Book Journey Through Many Worlds

Download or read book Journey Through Many Worlds written by Johan Dempers and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fascinating story which started 15 years ago when the author responded to a newspaper advertisement from one Joe Brooks, seeking a fellow adventurer to take part in what seemed to be a crazy venture: a 15,000 kilometer trip across the continent of South America-by pane, train, on foot and by canoe. Together, the two men travelled through the ancient ruins of long lost civilizations, over the snow-capped Andes Mountains, and into the rainforests of the Amazon. Their six-month journey into the unknown took the two through some of the remotest and wilders regions on the face of our planet. Their capture by Indians deep in the jungle of Brazil-and their subsequent release after a police raid on the Indian village-made international headlines, but that was only a part of the author's incredible adventures. This autobiographical work will also take you on an action-packed trip to the war-torn regions of Angola, Iraq, and Afghanistan-but ultimately it is a story about extraordinary events happening to ordinary people. It is a Journey through Many Worlds: but, wait, is isn't over yet.... "We seldom hear or read about men who still fit the mound of 'adventurers.' I am proud to know one such man and to have shared time working with him. As a man, he has played a part in many great adventures and travels across the globe-from the desperate and bloody battlefields of Angola to the desolation and dangerous fields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Despite severe injuries, he has ever abandoned his love and passion for adventure and the Amazon trip is a perfect example of a man with drive and gumption-a man who is not put off by the unknown."-Eeben Barlow, ex-SADF Lieutenant-Colonel and founder of Executive Outcomes.

Book The Amazon from Source to Sea

Download or read book The Amazon from Source to Sea written by West Hansen and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty-year-old canoe racer-turned-explorer West Hansen is planning to kayak the Amazon River when he learns that everyone - cartographers, adventurers, even his own sponsor, National Geographic Society - has misplaced the source of the world's greatest river. One of exploration's great prizes is suddenly back up for grabs, and to claim it all Hansen has to shepherd a team of irascible Texans and international whitewater stars some 4,200 miles, from the crest of the Peruvian Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. The journey brings him face-to-face with a controversy as old as Livingstone's quest for the source of the Nile, in addition to the usual obstacles. With great humor and insight, Hansen details a wild ride full of personality conflicts, extortion, Machiavellian subterfuge, pirates, drug lords, uncharted whitewater, massive thunderstorms, injuries, illness, fatigue, tropical heat, blizzards, altitude sickness, jungle drunks, bales of marijuana, substandard scotch, bureaucratic labyrinths, loneliness, colossal tides and the unstoppable force of the largest and longest river on the planet. -- Jeff Moag, Freelance Writer and Editor, former editor of Canoe and Kayak Magazine

  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book A Journey in Brazil written by Louis Agassiz and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Agassiz sheds insight into Brazil's history: his travels took place in the 1860s, when the country was undergoing great change as an Empire and grappling with its this development. The author offers eye-opening accounts of a Brazil now lost to time; observations of the urban culture and life, and the natural habitat of the countryside and forests, offer the reader immense insight into the era. Most of the text is written as a narrative diary, wherein Agassiz observes and describes traversing colonial-era Rio de Janeiro, the city of Manaus, the Amazon river, various small towns and villages, and the vast rainforests. As a zoologist, Agassiz's interest in the diverse wildlife present in Brazil forms a recurring theme in this book. However, the text is careful not to dwell too long on matters obscure or scientific; while the author is clearly at work, he also covers matters of culture and day-to-day life. Anecdotes include lectures which Brazil's Emperor Pedro II attended; the leader arranges the room's chairs that he sits equally with other attendees - reasoning that science does not distinguish people by rank or position. As Agassiz and his company travel through Brazil, we are treated to many vignettes of life. The fiestas, street scenes and atmosphere of the locales are evocatively described. We hear of bustling markets and harbors, plazas in which coffee beans dry, the periodic hunting, and an enmeshed, diverse society blending European habits and native customs. The beginnings of modernity, such as plans for railroads, are also detailed. In a later portion of the book Agassiz expounds on differences between what he terms the 'human races' - opinions which have since come into disrepute. This new edition of A Journey in Brazil reproduces the twenty-five illustrations of the original 1868 text, as well as the author's appendices and notes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to the fascinating world of the Amazon rainforest as seen through the eyes of the native peoples, artisans, students and tourists. Anacondas, caimans, monkeys, shamans, yucca harvests, river cruises, legends and much more come to life in this amusing yet suspenseful book. Elizabeth Long, an Anthropology professor, and her group of students travel to the Amazon jungle for a study abroad trip. In this bold adventure, they encounter life as never before imagined, living with a tribe on the world’s mightiest river. The voyage takes a sudden turn when the discovery of diamonds in the area leads to a robbery. It is an event that will cause the students’ lives to converge with two elderly British tourists and two local men who work at the diamond mine, weaving them together in a race to recover the diamonds before time runs out. The book unearths the spirit of the Amazon peoples and recreates the beauty of the rainforest - the sights, smells, tastes, sounds, and dangers of this unique place. A riveting chronicle. Most entertaining is the way in which humorous tales, changing attitudes and the straddling of two very different worlds are revealed by following the visitors and natives’ days.
