Book excerpt: Jorge de Sena (1919-1978) was regarded by many as not only the premier contemporary poet of Portugal, but also the third of all time after Camões and Pessoa. He published more than a hundred books in a wide range of genres that included cultural studies, literary theory, essay, translation, criticism, drama, fiction, and poetry. His diverse formal training included Portugal's naval academy, a Licentiate in civil engineering from the University of Oporto, and a Ph.D. in literature from the University of São Paulo. He taught at two universities in Brazil before coming to the United States in 1965, where he accepted a full professorship at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Then in 1970, he moved to the University of California at Santa Barbara where he was chair of two departments: Spanish and Portuguese, and Comparative Literature.Jorge de Sena: 100 Poems and More contains representative poems from each of his fourteen volumes of poetry, in both the original Portuguese as well as in English translation. There is also a useful introductory study, notes on each book of poetry, photographs, and an informative forward by his wife Mécia on Sena's long association with Anglo-American letters. The appendix contains a bibliographic listing of all of Sena's publications and two studies: a personal reminiscence of his teaching style and mentoring while a professor in the United States, and an analysis of some of his most significant moral teachings. Also provided is a reference to access a color video of Jorge de Sena reading his own poetry that includes a photo-biographical introduction and an interview.

It tackles the main theoretical issues, identifies a significant body of critical writing on the relationship between anthologies, literary history and the canon, and proposes an approach that might be designated Descriptive Anthology Studies. The author aims to achieve a full understanding of the role of anthologies in the literary polysystem. Moreover, this study considers anthologies published in Portugal in the early years of the twentieth-century, the influential figures who made them, the works they selected, and who read them. It also focuses on the principal publishing houses of the 1940s and 50s, and how their literary directors shaped public taste and promoted intercultural transfer. The author reveals tensions between conservative, nostalgic anthologies that promote an idyllic vision of rural Portugal, and collections of poems that question and challenge the status quo, whether in respect of the colonial wars or repressed female sexuality. The last part of the book explores anthology production in the period following the Revolution of 1974, observing the co-existence of traditional anthologising activity with new trends and innovations, and noting the role of women, both as anthologists and anthology items.

These were not mere pseudonyms, but what Pessoa termed 'heteronyms,' fully realized identities possessed not only of wildly divergent writing styles and opinions, but also of detailed biographies. In many cases, their independent existences extended to their publication of letters and critical readings of each other's works (and those of Pessoa 'himself'). A guiding motif is Pessoa's own Be as plural as the universe. In leading the reader through the poet's published literary work, Jerónimo Pizarro allows an intimate perspective, alongside an academic one, to better understand the workings of Pessoa's mind and life. Discussion centres on the dilemmas an editor faces when editing posthumously. A prime question revolves around the genesis of Pessoa's heteronyms and orthonyms. Understanding is revealed by a critical perspective on the unity that exists in all of Pessoa's literary work. Interpretations of the poems; explanation of the profundity of The Book of Disquiet; and his isms of Paulism, Caeirism, Intersectionism and Cessationism, are discussed and analysed. The issue of Pessoa's astrological predictions his birth year and the effects of this event on Portuguese national history is debated. A chapter is devoted to the effect that translating Omar Khayyám's Rubáiyát had on the poet. The work contains eleven texts written by Pessoa in English (including an autobiographical note from 1935), a substantive dual language bibliography, and is highly illustrated with facsimiles of the poet's own written material. A Critical Introduction is essential reading for all scholars and students of Pessoa's literary output and life circumstances. The work has been written to appeal to cultural studies (arts and aesthetics) enthusiasts in general at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, but given the engagement of new critical material it also provides a structured resource for future research.
