Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miscellaneous Works of Joseph Addison There is certainly no place in the world where a man may travel with greater pleasure and ad vantage than in Italy. One finds something more particular in the face of the country, and more as tonishing in the works of nature, than can be met with in any other part of Europe. It is the great school of music and painting, and contains in it all the noblest productions of statuary and architecture, both ancient and modern. It abounds with cabinets of curiosities, and vast collections of all kinds of antiquities. N 0 other country in the world has such a variety of governments, that are so difi'erent in their constitutions, and so refined in their politics. There is scarce any part of the nation that is not famous in history, nor so much as a mountain or river that has not been the scene of some extra ordinary action. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joseph Addison When Addison was twenty-seven years old he was still undecided as to his choice of a profession. His father very much desired that he should take orders in the Church of England. He seems himself at one time to have regarded a clerical life, not as his duty, but as his destiny marked out by circumstances. -his Opinions were orthodox; his life, if not spiritual, was moral; his college had rich. Livings in its gift; his father had influence in the Church; why, then, should he hesitate Among churchmen little was thought in those times of the need of a divine call to the ministry. Hence he had no scruples on that point. With him the question was, not' what God called him to do, but in which profession, literature or the ministry, could he hope to succeed best? Probably his natural shyness disinclined him to at tempt the latter, while the success which followed his first. Poetical publications inclined him to the former. Thus he stood in life's great highway, an undecided man, waiting, not for Providence, but for human events, to direct his course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Joseph Addison, Vol. 1 of 2 The present work was undertaken from the desire of supplying what appeared a real deficiency in our literature. While the lives of Pope and Swift had been written and rewritten with unwearied research and distinguished ability; while Dryden had in recent times been made the object of a detailed and interesting biography, what accounts did we possess of a contemporary inferior to none of these in genius or in fame, and certainly superior to them all in the purity, amenity and moral tendency of his writings, as well as in the virtues of his life? What records had we of Addison? Two prefaces; that of Tickell to the general edition of his works, that of Johnson to his poetry included in the collection of the English poets! Book Selections From the Works of Joseph Addison

Download or read book Selections From the Works of Joseph Addison written by Edward Bliss Reed and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Works of Joseph Addison: Edited With an Introduction and Notes This book has been prepared for the use of those second year men at Yale College who are pursuing a course in the history of English literature. While the selections show Addison's work as a whole, his verse as well as his prose, they are not designed for the special student of Eighteenth century writings. The text is that of Tickell's 1721 edition. This has been chosen because it represents Addison's final revision of his work. This text has been carefully collated with the first editions of the poems, and with the original sheets of the Tatler and the Spectator. The variants are printed at the bottom of each page. In many cases they are unimportant, but often they throw light both on Addison's method of composition and his thought, and therefore they should be of value to the teacher. The original sheets of the Freeholder are rare. They are not to be found in the British Museum nor in the Bodleian; the Yale library has the first twenty issues only. The Freeholder papers have therefore been collated with the first collected edition, 1716. Throughout these selections the spelling has been modernized and the original capitals and italics have not been reproduced. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of the Right Honourable Joseph Addison, Vol. 6 of 6 Same time gave great offence to a Northumberland squire, whom he threatened to excommunicate, if he did not give up to him the church-lands, which his family had usurped ever since the reformation. In short, every man had cut out a place for himself in his own thoughts; so that I could reckon up in our little army, two or three lord-treasurers, half a dozen secretaries of state, and at least a score of lords-justices in Eyre, for each side of Trent. We pursued our march through several villages, which we drank dry, -making proclamation at our entrance, in the name of James the third, against -all concealments of ale or brandy. Being very much fatigued with the action of a whole week, it was agreed to rest on Sunday, when we heard a most excellent sermon. Our chaplain insisted principally upon two heads. Under the first he proved to us, that the breach of public oaths is no perjury; and under the second, expounded to us the nature of non-resistance; which might be interpreted from the Hebrew, to signify either loyalty or rebellion, according as the sovereign bestow ed his favours and preferments. He concluded with exhorting us, in a most pathetic manner, to purge the land by wholesome severities, and to propagate sound principles by fire and sword. We set forward the next day, towards our friends at Kelso but by the way had like to have lost our general, and some of our most ao tive officers. For a fox unluckily crossing the road, drew off a considerable detachment, who clapped spurs to their horses, and pursued him with whoops and hal loos, till we had lost sight of them. A covey of par tridges springing in our front, put our infantry into disorder on the same day. It was not long after this, that we were joined by our friends from the other side of the Frith. Upon the junction of the two corps, our spies brought us word, that they discovered a great cloud of dust at some distance; upon which we sent out a party to reconnoitre. They returned to us with in telli ence, that the dust was raised by a great drove of blac cattle. This news was not a little welcome to us.
