Book China on the Road to Democracy

Download or read book China on the Road to Democracy written by Samuel Schmid and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject South Asian Studies, South-Eastern Asian Studies, grade: 1.5, University of Luzern (Politikwissenschaftliches Seminar), language: English, abstract: Democracy is a system of popular government, in which power is retained and exerted by citizens. The democratization process is ascribed to a complex arrangement of social, cultural, economic and political factors. China is not a democracy. As stipulated in the Chinese constitution, the Communist Party of China (CPC) possesses a monopoly on political power. The nation is headed by a paramount leader. Confucianism is the dominant philosophy in China. The question whether it is compatible with democracy has been widely discussed. However, several elements of Confucian ideology can be interpreted in a way that makes it suitable for democratic progress. The first significant experiments with democracy in China were made during the time of the First Republic (1912-1927). There have been a number of democratic movements in China and even within the CPC since then. Nowadays, the citizenry of villages can elect their local leaders, though most of them are CPC members. I believe that China will transform into an ‘Asian-style’ democracy, once the economic upturn has created a strong middle class that will not accept to be suppressed any longer.

Book A Path for Chinese Civil Society

Download or read book A Path for Chinese Civil Society written by Jianxing Yu and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-02-12 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines empirical research and theoretical discussions to demonstrate that the civil society paradigm as a western concept could be applicable to the study of state-society relations in contemporary China. However, the growth of Chinese civil society does not necessarily present an adversarial or confrontational relationship between state and society, but rather it is a cooperative relationship based on common interests and mutual benefits between industrial associations and local governments. The findings of this research confirm that, in contrast to the conventional civil society model in Western and Eastern Europe, where civic organizations are independent of the state, challenging the state hegemony, Chinese civic organizations, however, still lack autonomy and even remain closely linked to the state, but they are growing and expanding their public space and important role in public affairs through active participation. This non-western path for civil society development is a precise reflection of reality that is profoundly shaped and constrained by Chinese institutional, sociological, and cultural context. Through close investigation into the industrial, organizational, and social governance of industrial associations in Wenzhou and in-depth analysis of their challenges and developments within the institutional context, this book provides fresh empirical evidence and insightful analysis of how industrial associations have actively participated in local industrial governance and conduct of public affairs, gained greater space for their development, and become indispensable partners of local government in social governance.

Book The Road to Privatization of Higher Education in China

Download or read book The Road to Privatization of Higher Education in China written by Li Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes both empirical and conceptual contributions to the debate on privatization of higher education in China. Empirically, it aims to fill a gap in our knowledge of privatization of higher education in North China. To this end, Beijing was chosen as a case for analysis, and nine local higher educational institutions were visited. The case study strategy is also complemented by an extensive review of national policies to reveal problems beyond the specific case of Beijing and of national concern. The effects of the cultural and socioeconomic background and the unique state-party controlling system on higher education management are stressed. Conceptually, most existing studies on privatization of higher education in China adopt a policy analysis approach, while research on privatization of other public sectors or in other countries is frequently guided by economic theories. This book thus seeks to combine both social policy and econometric approaches to provide a systematic and detailed investigation of the privatization process in the context of higher education. It also improves examines the applicability of western theories in the Chinese context.
