God, in his new Christian discipleship book; From Here to There: A Journey to Spiritual Transformation, part of his Spiritual Formation series. As an “A through Z roadmap on discipleship,” Dennis offers readers a biblically-sound guide to familiarize readers to biblical principles of what it’s like to be a follower of Jesus Christ, being found in His likeness. Each chapter clarifies this developing relationship with God, established when you accept Jesus as your Savior and Lord, and furthered through changing how you approach living this life in Christ. Pastor Lee takes the reader along this narrow road described by Jesus, looking at a Christian’s true identity when pursuing God’s presence and becoming aligned with His will. To make sure his readers’ stay upon this path, Lee looks at Satan’s potholes that damages a person’s spiritual transformation, as well as God’s speed bumps to help believers slow down and not miss God’s promises for their lives. It’s a journey to the ultimate destination of Heaven with God, and this guide will help you make the necessary changes and take the required steps to stay upon God’s path.

Book Invitation to a Journey

  • Author : M. Robert Mulholland Jr.
  • Publisher : InterVarsity Press
  • Release : 2016-04-21
  • ISBN : 0830893733
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Invitation to a Journey written by M. Robert Mulholland Jr. and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. Robert Mulholland Jr. defines spiritual formation as "the process of being formed in the image of Christ for the sake of others." Compact and solid, this definition encompasses the dynamics of a vital Christian life and counters our culture's tendency to make spirituality a trivial matter or reduce it to a private affair between "me and Jesus." In Invitation to a Journey, Mulholland helps Christians new and old understand that we become like Christ gradually, not instantly. Not every personality is suited to an early morning quiet time, so Mulholland frees different personality types to express their piety differently. He reviews the classical spiritual disciplines and demonstrates the importance of undertaking our spiritual journey with (and for the sake of) others. This road map for spiritual formation is profoundly biblical and down to earth. In the finest tradition of spiritual literature, it is a vital help to Christians at any stage of their journey. This edition is revised and expanded by Ruth Haley Barton with a new foreword, practices and study guide.

Book The Gift of Being Yourself

Download or read book The Gift of Being Yourself written by David G. Benner and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know thee." —Augustine Much is said in Christian circles about knowing God. But Christians throughout the ages have agreed that there cannot be deep knowledge of God without deep knowledge of the self. Discerning your true self is inextricably related to discerning God's purposes for you. Paradoxically, the more you become like Christ, the more you become authentically yourself. In this profound exploration of Christian identity, psychologist and spiritual director David G. Benner illuminates the spirituality of self-discovery. He exposes the false selves that you may hide behind and calls you to discover the true self that emerges from your uniqueness in Christ. Freeing you from illusions about yourself, Benner shows that self-understanding leads to the fulfillment of your God-given destiny and vocation. Rest assured, you need not try to be someone you are not. But you will deepen your experience of God through discovering the gift of being yourself. This expanded edition, one of three titles in The Spiritual Journey trilogy, includes a new epilogue and an experiential guide with questions for individual reflection or group discussion.

Book All Is Self

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph P. Kauffman
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2018-08-12
  • ISBN : 9781723141379
  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book All Is Self written by Joseph P. Kauffman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every culture has a story, a narrative, or worldview that shapes the way they think and act. This narrative describes who we are, what life is, and what our purpose is. To the people born and raised in their culture, their narrative is believed to be the truth, or is so widely accepted that they don't even notice its existence; to them, it is simply the way things are, since it is all they have ever known, and all they've been raised to believe since birth. The prevailing worldview of our culture is that we are isolated individuals who exist apart from the rest of the world, and are living in an unintelligent and mechanical universe made of matter, governed by random and chaotic forces, and from this random and insentient universe of inert matter, through an accidental and improbable process of evolution, life emerged. This belief is widely accepted by the majority of people; it is taught in our schools, it is proclaimed by our scientists, it is assumed by our societies and governments. This worldview is so widely accepted that the majority of people never stop to question their narrative, to ask themselves why they believe it, how it makes them feel, whether or not it is true, nor especially how this worldview is the cause of human conflict and the rapid destruction of the natural world. What appears to be a vast and complex worldwide situation of external conflict, has its roots in a simple and subtle internal cause: we do not really know who we are. We have confused our true identity with an illusory identity created by our minds. This book draws attention to the fact that it is our culturally inherited beliefs and our definition of who we are that causes us to suffer, and that if we can question these beliefs, and discover the truth of who we are, we will have freedom and peace. For we are not separate, isolated beings, as our culture leads us to believe. We are all strands in the web of life, parts of the greater whole of nature, and more than that, we are the whole of nature expressed as individual parts. If we can realize this fundamental truth-that our true self is the whole of nature, and that all beings are a part of our self-we can have peace and harmony on Earth. From this new understanding of who we are, we will act accordingly. When our actions reflect our understanding of oneness, and have in mind the benefit of the whole, then every action will be one that benefits all beings. But to accomplish this, we have to be able to look at our cultural narratives, question the stories that we live by, and change this worldview of separation by realizing that ultimately all is one. All is self.

Book Spirituality and the Awakening Self

Download or read book Spirituality and the Awakening Self written by David G. PhD Benner and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being human is a lifelong journey of becoming. This journey defines our humanity, for it is a journey toward our source and our fulfillment, described in Christian theology as union with God. If we remain open to God as our sense of self awakens, we experience a deeper consciousness of being in him. The self that emerges during this process is larger, more enlightened, and whole. David Benner, who has spent thirty-five years integrating psychology and spirituality, presents psychological insights in a readable fashion to offer readers a deeper understanding of the self and its spiritual development. Drawing on a broad range of Christian traditions, Benner shows that the transformation of self is foundational to Christian spirituality. This book will appeal to readers interested in a psychologically grounded, fresh exploration of Christian spirituality; professionals engaged in pastoral care, counseling, and spiritual direction; and students in ministry development and spiritual formation courses. Questions and answers for individual or group use are included at the end of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bookwi.se's Favorite Books of the Year "Only God deserves absolute surrender because only God can offer absolutely dependable love." In our self-reliant era, most of us recoil from the concept of surrendering to a power or authority outside ourselves. But surrender need not be seen as threatening, especially when the One to whom we surrender is the epitome of goodness and love. God doesn't want his people to respond to him out of fear or obligation. Rather, he invites us to enter into an authentic relationship of intimacy and devotion. And so God calls us to move beyond mere obedience—by surrendering to love. In this profound book, David G. Benner explores the twin themes of love and surrender as the heart of Christian spirituality. Through careful examination of Scripture and reflection on the Christian tradition, Benner shows how God bids us to trust fully in his perfect love. God is love, and he intends for you to live in his love. Surrender to Love will lead you to an unexpected place, where yieldedness to God frees you to become who he created you to be. This expanded edition, one of three titles in The Spiritual Journey trilogy, includes a new epilogue and an experiential guide with questions for individual reflection or group discussion.
