Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his preface Mr Wilson writes 'I feel that a great many adults ... would do better to spend less time in simply accepting the concepts of others uncritically, and more time in learning how to analyse concepts in general'. Mr Wilson starts by describing the techniques of conceptual analysis. He then gives examples of them in action by composing answers to specific questions and by criticism of quoted passages of argument. Chapter 3 sums up the importance of this kind of mental activity. Chapter 4 presents selections for the reader to analyse, followed by questions of university entrance/scholarship type. This is a book to be worked through, in a sense a text-book.

Download or read book The Plain Guide to Grief written by John Wilson, PhD and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In plain language, this book tells you how to manage your grief following a life changing loss. It tells you what to expect in the coming weeks, months and years. Your grief is unique. Nobody has ever grieved like you are doing, so this is a guide to support you in your journey, not a method for you to follow. If you are reading this because you are grieving a loss, then most likely a person close to you has died. However, this book can help with other difficult losses. Loss of a job, of health, of a friendship or an intimate relationship, are just some of the losses that we grieve. 'Loved one' can refer to a pet too.The plain and simple language of the book is important when your loss is new. Grief makes it hard to concentrate, so this book uses simple words, short sentences and not too many words on a page. The author, Dr John Wilson, has supported hundreds of grieving people over the past twenty years, and continues to research how people grieve. This book is based on the real experience of grieving people whose stories have been made anonymous. Dr Wilson is author of 'Supporting People through Loss and Grief: An introduction for Counsellors and Other Caring Practitioners.' Published in 2013, it is often used to train bereavement counsellors and volunteers in bereavement support. This edition includes a chapter on bereavement from and during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Download or read book The Star Creek Papers written by Horace Mann Bond and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Star Creek Papers is the never-before-published account of the complex realities of race relations in the rural South in the 1930s. When Horace and Julia Bond moved to Louisiana in 1934, they entered a world where the legacy of slavery was miscegenation, lingering paternalism, and deadly racism. The Bonds were a young, well-educated and idealistic African American couple working for the Rosenwald Fund, a trust established by a northern philanthropist to build schools in rural areas. They were part of the "Explorer Project" sent to investigate the progress of the school in the Star Creek district of Washington Parish. Their report, which decried the teachers' lack of experience, the poor quality of the coursework, and the students' chronic absenteeism, was based on their private journal, "The Star Creek Diary," a shrewdly observed, sharply etched, and affectionate portrait of a rural black community. Horace Bond was moved to write a second document, "Forty Acres and a Mule," a history of a black farming family, after Jerome Wilson was lynched in 1935. The Wilsons were thrifty landowners whom Bond knew and respected; he intended to turn their story into a book, but the chronicle remained unfinished at his death. These important primary documents were rediscovered by civil rights scholar Adam Fairclough, who edited them with Julia Bond's support.

Book Reality Hunger

Download or read book Reality Hunger written by David Shields and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-02-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark book, “brilliant, thoughtful” (The Atlantic) and “raw and gorgeous” (LA Times), that fast-forwards the discussion of the central artistic issues of our time, from the bestselling author of The Thing About Life Is That One Day You'll Be Dead. Who owns ideas? How clear is the distinction between fiction and nonfiction? Has the velocity of digital culture rendered traditional modes obsolete? Exploring these and related questions, Shields orchestrates a chorus of voices, past and present, to reframe debates about the veracity of memoir and the relevance of the novel. He argues that our culture is obsessed with “reality,” precisely because we experience hardly any, and urgently calls for new forms that embody and convey the fractured nature of contemporary experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wilson was, and remains, one of the most mysterious and inexplicable human beings of the 20th and 21st centuries. His name first became known to the American public during the Great Airship Scare of 1896-7. From that moment on, for reasons that still defy logic, he became a subject of endless fascination and deep suspicion to US intelligence agencies, which had desperately tried, and failed, to track him down. THE WILSON PAPERS tell the story of a man who was born in the American Midwest of the 19th century, took part in the rise and fall of the Third Reich in Nazi Germany, continued into the Space Age of the 20th century, and finally entered the late 21st century to unveil a future of unparalleled scientific achievements and unspeakable horrors. A future terrifying beyond normal human imagining. THE WILSON PAPERS, finally declassified, tell this extraordinary, truly shocking, and almost unbelievable story. Read them and tremble.
