This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1890, Vol. 12 This being the first time such a meeting as the present, with such an object, has been held, I hope you will agree with me that a brief review of our present position will not be out of place. Let us now, therefore, carry back our recollections of vegetable culture twenty-five to thirty years, a period still fresh in the memory of many of you, and try to ascertain approximately what progress has been made during that period, and in what direction it has chiefly tended. The garden vegetables cultivated a quarter of a century ago were much the same as now as regards kinds, and the comparison can thence be made without the introduction of any new element. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1920-21, Vol. 46 With the design of helping those to Whom the technical terms of descriptive botany are unfamiliar, I have prefaced the description of each species with a brief note of the characteristics by which it may be distinguished from its nearest allies. I would like to warn readers that reliance on the figures alone may sometimes lead them astray in a genus 'so large and complicated; even if the full description of the plant is not used, a careful study of the short note mentioned is quite necessary if pitfalls are to be avoided. Download or read book Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society Vol 21 written by Royal Horticultural Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, Vol. 21: 1897-1898 The old Greek naturalists thought that the food of plants was elaborated beforehand in the earth, as in a stomach, and it took centuries of work to establish the fact that what the ordinary plant takes up by its roots in the absorbed water is only mineral matters of the ash, constituting but a minute fraction of the food-materials of the plant (absolutely essential, however), to be worked up in the leaves with the far larger quantities of gases there taken in and assimilated in the chlorophyll apparatus by means of energy obtained from the sun. It was part of the price to be paid for rescuing the physiology of plant-nutrition from the grip of the old ideas of Aristotle, in the disastrous more modern form they had assumed in 1835 - 40 when the humus theory held sway, that soil came to be regarded as merely a mineral medium of value to the plant in preportion to its contents in certain chemical salts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1908, Vol. 33: Parts I and II By tendency to vary, he evidently means Response to the direct' action Of the new conditions Of life. TO judge from the past, had Darwin lived until today, he would have become assured that Definite Results are not only plentiful but universal; and that Indefinite Results - among which the majority are Injurious variations - do not occur at all under any new conditions Of life in nature so that New sub-varieties, and we may add varieties, species, and genera, are, in fact, always produced without the aid Of natural selection. The reader will perceive that, unlike Darwinism, Darwin himself conclusively shows that this alternative interpretation of the Origin Of Species is no theory at all, but represents the true Natural Law Of Evolution. This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society of London, 1898, Vol. 22 Geographically considered, California is one of the most favoured districts on the American continent. The Pacific Ocean washes its entire western shore. To the east lie several lesser ranges of mountains, backed up by the Rockies. The Oregon State line is a continuation of California northward, while to the south, genial and balmy Mexico abuts in such a friendly way that the traveller must needs inquire where one country ends and the other begins. Thus it is that, tempered by warm trade winds from the ocean, and lofty mountain ranges protecting us from the East - where the land is frozen in winter and scorched in summer - Nature has smiled upon us and placed every possible need of mankind within our reach. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1888, Vol. 10 In the 1883 Congress it had been thought desirable to secure the representation of all the varieties of apples in cultivation, whether valuable or otherwise, so as to arrive by comparison at an estimate of their worth. But this having been once done, and the results duly recorded, it was not now considered necessary to go over the same ground again; it was only proposed therefore to invite the exhibition of such varieties as find favour, or may be considered thoroughly worthy of cultivation. And one Object of the Conference being to illustrate by facts and examples the present state and future prospects of commercial fruit culture in this country, it was desired that contributors Should endeavour, as far as possible, to furnish samples of fruits that are in favour in the markets of their several localities. All fruit growers, whether private gardeners or growers for market, were invited to exhibit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society of London, 1866, Vol. 1 The changes of form in the species of the vegetable kingdom are very properly considered at the present moment one of the phe nomena which are most worthy of attracting the attention of observers. The subject of the variability of species, which was put aside amongst questions of secondary consideration, has within a short time assumed an unexpected importance; and without mentioning the philosophical deductions to which it has given rise, it may be asserted that it forces itself on our notice at the very commencement of all our descriptive works. For the last ten years I have devoted to it all my attention, and though duly estimating the facts in this direction observed by my predecessors, it is nevertheless to my own experiments I have looked, especially for enlightenment on this obscure subject. I do not pretend to have solved all the difficulties which it involves, but I think that I have arrived at results which, I hope at least, will throw some light upon points in the biology of vegetables which have been hitherto perplexed. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1907, Vol. 32 The primary consideration in the formation of any garden should be the suitability of the site for the specific purpose in view. If greater attention were paid to this, the instances of failure or Of unsatisfactory progress would be far less frequent. Having chosen the site, then adapt it in the best possible way for the Object intended. It is now well known that exposure to the keen biting winds of both winter and Spring is oftentimes more conducive to failure than frost itself. To this essential point due regard must be paid in the case of many plants indigenous to Japan such, for instance, as bamboos and palms; even the maples and some of the coniferae require shelter from cold Winds such as we experience in most parts of England. Shelter must therefore be provided, if not already existing in a sufficient degree. In our case we had scarcely any provision to make in this respect, being well screened by evergreens, walls, and tall trees. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1896-7, Vol. 20 I adopt the plan of placing pieces of tough fibrous loam or peat when planting and surfacing around the stem of the plants so as to encircle each plant this prevents any superfluous moisture settling at the base or collar of the plants through watering and syringing during the season, which so often pro duces canker, thereby causing the death of the plant and loss of the crop. From 2 feet 6 inches to 3 feet apart is a good distance for house work, and for pits and frames one plant placed in the centre of each light will be sufficient, as this distance allows the plants to extend without the growth being crowded - a most im portant point to be considered. Regulating the growth - Train the plants to a neat stake until the trellis is reached; rub Off all growths as they show from the stem below the trellis train the growths right and left and allow the leading stem to grow up without stopping to within a foot of the top. If the side shoots are likely to be crowded, pinch out some at first sight, as the Melon will not endure thinning so severely as the Cucumber; therefore the growths should be stopped and thinned early enough for those remaining to just cover the trellis with well-developed foliage and no more.
