Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Comparative Neurology, Vol. 26 I. In a recent paper by Coghill ('14) exception is taken to the view held by Herrick ('08), Sheldon ('09), Cole ('10), and Parker ('12), that there is in vertebrates a set of receptors (free nerve terminations) which are responsible for reactions to rather high concentrations of chemicals when applied to moist peripheral surfaces. The theoretical significance attached to this 'common chemical sense' (Parker, '12) makes it appropriate to bring forward certain facts which may to some extent serve to clear up the situation. The evidence adduced by Coghill is this: that in Amblystoma larvae, before the establishment of the definitive nervous system, tactile and chemical irritability appear concomitantly and, so far as studied, remain completely parallel in development; and that if larvae be placed in irritating solutions of hydrochloric acid (as dilute as 10,000), the epithelial cells become visibly disrupted, the reaction of the larvae being correlated with the disintegration of the skin and a gradual disappearance of reaction to tactile stimuli. His conclusion, that there is not present in the skin any normal irritability to acid, is probably correct for the larvae experimented upon; but it by no means follows that the same conditions obtain in the adult. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1916-1917, Vol. 27 It was not to be in physics that she was to do her intellectual life work, however, but in the zoological side of biology. The teaching staff in zoology and comparative anatomy at that time was presided over by Prof. Burt G. Wilder for the vertebrate side, and Prof. J. H. Comstock for the invertebrates, in which entomology was the major interest. She took all the courses Offered by the two departments. In 1881 occurred her marriage to Asst. Prof. Simon Henry Gage. This gave opportunity for work and investigation in biology. She made the most of her chance, entering at once with full enthusiasm into the work of her husband, making drawings for his papers, and wall diagrams for his courses, and many also for Professor Wilder's courses. But the naturally independent mind could not long be satisfied as a mere helper; there was a desire to undertake some original work on her own account. Table 1 contains the material Used for the sagittal and frontal sections and table 2 that for the horizontal sections. Comparing the body measurements of this series with those given in table 85 in The Rat (donaldson, it is found that the average values for my material by groups correspond fairly well with the table values. Download or read book Journal of Comparative Neurology Vol 32 written by Henry H. Donaldson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Comparative Neurology, Vol. 32: August, 1920 February, 1921 On the disappearance of the layer of external granule cells I have reviewed the work of Vignal ('89), Berliner ('05), Biach ('09), Lowy ('10), Takasu ('05) and Addison ('11), and I have verified their conclusions by a study of a number of cases of human cerebella. For the relative thicknesses of the molecular, internal granular, and fiber layers, I have reviewed the work of Engel ('63), Krohn ('92), and Roncoroni ('05) and I have added some original measurements. Material for satisfactory measurements of the growth in size of the Purkinje cells has not been available, but I have made a few measurements on such cases as I could obtain. I have counted the Purkinje cells in two areas of both hemispheres of sixty-three cerebella from negroes, whites, and mulattoes of both sexes and of ages ranging from twelve to ninety-two years, and have compared these results with those already reported. On the growth and degeneration of the myelin sheath I have reviewed the work of Engel ('63), Lui ('94), de Sanctis ('98), Berliner ('05) and Lowy ('10). Finally I have studied the degeneration of the cells of the dentate nucleus in senescence. Many of the papers discussed are, it is true, rather old, but I have felt justified in bringing these various data together in order to get a general view of the different changes in the cerebellum during life and of the relation of these to variations to functional efficiency. The Weight Of The Cerebellum Perfectly satisfactory weights for the human cerebellum during the early stages of growth are not available, and hospital material probably gives results which are below the average for the population at large. It is consequently not surprising that the weights recorded by different observers show more or less variation. Book Journal of Comparative Neurology 1921 Vol 33 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1921, Vol. 33 Only a relatively small portion of the neural crest in the head is involved in the formation of cerebral ganglia. In the urodeles the neural crest forms in the anterior head region an almost continuous sheet of mesenchyme, lying lateral to the axial mesoderm which is derived from the endoderm, and is interrupted for a time by the olfactory bulb and optic stalks only. In the region of the mandibular and branchial bars, the neural crest migrates ventrally into these bars to the extreme ventral level of the body and is prevented from forming a junction with the crest of the opposite side by the presence of the heart and ventral aorta. The possibility of determining the fate of neural crest cells that do not enter into the composition of cerebral ganglia depends upon conditions that exist in some types and are apparently absent in others. It is the almost unanimous opinion of workers that it is extremely difficult and often impossible to determine the fate of all neural crest cells in the anterior head region. In the branchial region of the lower vertebrates particularly, the situation is very different. A number of reliable workers have given detailed descriptions of the fate of the neural crest cells and of the manner in which they enter into the composition of structures usually considered as mesodermal in origin. As to the migration of the neural crest beyond ganglion-forming regions in all vertebrates, there is apparently little doubt. In the urodeles the determination of the extent of the migration of the neural crest and the differentiation of the neural crest and its derivatives from those of the endoderm are comparatively easy except in the anterior region. The contrast between the large, heavily yolk-laden, light staining endoderm cells and their derivatives on one hand and the smaller, dark staining, pigmented, slightly yolk-laden ectoderm cells and their derivatives on the other hand is very striking. In addition to these distinctions based upon size of cells, staining reaction, pigmentation, and number of granules, there is also an actual difference in the size of yolk granules carried by endoderm cells as compared with those carried by ectoderm cells, those carried by endoderm cells being larger.
