Book excerpt: When Archie Stanley became interested in the National Geographic Genome Mapping Project, his imagination and memory were both inspired. After seeing the prehistoric and historical routes and migrations of his ancestors, he fully realized how important it is to know who you are, and where you come from. Journeys is his reference book for his grandsons, tracing their genealogy, heritage, and history. From the primordial swamp to the heraldic fields of England, from hunters and gatherers to Colonial settlers, from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam, Journeys weaves the distant past with the known past, and even gives predictions about the future of mankind. A seamless blend of science fiction, informed speculation, family archives and source material, DNA testing, and memory, Journeys is a testament to the bonds of family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Journeys into the Wild" is a poetic escape to a fragile and breathtaking wilderness, with celebrated photographer Peter Dombrovskis as our guide. In 2003, Dombrovskis was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame, the first Australian and one of only 77 people to be accorded this honour worldwide. Bob Brown and Peter Dombrovskis forged their friendship in the battle to save the Gordon and Franklin rivers. During the campaign, Peter would take one of the most famous photographs in Australian history, "Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend, Franklin River". In this book, Brown introduces Dombrovskis' work and provides commentary on some of his favourite images, reproduced here in full colour with stunning clarity. From sweeping vistas of Tasmania to close-ups of a leaf's skeleton or a spider's web, these photographs are at once a paean to the wild and a plea to conserve it for future generations.

It provides a comfort for the present and a vision of hope for tomorrow even when conditions appear intractable, hopeless or even terminal. Non-Christians will find it a valuable introduction to God and Jesus Christ. They will hopefully feel the power of God and the grace of Jesus. It will hopefully serve as an invitation for coming into the family of God, through Jesus Christ. The author confronts issues from a practical life experience. His admonitions are thoughtful, insightful, honest and unvarnished. This is a book that will strengthen the weak; comfort the discomforted; lift up the down-hearted; and put a new spirit in the readers' walk and relationship with God. The subtitled, in words and spirit is a catalyst for Finding Comfort in Times of Need, to those who believe.

Download or read book V S Naipaul s Journeys written by Sanjay Krishnan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of more than thirty books of fiction and nonfiction and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, V. S. Naipaul (1932–2018) is one of the most acclaimed authors of the twentieth century. He is also one of the most controversial. Before settling in England, Naipaul grew up in Trinidad in an Indian immigrant community, and his depiction of colonized peoples has often been harshly judged by critics as unsympathetic, misguided, racist, and sexist. Yet other readers praise his work as containing uncommonly perceptive historical and psychological insight. In V. S. Naipaul’s Journeys, Sanjay Krishnan offers new perspectives on the distinctiveness and power of Naipaul’s writing, as well as his shortcomings, trajectory, and complicated legacy. While recognizing the flaws and prejudices that shaped and limited Naipaul’s life and art, this book challenges the binaries that have dominated discussions of his writing. Krishnan reads Naipaul as self-subverting and self-critical, engaged in describing his own implication in what he saw as the malaise of the postcolonial world. Krishnan brings together close readings of major novels with considerations of Naipaul’s work as a united project, as well as nuanced assessments of Naipaul’s political commentary on ethnic nationalism and religious fundamentalism. Krishnan provides a Naipaul for contemporary times, illustrating how his life and work shed light on debates regarding migration, diversity, sectarianism, displacement, and other global challenges.
Download or read book Journeys Beyond Gubuluwayo written by Roberts, R.S. and published by Weaver Press. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of these letters of Fathers Depelchin and Croonenberghs completes the rendition into English of the original two-volume work in French by these Jesuits of the Zambesi Mission. The first volume of letters marked the centenary of their arrival in what is now Zimbabwe and described the missionaries’ journey up from Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape and the establishment of a mission house near Lobengula’s capital. This second volume continues the story of the Mission from 1880. The letters are the record of the trials and tribulations they suffered in their over-ambitious plans for expansion beyond Gubuluwayo: to the east in Mzila’s Gazaland, another Nguni migrant state like that of Lobengula’s Ndebele; for the Middle Zambezi among the sateless Tonga; and for the upper Zambezi in Lewanika’s recently restored Lozi kingdom. The book ends on a note of failure after much loss of life, despite their courage and fortitude.
Download or read book Shamanic Journeys An Anthology written by Michael Drake and published by Talking Drum Publications. This book was released on 2022-05-22 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology of shamanic journeys that I have taken over my 35-year exploration of shamanism, the most ancient and most enduring spiritual tradition known to humanity. Each inner journey has a unique story about what led up to the trance experience, and what I learned from it. They were powerful life-changing events for me. Journey work is therapeutic and liberating. My trance experiences were healing, insightful and empowering. They often triggered the cathartic release of suppressed emotions producing feelings of peace and well-being. The process restores emotional health through expression and integration of emotions.
