Book The Cynic Enlightenment

Download or read book The Cynic Enlightenment written by Louisa Shea and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original study reveals the importance of ancient Cynicism in defining the Enlightenment and its legacy. Louisa Shea explores modernity's debt to Cynicism by examining the works of thinkers who turned to the ancient Cynics as a model for reinventing philosophy and dared to imagine an alliance between a socially engaged Enlightenment and the least respectable of early Greek philosophies. While Cynicism has always resided on the fringes of philosophy, Shea argues, it remained a vital touchstone for writers committed to social change and helped define the emerging figure of the public intellectual in the 18th century. Shea's study brings to light the rich legacy of ancient Cynicism in modern intellectual, philosophical, and literary life, both in the 18th-century works of Diderot, Rousseau, Wieland, and Sade, and in recent writings by Michel Foucault and Peter Sloterdijk. Featuring an important new perspective on both Enlightenment thought and its current scholarly reception, The Cynic Enlightenment will interest students and scholars of the Enlightenment and its intellectual legacy, 18th-century studies, literature, and philosophy.

Download or read book Swift s Angers written by Claude Rawson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Swift's angers were all too real, though Swift was temperamentally equivocal about their display. Even in his most brilliant satire, A Tale of a Tub, the aggressive vitality of the narrative is designed, for all the intensity of its sting, never to lose its cool. Yet Swift's angers are partly self-implicating, since his own temperament was close to the things he attacked, and behind his angers are deep self-divisions. Though he regarded himself as 'English' and despised the Irish 'natives' over whom the English ruled, Swift became the hero of an Irish independence he would not have desired. In this magisterial account, Claude Rawson, widely considered the leading Swift scholar of our time, brings together recent work, as well as classic earlier discussions extensively revised, offering fresh insights into Swift's bleak view of human nature, his brilliant wit, and the indignations and self-divisions of his writings and political activism.

Book excerpt: Literature as History presents a selection of specially commissioned essays by a range of key contemporary thinkers on the interdisciplinary study of literature and history. The unifying theme is the interrelationship between literary / cultural production and its historical moment. The essays in the collection are astute and exciting in terms of their engagement with ever-changing developments in critical and theoretical practice while retaining an invaluable focus on familiar and engaging texts and authors. The contributors offer a reappraisal of the nature of literary studies today, looking back over the thirty-five years of Peter Widdowson's career - a career which has coincided with the emergence of, challenges to, and reformulations of critical theory - and ask what the future holds, particularly for the interdisciplinary ways of working which Widdowson pioneered. Bringing together distinguished scholars in the interdisciplinary study of English and History, it seizes the opportunity to take stock of the current field of literary studies and to ask searching questions about its future development.

Book Voyaging in Joseph Conrad s Major Works

Download or read book Voyaging in Joseph Conrad s Major Works written by Latef S. N. Berzenji and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Conrad is one of the most intriguing and important modernist novelists and short story writers, whose writing continues to preoccupy readers. Conrad combined his unique personal background as a Polish emigre, his personal experiences and voyagings as a seaman and his literary readings with the tradition of his adopted country to produce literary works and fictions, which blended with his distinctive taste, gave the English novel a further originality and development. This study, which primarily concentrates on four of Conrad's major works - Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, “The Secret Sharer,” and The Shadow Line shows that Conrad conceives voyaging as a symbolic means, an insight and vision into the human psyche. It becomes a journey into the inner-world of man’s psychological diving into his inner world of the self in quest of truth, of self-identity, self-knowledge, and self-control.
