Book excerpt: Le Journal de Michelet s'étend de 1828 à 1874, du premier voyage hors de France à la mort de l'historien. En même temps qu'il le tenait, Michelet composait une ouvre immense. En fait, il s'imposait ainsi une discipline de conscience qui lui permettait de ne pas devenir l'esclave de son métier. Il contrôlait sa vie au jour le jour. Il y mettait de l'ordre, choisissant parmi les faits quotidiens ceux qui méritaient de rester dans sa mémoire. La lecture du Journal révèle bien l'esprit méthodique de Michelet, entraîné, mais non subjugué par ses inspirations, capable de tenir à la fois le registre de ses dépenses et celui de ses émotions, administrant avec une égale fermeté sa maison, son ouvre et son génie, consignant actes et impressions comme s'il devait, un jour, en rendre compte. Tout en dressant ainsi le procès-verbal de son existence, Michelet préparait quelque nouveau livre, recherchant des idées, les mettant à l'épreuve. Comme il l'avait prévu au moment de le commencer, le Journal recueillit ses pensées aussi bien que ses sentiments. S'y accumulèrent des anecdotes, des remarques pittoresques, des formules notées en vue de l'ouvre future. La vivacité des récits de l'Histoire de France, des descriptions de La Mer et de La Montagne tient à l'exactitude des détails vrais observés pendant un voyage ou relevés au cours d'une lecture. Le tableau de la vie ouvrière que l'on admire dans Le Peuple est esquissé dans la relation des voyages à Lyon et en Normandie. On sait que la plupart des livres de Michelet ont été écrits très vite : c'est qu'ils avaient longuement mûri dans la retraite du Journal. Le Journal ne s'écourte que dans les périodes, fréquentes, il est vrai, de grand travail. Il reprend de l'ampleur dès que Michelet retrouve le loisir de s'y confier. On découvre alors ce qu'est le génie littéraire : Michelet vivait la plume à la main. On sera surpris du nombre de pages rédigées au cours de certains voyages. Transporté sur de mauvais chemins où le cahotaient d'inconfortables voitures, accueilli dans de rudes auberges, Michelet n'interrompait jamais son Journal. La fatigue, de son propre aveu, brisait ses membres ; mais elle épargnait en lui le don d'écrire, l'art de choisir les mots qui allaient fixer les images de la journée dans leur fraîcheur. Ce volume est précédé d'une riche et passionnante étude de Paul Viallaneix, qui a reconstitué et annoté le texte du Journal.

Book excerpt: The "July Revolution" of 1830 in France overthrew the King, brought down the Bourbon dynasty, and ended the fifteen-year era known as the Restoration. lt established the "July Monarchy" of Louis-Philippe, citizen King of the Hause of Orleans, a regime also destined for extinction eighteen years later. Although the 1848 revolt is of somewhat greater domestic political importance and considerably greater in its European scope and its social implications, the July Revolution of 1830 should not be relegated to the lower Ievels of historical consciousness. Yet, in modern times, even in France, relatively few works have been published concerning either the Restoration or the revolution which terminated it. New interpretations, such as the excellent works of Bertier de Sauvigny and David Pinkney have awakened the enthusiasm of scholars; but in general, the intrinsic importance of this period has been slighted for nearly a century. There are reasons for this inattention: At first glance, the era seems retrograde, born of a conservative reaction; and placid - it falls between Napoleon's giant earthquake on one side, and on the other, the dynamics of European nationalism, imperialism, and the class struggle. But the Restoration was neither archaic nor calm. lt was, for all its manifest anachronisms, an age of rapid political, cultural, and social growth. France, during these years, was maturing and ripening toward nationhood - and toward the collision of many complex forces, culminating in revolution.

Book excerpt: This book explores the new types of political organization that emerged in Western Europe and the United States during the nineteenth century, from popular meetings to single-issue organizations and political parties. The development of these has often been used to demonstrate a movement towards democratic representation or political institutionalization. This volume challenges the idea that the development of ‘democracy’ is a story of rise and progress at all. It is rather a story of continuous but never completely satisfying attempts of interpreting the rule of the people. Taking the perspective of nineteenth-century organizers as its point of departure, this study shows that contemporaries hardly distinguished between petitioning, meeting and association. The attraction of organizing was that it promised representation, accountability and popular participation. Only in the twentieth century did parties reliable partners for the state in averting revolution, managing the unpredictable effects of universal suffrage, and reforming society. This collection analyzes them in their earliest stage, as just one of several types of civil society organizations, that did not differ that much from each other. The promise of organization, and the experiments that resulted from it, deeply impacted modern politics.
