The murder of eighteen year old Sera Black has haunted Yohan's family for decades. What really happened the night she died? Melina knows and it's wreaked chaos in her life ever since. Forced to leave her home and the man she loved, she's now faced with horrors from the past and the darkly seductive Yohan Ramsey back in her life. Melina thought things could get no worse. She then discovers a truth, so devastating it would destroy the only man she'd ever loved. Not only was she fearful of how Yohan would accept the news, she was terrified of what he might do once he heard it. Torn apart by anger and regret yet bound by love and desire, Yohan and Melina's lives will collide in another Ramsey explosion.

Book Damaged Angels

Download or read book Damaged Angels written by Bonnie Buxton and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2010-06-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adoptive mother writes the book she wishes had been available -- sympathetic, up-to-date, useful, hopeful and highly readable -- when her family welcomed a little girl not knowing that she struggled with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). When Bonnie and her husband adopted Colette, she was three years old. Big for her age, she had walked alone at eleven months, had excellent verbal skills, a thick mane of curly blonde hair and a sturdy little body. They were thrilled with their gregarious second daughter, a great sister for six-year-old Cleo. But although Colette was bright and delightful, a litany of problems soon presented itself. By the time she hit first grade, her parents were coping with her frequent stealing and lying, and her learning difficulties, which necessitated special education. At the age of fourteen, she discovered drugs and sex; by eighteen, in spite of the love and support provided by her adoptive family, she was a crack addict living on the streets. After seven frustrating years of consulting numerous therapists, a TV item gave Bonnie the answer -- and sent her on a quest for diagnosis and help for her daughter. In general, our society has little compassion for those thousands of individuals whose damaged brains lead them to crime, homelessness and addiction. Few realize that they behave as they do as the result of brain damage caused by their mothers’ drinking during pregnancy. FASD is Canada’s most common, most expensive, yet most preventable mental disability. FASD can be beaten, but as usual, education is key. This book is a tool that could help the 300,000 Canadians currently affected by FASD, and reduce the number of babies born with FASD in the future. -- FASD is a new umbrella term that includes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE), Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND) and Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (pFAS). -- FASD is caused by women drinking alcohol while pregnant. -- So-called “moderate” drinking can do considerable damage to the fetal brain. -- Individuals with FASD may seem normal, but their damaged brains can result in learning disabilities, impulsivity, lying, stealing, tantrums, violence and aggression, inability to predict consequences or learn from experience, lack of conscience, and addictions. -- FASD is the biggest single cause of intellectual impairment in most industrialized countries. -- Research indicates that a high percentage of homeless people, and at least 25% of juvenile and adult offenders suffer from undiagnosed FASD. More than 50% of individuals with FASD will experience school drop-out, trouble with the law, addiction, and unemployment. More than 90% will experience mental health problems. -- The general public, not to mention many professionals, know very little about either FASD or the fact that no amount of alcohol in pregnancy has been established as safe for the fetus.

That dream shatters on an airport runway when her plane goes down, leaving her with only clouded memories of her former life. Devastated by the tragedy, Alice teams with the family to help Johnelle recover. But the love she must have once felt for Dwight remains deeply shadowed, eclipsed by yearning for a new life…with Alice.

Book Poor Man s Provence

Download or read book Poor Man s Provence written by Rheta Grimsley Johnson and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a decade, syndicated columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson has been spending several months a year in Southwest Louisiana, deep in the heart of Cajun Country. Unlike many other writers who have parachuted into the swampy paradise for a few days or weeks, Rheta fell in love with the place, bought a second home and set in planting doomed azaleas and deep roots. She has found an assortment of beautiful people in a homely little town called Henderson, right on the edge of the Atchafalaya Swamp. These days, much is labeled Cajun that is not, and the popularity of the unique culture’s food, songs and dance has been a mixed blessing. The revival of French Louisiana’s traditional music and cuisine often has been cheapened by counterfeits. Confused pilgrims sometimes look to New Orleans for a sampler platter of all things Cajun. Close, but no cigar. Poor Man’s Provence helps define what’s what through lively characters and stories. The book is both personal odyssey and good reporting, travelogue and memoir, funny and frank. This beguiling place is as exotic as it gets without a passport. The author shares what keeps her coming home to French Louisiana. And as NPR commentator Bailey White observes in her foreword, "Both Rheta's readers and the people she writes about will be comfortable, well fed, highly entertained, and happy they came to Poor Man's Provence."

Book A Women s History of the Beatles

Download or read book A Women s History of the Beatles written by Christine Feldman-Barrett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 Open Publication Prize by the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM-ANZ) A Women's History of the Beatles is the first book to offer a detailed presentation of the band's social and cultural impact as understood through the experiences and lives of women. Drawing on a mix of interviews, archival research, textual analysis, and autoethnography, this scholarly work depicts how the Beatles have profoundly shaped and enriched the lives of women, while also reexamining key, influential female figures within the group's history. Organized topically based on key themes important to the Beatles story, each chapter uncovers the varied and multifaceted relationships women have had with the band, whether face-to-face and intimately or parasocially through mediated, popular culture. Set within a socio-historical context that charts changing gender norms since the early 1960s, these narratives consider how the Beatles have affected women's lives across three generations. Providing a fresh perspective of a well-known tale, this is a cultural history that moves far beyond the screams of Beatlemania to offer a more comprehensive understanding of what the now iconic band has meant to women over the course of six decades.

Book excerpt: Song of Spies is a documentary novel. Using main characters based on real people, it is on one level a fascinating story of Israel's foreign intelligence service, the Mossad. The story tracks the breakdown of the Oslo peace process, the rise of the Al Aqsa intifada, and the fight against Islamist terror. On a deeper level, it is also a story of the pivotal events that have shaped Israel's leaders for the 21st century. The story has two protagonists. One is the man called out of semi-retirement to become the Mossad's director. He is also the nephew of one of the last century's most famous philosophers and intellectuals. He is the Shamash. Avi is a former elite commando, now married with a young child. He becomes the Shamash's protege. As the peace process collapses and the new intifada erupts, the Shamash gives Avi a vital new assignment. Ultimately, the assignment and events force Avi to come to terms with his past and recognize what may be his destiny. In the tradition of classic spy novelists, Katz has created a story that takes the reader beyond the headlines, to reveal the soul of an intelligence agency and the people that serve it.
