Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book Changing Numbers Changing Needs

Download or read book Changing Numbers Changing Needs written by Committee on Population and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-09-25 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reported population of American Indians and Alaska Natives has grown rapidly over the past 20 years. These changes raise questions for the Indian Health Service and other agencies responsible for serving the American Indian population. How big is the population? What are its health care and insurance needs? This volume presents an up-to-date summary of what is known about the demography of American Indian and Alaska Native population--their age and geographic distributions, household structure, employment, and disability and disease patterns. This information is critical for health care planners who must determine the eligible population for Indian health services and the costs of providing them. The volume will also be of interest to researchers and policymakers concerned about the future characteristics and needs of the American Indian population.

Book Current Issues in Alcohol Drug Studies

Download or read book Current Issues in Alcohol Drug Studies written by Edith S Gomberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative and controversial book challenges a number of widely held ideas in the alcohol/drug field by critically evaluating the bases of these ideas. The field of alcohol/drug studies is fraught with conflict and controversy, and each generation of researchers and practitioners seems to have its own special areas of conflict. In this new volume, experts focus on a number of important issues of current interest and controversy. Is alcoholism a “disease” or is it not? Should federal bans on drugs like heroin and cocaine be removed and will that solve, modify, or exacerbate the problem? Can the risk for alcoholism really be predicted? Professionals from a very wide variety of disciplines--medicine and biochemistry, psychiatry and psychology, philosophy, anthropology, law, social work, and journalism--present their very differing points of view on the perception of alcoholism as a disease and on public policy issues like proposed legislative controls over alcoholic beverages. Current Issues in Alcohol/Drug Studies touches upon a number of questions that will be of interest both to people in alcohol/drug research and in alcohol/drug treatment and prevention. Because it will undoubtedly stimulate further investigation and debate, researchers and policymakers will also find it useful.

Book Alcoholism and Drug Dependence

Download or read book Alcoholism and Drug Dependence written by J. Madden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is for me, as President of the Merseyside Lancashire & Cheshire Council on Alcoholism, a signal privilege to write a brief foreword to these Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. During the week experts, from the world over, in all those disciplines which have a contribution to make to the solution of the problems of alcoholism and drug dependence, surveyed recent advances in our knowledge of the aetiology, epidemiology, early recognition, management, and the social and industrial implications of these twin scourges of the contemporary scene. The discussions were most helpful and enlightening even when a wide spectrum of conflicting views and experiences were revealed. The justification for adding yet another volume to the growing literature in this field is two-fold; first, that those taking part in the conference can study at leisure and in depth the transactions of the conference; and secondly, that those who were unable to attend might benefit from the most recent views of international experts in the diverse facets of one of the major current problems in world health. Book Alcohol Policy and the Public Good

Download or read book Alcohol Policy and the Public Good written by Griffith Edwards and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by seventeen of the world's leading researchers on alcohol problems, and produced in collaboration with WHO, this book presents a critical and highly informed perspective on alcoholism and its management. It provides an appraisal of the nature and extent of society's alcohol problems and then explores how scientific findings assist in the design of more effective policy responses. Topics covered include international trends in alcohol consumption, understanding the relationships between alcohol consumption and multiple types of harm, both as regards individual drinking and population consumption. With the epidemiological evidence established, the text turns to a view of the efficacy of different types of prevention strategy, including pricing, licensing and control of access, drunk driving counter-measures, public education, and the treatment contribution. A final chapter succinctly outlines how these analyses are to assist in the making of informed policy choices.
