Book Why Johnny Doesn t Flap

Download or read book Why Johnny Doesn t Flap written by Clay Morton and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johnny is different. He is never exactly on time, he can't seem to stick to a routine and he often speaks in cryptic idioms. Johnny is neurotypical, but that's ok. A picture book with a difference, Why Johnny Doesn't Flap turns the tables on common depictions of neurological difference by drolly revealing how people who are not on the autistic spectrum are perceived by those who are. The autistic narrator's bafflement at his neurotypical friend's quirks shows that 'normal' is simply a matter of perspective.

Book Into the Closet

Download or read book Into the Closet written by Victoria Flanagan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into the Closet examines the representation of cross-dressing in a wide variety of children’s fiction, ranging from picture books and junior fiction to teen films and novels for young adults. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the different types of cross-dressing found in children’s narratives, raising a number of significant issues relating to the ideological construction of masculinity and femininity in books for younger readers. Many literary and cultural critics have studied the cultural significance of adult cross-dressing, yet although cross-dressing representations are plentiful in children’s literature and film, very little critical attention has been paid to this subject to date. Into the Closet fills this critical gap. Cross-dressing demonstrates how gender is symbolically constructed through various items of clothing and apparel. It also has the ability to deconstruct notions of problematizing the relationship between sex and gender. Into the Closet is an important book for academics, teachers, and parents because it demonstrates how cross-dressing, rather than being taboo, is frequently used in children’s literature and film as a strategy to educate (or enculturate) children about gender.

Download or read book Beyond Babar written by Sandra L. Beckett and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-08-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too often, attention is paid only to those children's novels that were written in English, with non-English-language works being passed over and neglected. Beyond Babar: The European Tradition in Children's Literature examines eleven of the most celebrated European children's novels in substantial, critical essays written by well-known international scholars. This approach provides a comprehensive discussion of the selected works from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Each essay offers a critical introduction to the text that can serve as a point of departure for literary scholars, professors of children's literature, primary and secondary school teachers, and librarians who are interested in texts that cross languages and cultures. Beyond Babar is especially meant to assist instructors of children's literature who would like to use these texts in the classroom, in order to begin to redress the English-language dominance of many children's literature courses. This volume will also be of interest to the general public, as its ultimate aim is to bring to the attention of all English-speaking readers the literature from other parts of the world, in this case from Europe. Beyond Babar helps to facilitate the border crossings of these European masterpieces of children's literature into the English-speaking world.

Seven years later, they were taken back to her home with two half-sisters and her mother’s then-boyfriend. At age sixteen, Ruth quit school, was unhappy at home, and yearned for a stable environment. She moved out and chose to live with other family members, returning to school and earning a high school diploma. Ten years later, she attended the college of her dreams and graduated with honors. In Love and Forgiveness Ruth narrates her story, a story illustrating dedication and perseverance and one that showed her there were no limits to what she could accomplish. As she was unsuccessful with two marriages, she continued to immerse herself in a world of personal and professional growth. She learned to love unconditionally, to forgive others, and to fully accept herself. In this memoir, Ruth shares how she learned the importance of a life devoted to something bigger than herself. During these transformational experiences, she found passion and fulfillment in helping others, and gratitude became her daily prayer. In the end, she received the best gift she could have asked for; The last words her mother spoke to her were: “Ruthie, I love you”.

Book Something Always Happens When You Go Sailing

Download or read book Something Always Happens When You Go Sailing written by denis lawrence and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a candid and humourous account of the author's adventures in sailing. It begins with his first experiences as a teenager with rowing boats in the North East of England. Later he describes the joys of sailing dinghies and cruisers in the South West of England. These adventures range from smooth idylic sails in good weather to a full on ship wreck in storm conditions. His tales of learning to sail expand to yacht racing on the Swan River in Perth and in the Indian Ocean, Western Australia. His lively and candid descriptions of fellow yachtsmen and women he met while sailing add wit and pathos to his abiding love of the sea. The book should appeal not only to experienced yachtsmen but also to the 'arm-chair sailor' who likes to read about sailing. The title of the book is in reference to a comment made by his wife, Anne, when their sailing dinghy sprung a leak during their sail together.
