Exclusive of ordinary items of receipt and expenditure, the net result for the year 1920 shows that the outgoings (including the extension of the Journal, with corresponding increase in postage and stationery, Local Section expenses and increased Library Grant) have not seriously exceeded the income for the year. Last ses sion the course was raised to a standard four-year course and the School was listed upon the State accredited column This year we attained a still higher standard and were notified last November that we had been accredited on the list of the Southern Accredited Schools of the Association of Southern Col leges. This is an enviable position, and one that we wish to maintain. But our physical equipment must increase also if we hope to stay in the Southern Acc'redited list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1921-1922 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Seventh and Thirty-Eight Annual Meetings: At New Haven, February 15 and 16, 1921, and New Haven, February 21 and 22, 1922 The Secretary notified me just recently that it would be necessary for me to make an address before the Society here, and I asked him particularly what he wanted me to say. He reminded me of the story that I had heard somewhere about someone who had compiled an address and intended to read it in the usual manner. He said it should be similar to a woman's skirt - short enough to retain inter est, long enough to cover the subject. I told the Secretary I didn't think an address from me would help in any way and I would like to signify my intention of continuing my interest in the Society, but I. Don't think there is anything that tires one so as being chosen to lead, no matter how poor that leadership may be. It certainly creates an interest to one in the Society, and I hope you may all have the pleasure of being appointed some time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings, 1920, Vol. 1 The idea of holding, under the auspices of the Bhandar-kar Oriental Research Institute, a Conference of Orientalists in India, Burma and Ceylon, - an idea which had been in the minds of the promoters of the Institute since its very foundation-, took material shape in the following resolution of the Executive Board of the Institute, passed on the 12th of December 1918. "That it is desirable to hold a Conference of Orientalists in India, if possible, in Poona, in the month of May (1919) and that with that view, correspondence be opened with eminent scholars in India, requesting them to communicate to the Secretary their opinions on the subject in about a month's time." The Secretary, accordingly, about the middle of January 1919, addressed the following letter to about twenty-five prominent Orientalists in India: - ''Dear Sir, The Executive Board of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute thinks it desirable to hold an All-India Conference of Orientalists at Poona, if possible in the month of May 1919. This would be the first Conference of its kind in India, and it will be repeated periodically at different centres. The necessity and utility of such a Conference need not he emphasised. You are probably aware that, in the Conference of Orientalists Summoned at Simla by the Hon. Sir Harcourt Butler in July 1911, Dr. Vogel had laid before the scholars assembled, a plan for holding an Oriental Congress in India (lide the Report of the Conference of Orientalists. including Museums and Archaeology, held at Simla in 1911. Book The Museum Journal 1921 Vol 12 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Museum Journal 1921 Vol 12 Classic Reprint written by Pennsylvania University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Museum Journal, 1921, Vol. 12 It will soon be one hundred and fifty years since Captain James Cook was killed in Hawaii, in the group Of islands in the Pacific that he discovered on his last voyage. His death took place in 1779 and the Tapa Book bears the date 1787. Although the author makes no reference to himself at all, it is clear enough that he was a man of firm character, large intelligence, pronounced Opinions, catholic tastes and deep sympathies. It is also a fact that although he is sometimes ungrammatical his use of the English language is picturesque, forceful and full of charm. To those who knew him he must have been an attractive personality with a versatile and entertaining mind, but there is no clue to his identity. The next question that presents itself has reference to the identity of the hero of the Dedication. He must have been a great man and a public figure. Mr. Hall suggests with entire plausibility that the hero was Warren Hastings whose impeachment was pending at the time the Dedication was written. Indeed Mr. Hall succeeds in showing that the man referred to could be no other than Warren Hastings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University Record, 1921, Vol. 7 In lieu of the usual Convocation address it has become the custom at the December Convocation to have a report by the President of the University covering in brief form the situation at the current time. This is, in many senses, a home Convocation, and the report is adapted, therefore, to the interest and information of members of the University. That post-war conditions in educational institutions are becoming nearly normal is evident throughout the entire country. This is made apparent by many factors, and among them by the record of attendance of students. The total registration during the quarter just closing is as against for the Autumn Quarter of. 1919. The gain is not large but is rather more than was expected under the present business and social conditions. In this connection it may be interesting to record the total attendance for several years past, Showing the effect of war on the University and the restoration of normal conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crimson and Grey, 1921, Vol. 6 A preface is usually a long, dry article at the beginning of a text book, the fore-runner of the real battle of phrases. Now, this preface is intended to be neither long nor dry. This year's Crimson and Grey is a student publication and must be read as such If the writer of a narrative loses his story, if a drawing is out of proportion, or if the poems have a limp in their feet, recall that the said writer was probably recalled from his ideal compo-sing to the cruel plane of facts in the school-room by some irate teacher who could not know she was interrupting a masterpiece.
