CISSE was established to provide the single authoritative forum for conducting meaningful dialogue across government, industry, and the academic sectors through agencies involved in protecting our nation's information and communication assets. The CAE community meets yearly at our annual CISSE conference to discuss excellence in cybersecurity education. At the conference, top cybersecurity scholars present research that advances cybersecurity education as a discipline and offer new ideas for developing and maturing the next generation of cybersecurity experts. To ensure the highest academic standards, papers submitted each undergoes a rigorous refereeing process and the best are presented at the Conference. Following the conference, an editorial board selects a subset of the best papers to be included in our Journal. The publications herein, from our 23rd annual conference, reflect the best possible advances in cybersecurity, cybersecurity education, and related technologies. Graduates' readiness for the workplace is a major focus that includes recommendations for problem-based and hands-on learning. It is a reminder of our mandate to properly prepare the next generation of cyber defenders. The carefully selected articles in this issue discuss ways to more effectively improve the quality of cybersecurity education which is, ultimately, a major line of defense for our nation's networks. It is the goal of The Colloquium to offer academics and researchers this forum for a wide-ranging dialogue on how best to close the cybersecurity talent gap. Sharing research on how to best produce the next generation of cyber defenders, constitutes a critical step in overcoming existing blind spots in our thinking and ensuring that cybersecurity education will continue to evolve as a robust discipline.

Book excerpt: Since 1996 the Colloquium for Information System Security Education (CISSE) has been the voice of academia for cybersecurity. CISSE was established to provide the single authoritative forum for conducting meaningful dialogue between the wide range of government, industry, and academic entities involved in the protection of our nation's information and its information and communication technology assets. The Community meets annually to discuss the most effective means of maintaining a high standard of excellence in practice in cybersecurity education. it is important that the highest academic standards apply to the presentation of new knowledge to the membership. Therefore, the papers submitted undergo double blind refereeing process and a percentage are presented in individual sessions at the Conference. The articles in this Journal address ways to more effectively leverage this emerging new discipline, which is dedicated to the defense of information. Spreading the net as wide as possible is a particularly obvious and justifiable way to address threat. And that is our mandate and challenge to the researchers, and cybersecurity professionals of the future. What you will find in this issue are eight carefully selected articles that discuss aspects of existing threats or new issues that are arising. The articles here represent many avenues of thought. It is our considered opinion that this sort of wide-ranging dialogue constitutes the first steps in overcoming existing biases and lack of knowledge and it takes the first steps in ensuring that cybersecurity education will evolve into the kind of main tent profession that we all want it to be.

Book excerpt: Psybersecurity: Human Factors of Cyber Defence is a clarion call to action in the face of a stark reality: over 90% of cyberattacks exploit human vulnerabilities, as highlighted by the 2022 Global Risks Report from the World Economic Forum. This gap between the rapid advancement of cyber security technologies and the slower pace of development in human-centric defences poses a formidable challenge to national security and personal safety. Amidst the dazzling progress of AI technologies like ChatGPT and Microsoft Security Co-Pilot, the human element of cyber security remains critically underdeveloped. Set against the backdrop of the Australian government's ambitious goal to become the world's most cybersecure nation by 2030, this book embarks on a mission to address the overlooked human factors in cyber defence. It advocates for a balanced approach that not only relies on technological advancements but also significantly enhances the human aspects of cyber security. Through an interdisciplinary exploration, Psybersecurity delves into how cyberthreats exploit human vulnerabilities and offers innovative solutions for building resilience against these vulnerabilities. It examines the necessity for cyber security strategies that encompass psychological insights, systemic resilience, and the mitigation of human errors, particularly within critical infrastructures and cyber-physical systems (CPS). Furthermore, this work critiques existing cyber security education frameworks, proposing a comprehensive curriculum that equips individuals with technical skills and the behavioural competencies needed to navigate the cyber landscape ethically and effectively. It also addresses AI's ethical dilemmas and psychological impacts, offering a forward-looking perspective on combating AI-driven harassment and endorsing a new field of study: "Psybersecurity." Psybersecurity: Human Factors of Cyber Defence aims to bridge the gap between cyber security and human sciences, ignite a transformation in understanding, and fortify our digital world. It is an essential read for academics, professionals, and anyone committed to building a safer, more resilient cyber future in alignment with Australia's 2030 vision.
