Book Metallography and Microstructure in Ancient and Historic Metals

Download or read book Metallography and Microstructure in Ancient and Historic Metals written by David A. Scott and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David A. Scott provides a detailed introduction to the structure and morphology of ancient and historic metallic materials. Much of the scientific research on this important topic has been inaccessible, scattered throughout the international literature, or unpublished; this volume, although not exhaustive in its coverage, fills an important need by assembling much of this information in a single source. Jointly published by the GCI and the J. Paul Getty Museum, the book deals with many practical matters relating to the mounting, preparation, etching, polishing, and microscopy of metallic samples and includes an account of the way in which phase diagrams can be used to assist in structural interpretation. The text is supplemented by an extensive number of microstructural studies carried out in the laboratory on ancient and historic metals. The student beginning the study of metallic materials and the conservation scientist who wishes to carry out structural studies of metallic objects of art will find this publication quite useful.

Book The Journal of the Institute of Metals 1913 Vol 10 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Journal of the Institute of Metals 1913 Vol 10 Classic Reprint written by Institute Of Metals and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Institute of Metals, 1913, Vol. 10 It is made entirely of copper sheet, riveted together, and gilded. In length it. Is 11 feet 6 inches, measured from the tip of the tongue to the end of the tail. The height is 6 feet, from the feet to the ears, and the width 2 feet 6 inches. The Dragon was constructed in Ghent in 1377 - 78, and was regarded as the guardian of the city treasury and archives. It was for this reason that it was placed in its dominating position at the top of the tower. During the Middle Ages it was taken down several times for regilding. On one of these occasions, in 1543, there was placed in it, prior to its re-erection, a Copper box containing money of the period and parchment records, a box which was opened some hundreds of years later, and which is now in the Museum at Ghent. The last time the Dragon was taken down was in 1912, when it was repaired and regilded in readiness for the Ghent International Exhibition of 1913. Book Modern Metals in Cultural Heritage

Download or read book Modern Metals in Cultural Heritage written by Virginia Costa and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical guide provides artists, conservators, curators, and other heritage professionals with tools for understanding, evaluating, and approaching the care and treatment of modern metals. The proliferation of new metals—such as stainless steels, aluminum alloys, and metallic coatings—in modern and contemporary art and architecture has made the need for professionals who can address their conservation more critical than ever. This volume seeks to bridge the gap between the vast technical literature on metals and the pressing needs of conservators, curators, and other heritage professionals without a metallurgy background. It offers practical information in a simple and direct way, enabling curators, conservators, and artists alike to understand and evaluate the objects under their care. This invaluable reference reframes information formerly found only in specialized technical and industrial publications for the context of cultural heritage conservation. As the first book to address the properties, testing, and maintenance issues of the hundreds of metals and alloys available since the beginning of the twentieth century, it is destined to become an essential resource for conservators, artists, fabricators, curators, collectors, and anyone working with modern metals.

Book Metals and Materials

Download or read book Metals and Materials written by R. E. Smallman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals and Materials: Science, Processes, Applications aims to present the science of materials in a readable and concise form that leads naturally to an explanation of the ways in which materials are processed and applied. The science of metals, or physical metallurgy, has developed naturally into the wider and more diverse discipline of materials science. The study of metals and alloys still forms a large and important part of this relatively new discipline, but it’s common to find that fundamental principles and concepts of physical metallurgy can be adapted to explain the behavior of a variety of non-metallic materials. As an aid to fully study this discipline, each chapter has been supplemented with a list of specialized references. These references include images and diagrams that illustrate the subtleties of materials, such as micrographs of grain structures and fine-scale defects, phase diagrams for metals and ceramics, electron diffraction patterns revealing atomic arrangements, specific property diagrams correlating the behavior of different materials, and slip vector diagrams for deforming crystals. Throughout this book, sufficient background and theory is provided to assist students in answering questions about a large part of a typical degree course in materials science and engineering. Some sections provide a background or point of entry for postgraduate studies and courses.
