This book contains his complete and famous trilogy about the bloody birth of the Republic of Texas. He was a prolific writer, and produced fifty-one novels and at least fifty-three short stories. Thirty-two of his novels were part of his seven series: The Civil War Series (8 volumes)The French and Indian War Series (6 volumes)The Gold Series (2 volumes)The Great West Series (2 volumes)The Texan Series (3 volumes)The World War Series (3 volumes)The Young Trailers Series (8 volumes)Although each of the thirty-two novels constitutes an independent story, Altsheler suggested a reading order for each series (i.e., he numbered the volumes). The remaining nineteen novels can be read in any order. [Note, however, that A Knight of Philadelphia was later expanded through the addition of nineteen chapters and some minor tweaks to become Mr. Altsheler's novel In Hostile Red.]The short stories, of course, can be read in any order. However, some readers might prefer to read them in the order in which they were published. The short story list below is displayed in chronological order with the publication dates shown alongside the titles.Early life and educationAltsheler was born in Three Springs, Hart County, Kentucky, to Joseph and Louise (née Snoddy) Altsheler. He attended Liberty College in Glasgow, Kentucky, before entering Vanderbilt University.CareerIn 1885, he took a job at the Louisville Courier-Journal as a reporter and later worked as an editor. Due to a lack of suitable stories, he began writing children's stories for the magazine.Personal lifeAltsheler married Sarah Boles on May 30, 1888; they had one son, Sidney.Altsheler and his family were in Germany in 1914 when World War I began, and they were forced to remain in Germany for a time. The hardships the Altshelers endured in returning to the U.S. damaged Altsheler's health and rendered him a semi-invalid until his death. Upon returning to the U.S., he wrote The World War Series of books based on his ordeal.DeathAltsheler died in New York City on June 5, 1919, aged 57; his obituary appeared in The Evening World, on June 6, 1919. Book excerpt: "The Texan Triumph" is the final volume of Joseph Altsheler's 3-volume "Texan Series." Each volume is a complete story in itself, and is based on the Texan struggle for liberty against the power of Mexico. This revolution, epic in its nature, and crowded with heroism and great events, divides itself naturally into three parts. The first part, described in "The Texan Star," begins in Mexico with the treacherous imprisonment of Austin, the Texan leader, the rise of Santa Anna and his attempt, through bad faith, to disarm the Texans and leave them powerless before the Indians. It culminates in the rebellion of the Texans, and their capture, in the face of great odds, of San Antonio, the seat of the Mexican power in the north. The second part, entitled "The Texan Scouts," is the coming of Santa Anna with an overwhelming force, the fall of the Alamo, the massacre of Goliad and the dark days of Texas. Yet the period of gloom is relieved by the last stand of Crockett, Bowie, and their famous comrades. The third part is described here in "The Texan Triumph." It shows the coming of light in the darkness, Houston's crowning victory at San Jacinto, and the complete victory of the Texans.

Book excerpt: A boy and a man sat in a room of a stone house in the ancient City of Mexico, capital in turn of Aztec, Spaniard and Mexican. They could see through the narrow windows masses of low buildings and tile roofs, and beyond, the swelling shape of great mountains, standing clear against the blue sky. But they had looked upon them so often that the mind took no note of the luminous spectacle. The cry of a water-seller or the occasional jingle of a spur came from the street below, but these, too, were familiar sounds, and they were no longer regarded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Altsheler's French and Indian War Series consists of six volumes: 1. The Hunters of the Hills This is the first volume of a series dealing with the great struggle of France and England and their colonies for dominion in North America, culminating with the fall of Quebec. It is largely concerned with the Iroquois, the mighty league known in their own language as the Hodenosaunee, for the favor of which both French and English were high bidders. Altsheler notes that he consulted many authorities, and was not conscious of any historical error. 2. The Shadow of the North -The Shadow of the North, - while an independent story, in itself, is also the second volume of the Great French and Indian War series which began with -The Hunters of the Hills.- All the important characters of the first romance reappear in the second. 3. The Rulers of the Lakes Young Robert Lennox and his friend Tayoga undertake a dangerous trip through the wilderness to warn Fort Refuge of the approach of hostile forces. The story concludes with the battle of Lake George. The book is set almost completely in the wilderness, and provides an accurate picture of Iroquois life and warfare. The Rulers of the Lakes is a complete story, but it is also the third volume of the French and Indian War Series, following The Hunters of the Hills and The Shadow of the North. Robert Lennox, Tayoga, Willet, and all the important characters in the earlier romances reappear. 4. The Masters of the Peaks -The Masters of the Peaks- is a story of the great north woods and the fourth volume of the French and Indian War Series. Tayoga, Willet, and all the other important characters of the earlier romances reappear 5. The Lords of the Wild A Story of the Old New York Border with the backdrop of the French and Indian War: The Lords of the Wild is a complete story, following The Hunters of the Hills, The Shadow of the North, The Rulers of the Lakes, and The Masters of the Peaks. Robert Lennox, Tayoga, Willet, St. Luc, Tandakora and all the principal characters of the earlier volumes reappear. 6. The Sun of Quebec The mystery in the life of Robert Lennox, the central figure in all of the romances, is solved in this sixth and closing volume of the French and Indian War Series.
