Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World War SeriesV1 The Guns of Europe (1915)The Guns of Europe, is the first of three connected romances, of which The Forest of Swords and The Hosts of the Air, are to be respectively the second and third, dealing with the world war in Europe. It was the singular fortune of the author to be present at the beginning of this, the most gigantic struggle in the history of our globe. He was in Vienna the day Austria-Hungary declared war upon Servia, thus setting the torch that lighted the general conflagration. Returning westward, he reached Munich the day Germany declared war upon Russia. He remained in Germany nearly a month, having witnessed in turn the Austrian and German mobilizations, and then arrived in England in time to see the gathering of the British Empire's armed hosts.V2 The Forest of Swords, a story of Paris and the Marne (1915)"The Forest of Swords, while an independent story, based upon the World War, continues the fortunes of John Scott, Philip Lannes, and their friends who have appeared already in The Guns of Europe." As was stated in the first volume, the author was in Austria and Germany for a month after the war began, and then went to England. He saw the arrival of the Emperor, Francis Joseph, in Vienna, the first striking event in the gigantic struggle, and witnessed the mobilization of their armies by three great nations.V3 The Hosts of the Air, the story of a quest in the Great War (1915)The Hosts of the Air is the third and concluding volume of the World War Series, of which The Forest of Swords, and The Guns of Europe were the predecessors. It deals primarily with the love story of John Scott and Julie Lannes, but all the characters of the earlier books reappear in this romance also.

Book excerpt: An epic tale of the war between the States This is volume four-incorporating the two novels The Shades of the Wilderness & The Tree of Appomattox, the seventh and eighth novels of a series of eight adventures which follow the momentous events, campaigns and battles of the great American Civil War between the Northern and Southern states. The central characters of the story are Harry Kenton-an officer in the Confederate Army and his cousin Dick Mason a young officer in a similar position fighting within the Union ranks. The narrative of the whole war is charted through the action which embraces many actual players in the real conflict. Beginning with First Bull Run and climaxing at Appomattox each novel tells the story from an alternate perspective-from the ranks of the Blue and then the Grey as the saga unfolds. Altsheler wrote another Civil War novel, Before the Dawn, concerning the fall of Richmond told from a Confederate perspective. Although this story is not strictly part of the series Leonaur have offered it as part of its five volume, nine novel collection of the author's Civil War adventures for collectors and readers in complementing designs and soft cover or hard cover.

This book was released on 2014-06-08 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French and Indian War Series consists of six volume: 1. The Hunters of the Hills This is the first volume of a series dealing with the great struggle of France and England and their colonies for dominion in North America, culminating with the fall of Quebec. It is largely concerned with the Iroquois, the mighty league known in their own language as the Hodenosaunee, for the favor of which both French and English were high bidders. Altsheler notes that he consulted many authorities, and was not conscious of any historical error. 2. The Shadow of the North "The Shadow of the North," while an independent story, in itself, is also the second volume of the Great French and Indian War series which began with "The Hunters of the Hills." All the important characters of the first romance reappear in the second. 3. "The Rulers of the Lakes" Young Robert Lennox and his friend Tayoga undertake a dangerous trip through the wilderness to warn Fort Refuge of the approach of hostile forces. The story concludes with the battle of Lake George. The book is set almost completely in the wilderness, and provides an accurate picture of Iroquois life and warfare. The Rulers of the Lakes is a complete story, but it is also the third volume of the French and Indian War Series, following The Hunters of the Hills and The Shadow of the North. Robert Lennox, Tayoga, Willet, and all the important characters in the earlier romances reappear. 4. The Masters of the Peaks "The Masters of the Peaks" is a story of the great north woods and the fourth volume of the French and Indian War Series. Tayoga, Willet, and all the other important characters of the earlier romances reappear 5. The Lords of the Wild A Story of the Old New York Border with the backdrop of the French and Indian War: The Lords of the Wild is a complete story, following The Hunters of the Hills, The Shadow of the North, The Rulers of the Lakes, and The Masters of the Peaks. Robert Lennox, Tayoga, Willet, St. Luc, Tandakora and all the principal characters of the earlier volumes reappear. 6. The Sun o f Quebec The mystery in the life of Robert Lennox, the central figure in all of the romances, is solved in this sixth and closing volume of the French and Indian War Series.

A tongue of fire leaped from one of the batteries, followed by a gush of smoke, and a round shot whistled over the Star of the West. A tremendous shout came from the crowd, then it was silent, while that tongue of flame leaped a second time from the mouth of a cannon. Harry saw the water spring up, a spire of white foam, near the steamer, and a moment later a third shot clipped the water close by. He did not know whether the gunners were firing directly at the vessel or merely meant to warn her that she came nearer at her peril, but in any event, the effect was the same. South Carolina with her cannon was warning a foreign ship, the ship of an enemy, to keep away. The Star of the West slowed down and stopped. Then another shout, more tremendous than ever, a shout of triumph, came from the crowd, but Harry felt a chill strike to his heart. Young St. Clair, too, was silent and Harry saw a shadow on his face. He looked for Shepard, but he was gone and the boy had not heard him go. "It is all over," said St. Clair, with the certainty of prophecy. "The cannon have spoken and it is war.
