Book excerpt: This profile of Jonathan Chapman appeared in Harper's Magazine of November 1871. It was one of the earliest, if not the first, gathering of all of the facts known about the man called Johnny Appleseed. From his own admission we have learned that he started life near Boston in 1774.The first independent record of him notes his arrival in 1801, in what is now Licking County, Ohio, with a horseload of appleseeds. He also brought with him his ardent belief in the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, and he spent the rest of his life spreading the gospel of this Christian mystic with an imaginative lending library plan. His mission had him continuously traversing western Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana planting and caring for his beloved apple trees. Johnny Appleseed died in 1847 near Fort Wayne. There is a monument to his memory in South Park, Mansfield, Ohio.

Book Johnny Appleseed and the American Orchard

Download or read book Johnny Appleseed and the American Orchard written by William Kerrigan and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at American icon Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman and the story of the apple. Johnny Appleseed and the American Orchard illuminates the meaning of Johnny "Appleseed" Chapman’s life and the environmental and cultural significance of the plant he propagated. Creating a startling new portrait of the eccentric apple tree planter, William Kerrigan carefully dissects the oral tradition of the Appleseed myth and draws upon material from archives and local historical societies across New England and the Midwest. The character of Johnny Appleseed stands apart from other frontier heroes like Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, who employed violence against Native Americans and nature to remake the West. His apple trees, nonetheless, were a central part of the agro-ecological revolution at the heart of that transformation. Yet men like Chapman, who planted trees from seed rather than grafting, ultimately came under assault from agricultural reformers who promoted commercial fruit stock and were determined to extend national markets into the West. Over the course of his life John Chapman was transformed from a colporteur of a new ecological world to a curious relic of a pre-market one. Weaving together the stories of the Old World apple in America and the life and myth of John Chapman, Johnny Appleseed and the American Orchard casts new light on both.

Book Johnny Appleseed

Download or read book Johnny Appleseed written by Howard Means and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Finally, the cliché is peeled away and the essence of this utterly American character is so revealing. John Chapman comes alive here and it is a thrilling experience to escape the specific gravity of the decades of myth” (Ken Burns). This portrait of Johnny Appleseed restores the flesh-and-blood man beneath the many myths. It captures the boldness of an iconic American and the sadness of his last years, as the frontier marched past him, ever westward. And it shows how death liberated the legend and made of Johnny a barometer of the nation’s feelings about its own heroic past and the supposed Eden it once had been. Howard Means does for America’s inner frontier what Stephen Ambrose’s Undaunted Courage did for its western one.

Book Johnny Appleseed Man and Myth

Download or read book Johnny Appleseed Man and Myth written by Robert Price and published by Gloucester, Mass. : P. Smith, 1967 [c1954]. This book was released on 1967 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Please--no apple blossoms!" protests author Robert Price, speaking of his approach to the Johnny Appleseed story. For over a quarter century Mr. Price has followed the circuitous trail of the elusive folk hero. Says the author: "Perhaps my bent for the outdoors, travel, and music shows up in this book. John Chapman's story has only recently emerged from a cloud of popular sentimentalism to become a major national myth in which 'Johnny Appleseed' is a symbol of everything good associated with the development of the land. To show this evolution, I have tied his drama not just to history and folklore, but to American topography. Most of his trail I have trampled or driven over from Leominster, Mass., to Fort Wayne." -- Amazon.com

Book excerpt: “Pollan shines a light on our own nature as well as on our implication in the natural world.” —The New York Times “A wry, informed pastoral.” —The New Yorker The book that helped make Michael Pollan, the New York Times bestselling author of How to Change Your Mind, Cooked and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, one of the most trusted food experts in America Every schoolchild learns about the mutually beneficial dance of honeybees and flowers: The bee collects nectar and pollen to make honey and, in the process, spreads the flowers’ genes far and wide. In The Botany of Desire, Michael Pollan ingeniously demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a similarly reciprocal relationship. He masterfully links four fundamental human desires—sweetness, beauty, intoxication, and control—with the plants that satisfy them: the apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato. In telling the stories of four familiar species, Pollan illustrates how the plants have evolved to satisfy humankind’s most basic yearnings. And just as we’ve benefited from these plants, we have also done well by them. So who is really domesticating whom?

There will be many old and time-tested figures, sometimes with new faces and new profiles; there will also be a mix of new faces. Thus the hero--like history itself--is constantly in transition, and both the hero and the transition are fundamental to the study of a culture. These essays turn the pantheon of heroes around before our eyes and reveal the many complicated aspects of hero worship.
