Book The Cambridge History of Ancient Christianity

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Ancient Christianity written by Bruce W. Longenecker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three hundred years of the common era witnessed critical developments that would become foundational for Christianity itself, as well as for the societies and later history that emerged thereafter. The concept of 'ancient Christianity,' however, along with the content that the category represents, has raised much debate. This is, in part, because within this category lie multiple forms of devotion to Jesus Christ, multiple phenomena, and multiple permutations in the formative period of Christian history. Within those multiples lie numerous contests, as varieties of Christian identity laid claim to authority and authenticity in different ways. The Cambridge History of Ancient Christianity addresses these contested areas with both nuance and clarity by reviewing, synthesizing, and critically engaging recent scholarly developments. The 27 thematic chapters, specially commissioned for this volume from an international team of scholars, also offer constructive ways forward for future research.

Download or read book Good Works in 1 Peter written by Travis B. Williams and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on recent insights from postcolonial theory and social psychology, Travis B. Williams seeks to diagnose the social strategy of good works in 1 Peter by examining how the persistent admonition to "do good" is intended to be an appropriate response to social conflict. Challenging the modern consensus, which interprets the epistle's good works language as an attempt to accommodate Greco-Roman society and thereby to lessen social hostility, the author demonstrates that the exhortation to "do good" envisages a pattern of conduct which stands opposed to popular values. The Petrine author appropriates terminology that was commonly associated with wealth and social privilege and reinscribes it with a new meaning in order to provide his marginalized readers with an alternative vision of reality, one in which the honor and approval so valued in society is finally available to them. The good works theme thus articulates a competing discourse which challenges dominant social structures and the hegemonic ideology which underlies them.

Book A Structural Commentary on the So Called Antilegomena

Download or read book A Structural Commentary on the So Called Antilegomena written by Kalina Wojciechowska and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most commentators view the Epistle of Jude as a parenetic text. The commentary "Expecting for the Mercy" highlights its soteriological and Christological contents. This has been possible by taking a structural approach to the text and showing that its structure is chiastic, with Jude 14–15 at its centre – a description of the eschatological judgment foretold from the beginning of the world. The judgment is seen primarily as a time to show mercy to the faithful. Knowing this, the believers should also show mercy to the straying. Placing Jude 14–15 at the centre of the theological reflection has allowed us to reveal the hermeneutic perspective applied to interpret apocalyptic texts. The narrator interprets this kind of texts from the Christocentric angle, just like all other writings belonging to the Jewish tradition. In addition, he uses typology and the pesher method. The commentary is ecumenical, taking into account both Catholic and Lutheran perspectives.

Book 1 Peter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter R. Rodgers
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2017-09-11
  • ISBN : 1532605986
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book 1 Peter written by Peter R. Rodgers and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a different kind of commentary. Rather than being the work of one or two individual scholars, it is the result of the collaboration of twenty-one contributors, and others who assisted at all stages of production. The first letter of Peter itself appears to be the product of collaboration of early Christian leaders who sought to encourage those who were suffering for the name of Christ. Christians in today’s world are faced with the same challenge, and we trust that this collaborative commentary will encourage them as they seek to follow in the steps of Christ.

Book Women and Worship at Corinth

Download or read book Women and Worship at Corinth written by Lucy Peppiatt and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's arguments in 1 Corinthians 11-14 - from the role of women in public worship, to the value of speaking in tongues and prophecy for the unbeliever - have long posed challenges to the lay reader and scholar. Despite numerous explanations offeredover the years, these passages remain marked by inconsistencies, contradictions, and puzzles. Lucy Peppiatt offers an interpretation in which she proposes that Paul was in conversation with the Corinthian male leadership concerning their domineering, superior and selfish practices, which included coercing women to wear head coverings, lording it over the 'have-nots' at the Lord's Supper, and ordering married women to keep quiet in church. Peppiatt's bold arguments not only bring internal coherence to the text, but also paint a picture of the apostle gripped by a vision for a new humanity 'in the Lord', resulting in his refusal to compromise with the traditional views of his own society. Instead, Paul tells the Corinthians to become morelike Christ, to make 'love' their aim, and to restore dignity and honour to women, outsiders, and the poor.
