This book was released on 2016-11-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the United States Artillery, 1896, Vol. 5 Europe has learned the lesson which the franco-prussian War taught; all the great nations of the world, except America, have studied the military problems which confront them, and have endeavored to secure the best possible organization for their forces; Japan's unbroken series of victories over her foe, geo graphically and numerically so great, is but the latest illustration of what all future wars will prove; but regardless of proof, we bury our heads, ostrich-like, in the sands of indifference and ignorance; there has been more advance in military science during the past twenty-five years than in any preceding century, yet we have done but little to improve the organization of our military forces. The Honorable Daniel S. Lamont, Secretary of War, in his report submitted to the President, November 1895, says: The organization of the line of the army has undergone no material change since the close of the civil war. During this period of thirty-years every large foreign army has been com pletely reorganized. With great wealth and millions of able bodied men, we have neglected those simple precautions which common sense and military knowledge point out as necessary, and as a result of this policy of indifference, the lives and property of our people and our national honor are at the mercy of a dozen possible enemies. Arguments may be advanced to prove to the satisfaction of many of our citizens that we should not keep a large standing army; but can a single American be found who will argue that what forces we have should not be well organized, or that we should retain a defective or imperfect organization? This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the United States Artillery, 1917, Vol. 47 Searchlights were first used in the Civil War. These were fitted with metal mirrors and were very crude. The first electrical searchlight was employed in the year 1867 by the French but it proved to be of little practical value until the invention of the Mangin mirror in the year 1877. In the course of the war of 1870-1871, several projectors were used at Paris, but without any great success. The elec tric dynamo, however, gave considerable impetus to their em ployment, and the construction of illuminating apparatus was therefore begun; but, because of its slight mobility, it could be used only during siege operations and then only on the defensive side. Fortified places were but scantily provided with projectors, and since it was in the first stages of develop ment there was but one size of mirror, i.e., thirty-five inch it was hoped that with that size all the situations arising during the siege could be properly faced. No one occupied himself with the tactical use of projectors, and the night exercises where they played their proper part were rare. The Sites chosen for the apparatus were often just the reverse of what they should have been and but little thought was given, indeed none at all, to the use of lights according to the tactical situation. The troops were not sufficiently interested in these new engines of war and, also, they could not believe that there was any well advised use for them. Download or read book Journal of the United States Artillery Vol 44 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the United States Artillery, Vol. 44: November-December, 1915 Although Port Arthur, previous to its occupation by the Japanese in 1894, was an inconspicuous, fishing village, it had increased in importance in a political and strategical sense as time went on, and in 1903 and 1904 became an important prize for which both nations were about to strive in a titanic struggle. At the beginning of the war a large part of the Russian fleet was based on Port Arthur and at that time their Pacific fleet was substantially equal to, if not superior to the fleet of Japan. Japan had never forgotten or forgiven the action of the powers which had deprived her of her just reward of victory, and quietly bided her time when an opportunity would be presented for retaking the place by force. For ten years she silently prepared for that event. Japan therefore, in 1904, had sentimental as well as political and' economical reasons for her great and persistent efforts against Port Arthur. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “No man in this war has so well told the story of the American fighting man as American fighting men wanted it told,” wrote Harry Truman. “He deserves the gratitude of all his countrymen.” THIS is the final book of Ernie Pyle’s war reporting. After Africa, Italy, and D-Day on the European continent, Pyle took it the hard way again. There was still the Pacific war to win, and where the fighting was Ernie had to go, soul-sick though he was with the thousands of scenes of death and destruction he had already witnessed. He was attached to the Navy early in 1945. In the Marianas first and then living with the boys who flew the B-29s over the Japanese homeland, Pyle was experiencing a side of the war that was new to him. Next he joined an aircraft carrier on the invasion of Okinawa. He made the landing with the Marines and saw Okinawa secured. Then his luck ran out. A Japanese bullet killed Ernie Pyle on April 17th, 1945 on Ie Shima, and Americans lost their greatest and best-loved correspondent. Millions mourned the going of this modest man who wrote of the war with all honesty and no pretensions, and whose writings will stand as one of the most vital records of the struggle. LAST CHAPTER is a brief, brave little book to complete that record permanently. There is a sixteen-page picture section and an index of names and places.
