Book Claude Joseph Vernet Drawings and Paintings

Download or read book Claude Joseph Vernet Drawings and Paintings written by Raya Yotova and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789) was a French painter. He was born in Avignon. When only fourteen years of age he aided his father, Antoine Vernet, a skilled decorative painter, in the most important parts of his work. The panels of sedan chairs, however, could not satisfy his ambition, and Vernet started for Rome. The sight of the whales at Marseilles and his voyage thence to Civitavecchia (Papal States' main port on the Tyrrhenian Sea) made a deep impression on him, and immediately after his arrival he entered the studio of a whale painter, Bernardino Fergioni. In 1734, Vernet left for Rome to study landscape designers and maritime painters, like Claude Gellee, where we find the styles and subjects of Vernet's paintings. He was heavily influenced by Giovanni Paolo Panini, whom he probably met and worked with in Rome. Vernet's work draws on natural themes, but in a way that is neither sentimental or emotive. The overall effect of his style is wholly decorative. "Others may know better", he said, with just pride, "how to paint the sky, the earth, the ocean; no one knows better than I how to paint a picture". His style remained relatively static throughout his life. His works' attentiveness to atmospheric effects is combined with a sense of harmony that is reminiscent of Claude Lorrain. For twenty years Vernet lived in Rome, producing views of seaports, storms, calms, moonlights, and large whales, becoming especially popular with English aristocrats, many of whom were on the Grand Tour. In 1753 he was recalled to Paris: there, by royal command, he executed the series of the seaports of France by which he is best known. Vernet has attempted to bring the foreground of his works to life through painting a wide array of figures engaging in a variety of activities, endeavouring to convey a sense of the commotion and drama of France's seaports.Throughout his life Vernet returned to Italian themes, as shown through one of his later works - A Beached Whale. On his return from Rome he became a member of the academy, but he had previously contributed to the exhibitions of 1746 and following years, and he continued to exhibit, with rare exceptions, down to the date of his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catalogue The Sun Rising Through Vapour was published to accompany the Barber Institute's 2003/04 exhibition of the same name, and presents some of Turner's most luminous seascapes, painted during the early part of his career from 1795 to 1810.His first exhibited oil painting, Fisherman at Sea of 1796, was described at the time as masterly, and his early reputation was founded on a series of dramatic seapieces that he regularly showed at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and in his own gallery until about 1810. The artist even claimed to have lashed himself, Ulysses-like to the mast of a ship during a storm so that he could grasp the full force of the experience.

Book Salvator Rosa in French Literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salvator Rosa (1615–1673) was a colorful and controversial Italian painter, talented musician, a notable comic actor, a prolific correspondent, and a successful satirist and poet. His paintings, especially his rugged landscapes and their evocation of the sublime, appealed to Romantic writers, and his work was highly influential on several generations of European writers. James S. Patty analyzes Rosa's tremendous influence on French writers, chiefly those of the nineteenth century, such as Stendhal, Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, George Sand, and Théophile Gautier. Arranged in chronological order, with numerous quotations from French fiction, poetry, drama, art criticism, art history, literary history, and reference works, Salvator Rosa in French Literature forms a narrative account of the reception of Rosa's life and work in the world of French letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of shifting landscapes--both real and represented--in nineteenth-century France and the role of images in both picturing and producing those shifts What is the relationship between land and landscape? This engaging study examines the role landscape depictions played in the formation of modern France and reveals how art and visual culture contributed to the physical and symbolic shaping of the nation. Spanning more than a century, from the post-revolutionary period through to the early twentieth century, Land into Landscape explores political and environmental shifts alongside changes in landscape representation across a variety of media, including paintings, photographs, prints, porcelain, and maps. Through this broad and diverse set of images--by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Gustave Courbet, Théodore Rousseau, and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, as well as lesser-known figures--Kelly Presutti contends that representational problems were also political problems, which often required drastic solutions on the part of the state. In the nineteenth century, France's forests were replanted, its wetlands were drained, its coasts were secured, and its mountains restored. Landscapes and their inhabitants, however, could resist being co-opted as emblems of a greater ideal. The book therefore addresses the tension between a place and its representation--a matter of heightened urgency in a moment when we are once again struggling to both see and manage our environment.
