Book John Wesley and the American Frontier

Download or read book John Wesley and the American Frontier written by John Beeson and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to understand John Wesley's theology, which when put into practice, gave birth to a great evangelical revival in the English-speaking world of the eighteenth century. On the American Frontier in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century, Wesley's theology underwent some significant changes. These changes were in key areas of Wesley's theology: the doctrines of Grace, Christian perfection, and his theology of worship and sacraments. There have always been those who seek church renewal through a return of the 'ole time religion' (the religion of the frontier). This book suggests that we in the twenty-first century need to go back further than the American frontier in our search for church renewal, back to Wesley's theology, unfiltered through the frontier. Dr. Beeson is retired after forty-four years as a United Methodist pastor and District Superintendent in the Western New York Conference. In retirement he has had time to write this book, which has been in the back of his mind for years. He has been a Chaplin in the Army Reserve with the final rank of captain, executive secretary of the Genesee County Council of Churches, mayor of the village of Barker, N.Y. and theology professor in Burundi, Africa. He has written two other books: They Gathered at the Cross 1967 and Deep Pools 1978; a study guide for laity, Theology 101 and a course of study for pastors in Burundi. Dr. Beeson and his wife, Eva, have three grown children and several grandchildren all of whom they are very proud.

Book Wesley and Men who Followed

Download or read book Wesley and Men who Followed written by Iain Hamish Murray and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley - Oxford don and itinerant preacher, intellectual and evangelist, author and man of action, upholder of the Church of England yet founder of another world-wide denomination, disagreeing with George Whitefield, yet preaching his funeral sermon - truly a many-sided man. It is no wonder that he has had many biographers. Most books on Wesley have concentrated on his leading role in the Evangelical Revival. Wesley and Men Who Followed is more concerned with the spiritual explanation of a movement which, far from dwindling at his death, increased in momentum, breadth and transforming power. Drawing from original and often little-known Methodist sources, Iain Murray's thrilling study leads to conclusions that are of great relevance for the contemporary church. 'Was John Wesley deceived? Have our hymn-writers been deceived in their immortal songs? Was Saul of Tarsus deceived? Have we all been deceived?' So wrote one unhappy modern Methodist. The evidence Iain Murray provides demonstrates that this was not the case. The result is that Wesley and Men Who Followed points to the key to the recovery of authentic Christianity today.

  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book John Wesley written by Ralph Waller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-05-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May 2003 is the 300th anniversary of the birth of John Wesley. This is a beautifully written biography intended for a general audience. While not at all hagiographical, the book leads one to admire Wesley immensely. He traveled throughout the British Isles more than anyone in history. Reviled early on during his plein air evangelical crusades, he became deeply loved in old age by all sectors of the population. While the book has a slightly British cast to it (which is unavoidable given the extent of Wesley's travels throughout Britain), it gives adequate coverage to his period in the American colonies.

Book Recapturing the Wesleys Vision

Download or read book Recapturing the Wesleys Vision written by Paul Wesley Chilcote and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholar and teacher Paul Wesley Chilcote provides a full and clear introduction to the dynamic faith of John and Charles Wesley. The vital theology of John is skillfully gleaned from his voluminous writings. The corresponding faith of Charles is culled from his enduring hymns. For students and general readers this book illuminates the vital balance the Wesleys found in Christian teaching that overcomes the often mutually exclusive options presented in other theological traditions. Chilcote shows that such a synthetic faith is not boring or irrelevant but transforming and life-giving, bringing together faith and works, Word and Spirit, the personal and the social, the head and the heart, mission and service.

Book Charles Wesley in America

Download or read book Charles Wesley in America written by S. T. Kimbrough and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1736, a century into Britain's expansion in North America, Charles Wesley arrived, and departed, the American colonies. His time in Georgia, where he was a missionary of the Church of England, Colonel Oglethorpe's personal aide, and secretary of Indian Affairs, was filled with discord and difficulty. Despite being treated warmly by the Anglican clergy of Boston, he struggled as a newly ordained Anglican priest, and was enveloped by scandal when two women accused him and Oglethorpe of moral impropriety. Charles Wesley in America is the first comprehensive treatment of this period in Wesley's ministry. Kimbrough provides the first explanation of Wesley's silence following the Oglethorpe affair, and also examines his negative attitudes towards the Revolutionary War and nascent opposition to slavery. Drawing on primary sources such as Wesley's poetry and a rare letter exchange between two former slaves whom Wesley befriended in Bristol, Kimbrough gives fresh insight into this formative period and the impact it had on Wesley's later career.
